Tyson stared blankly at the TV, his mouth open slightly. Obviously he had watched the show, he just assumed she had too. “Uh, of course not…why would I watch something without you? I would never. That’s like cheating and this is probably the most meaningful and steady relationship that I’ve ever had. I can’t believe you’d think that.”

“Tyson Hart, you liar!” Phaenna exclaimed, laughing. “You so totally watched it without me! I can see it all over your face--this is, like, the ultimate betrayal. I might not ever be able to forgive you for this.” She was still grinning, but she crossed her arms over her chest. “I can’t believe you did this to me.”

“Thank you. That was a hard lesson to learn at first, but it was a good one. My mom still hasn’t really come to terms with it, but that’s how some parents are, I guess.” Grinning, he ran a hand through his hair. “She does, in fact. Katie Wood. she’s a real person, I swear.”

Phae’s mouth dropped open slightly when he mentioned his girlfriend’s name. “No way! You’re Katie’s boyfriend? Oh my god, that makes so much sense--no wonder you’re all dreamy-eyed over your girlfriend. Katie’s like, the best customer that comes through here. I wait on her all the time! I’ve probably seen you with her, then, I guess I just never noticed. I can get a little spacey on faces when I’m working.”

“Pft, I know girl. It’s okay, it happens to the best of them.” He laughed slightly at his own joke, knowing full well that it wasn’t even close to the reality of his romantic situations. But what was he expecting if all he ever did on prime dating nights was binge what TV shows and stuff his face with food? “Wait!” Tyson exclaimed. “What about Rick and Morty? Have you watched that yet? Because there’s no way we can be nerds if we haven’t watched that yet. It’s like the coolest nerd show yet.”

“I guess I’ll just get in line with the rest, then,” she replied, laughing along with him. Phae’s love life wasn’t much better than his--in fact, Tyson was one of the only steady men in her life right now, even though it wasn’t romantic. There were only a few others that she even saw on a regular basis. “Well, I guess I’m a terrible nerd, because I haven’t seen it yet. Have you watched it? Careful how you answer, because if you watched it without me you might just break my heart.”

“That’s good,” he nodded at her. The restaurant she worked at was one of the few places he had gotten to know and frequented because the food over there was so good, but either way, he figured she was happy to be off work. “How was it? Too many clients?” His fingers fiddled over the guitar strings for a few more seconds before he stopped for good, putting his instrument aside. “Yeah… hey, I know you just got off work, but would you maybe like to get a drink? I need to clear off my mind a little bit, and I’d really enjoy the company,” he shrugged one shoulder, pursing his lips at he looked at Phaenna tentatively.

“It wasn’t so bad, actually,” she answered, shrugging her shoulders. Phaenna liked her job, kind of--waitressing wasn’t awful and her boss was pretty cool. “I mean, my first customer of the day was kind of a sleaze, but that’s nothing I’m not used to. Everybody else was pretty cool.” At his suggestion that they go get drinks, her face lit up and she smiled. “Well, since I’m not busy and I’m flush with tip money, a drink sounds perfect,” Phae agreed. “Besides, I can’t let you drink alone, now, can I? That’d just be sad, and I won’t allow it.”

That’s all I’m sayin, jeez.” Tyson clicked through the titles, looking for the show. “It takes a nerd to know one, doesn’t it?”

“I’ll do my best, but you’re just so drop-dead sexy, Ty, I don’t know how I’ll control myself,” she said, her tone light and teasing. “And I guess I can do that, probably. It might not be too big of a hassle.” Phae watched him clicking through the show titles, her fingers idly peeling at the label on her beer bottle. “Isn’t that why we’re both here on your couch binge-watching Netflix? Because we’re both nerds?”

“You know, it was one of the few extra-curriculars I insisted that I take despite my mom’s disapproval.” She had said it was a waste of time for him to do it, but he liked it so it didn’t matter to him what she said. He shook his head ruefully, tapping his phone on the table. “I’ll be sure to drag her along with me everywhere I go from now on, just so I can prove to to you that she’s real.”

“Well, it’s good that you did--you’re a natural. Sometimes you just have to do what you think is best, even if your parents don’t agree, right? It would have been a waste for you not to do it.” Phaenna laughed again at their ongoing joke. “Does this elusive girlfriend of yours have a name?”

ben had his feet propped up on one of the empty seats that sat around his table as he half assed inspected the menu. rolling a smoke between his fingers, he waited for a prospective business offer anxiously. his first official executive decision was in the works so he was effectively more moody than ever. “ yeah, what took you so long? ” he asked, not giving her a chance to answer. “ i need a glass of water with ice and you got any ashtrays around here? ” he asked, gesturing to the cigarette in his grasp and raising his brow, expecting a quick and pleasing reply.

As soon as she realized exactly who was sitting in her section, Phae set her jaw and braced herself. Sometimes, Ben could be funny and even tolerable, but sometimes he could be an asshole. It looked like the latter was on the menu tonight. Phaenna crossed her arms. “You can’t smoke in here,” she informed him, her tone sharp. “So no, we don’t have any ashtrays, but you do have to put that out. Also, I didn’t come over earlier because it at least looked like you were reading the menu.”

ronin sat fiddling with a napkin in his hand as he looked around the place he had become so accustomed to visiting. it wasn’t till a chirpy and polite voice spoke up behind him that caught his attention. looking over his shoulder, he smiled. he took his one arm and draped it over the back of his chair. “ are you on the menu, cause i’d like to take you out. ” he quipped. he was overly positive some creepy old perv or more had said the exact same pick up line seventeen times today. hopefully, it had the opposite effect and made her genuinely smile. “ i’m kidding. i’ve come to walk you home. ”

Her face visibly brightened when Ronin looked over his shoulder, and she burst out laughing at the pick up line that was used on her far too often for her tastes. Phae reached out and shoved his shoulder playfully. “You know some sleaze asked me that just this morning? I mean, seriously--this is a restaurant. It’s not like I’m a shot girl or something.” She shook her head and dropped into the chair next to him, untying her apron and putting it up on the table. “Aw, you’re too sweet to me, Ronin--are you sure you don’t want something to eat first? You’re my last table of the night.”

“What can I say? I know what girls want.” He offered the other a cheesy smile before filling his mouth with potato salad. “Uh, I don’t know. Bugles. Pringles. Popcorn. Chips. Anything. And I know right?! Who does that? Must be nice to have that much money that you don’t care if you leave the food behind. Whatever though. More for us. Feel free to get yourself something and definitely feel free to heat me up something too. Just saying.” He shrugged his shoulders before reaching for the remote and turning the tv on. “Yeah, I guess we’ll have to see, nerd.”

Phae laughed. “Careful, Ty, you might make me swoon,” she teased, taking another bite of the potato salad. “Literally all of the snack foods, got it. If it comes in a shiny bag and there’s some kind of buy one get one sale, I’ll get it. It’s not like we’re these fancy rich people who can throw a party and just leave food behind. Especially good food. Like, who wouldn’t want to eat these leftovers?” She shook her head, still giggling. Tyson always kept her laughing. “Oh, now you want me to serve you? I see how it is. Maybe I’ll just heat myself up a burger and you can watch me eat it, how does that sound?” She settled into the couch and took another drink of her beer as he turned the television on. “Who are you calling a nerd? You’re clearly the nerd here.”

“Thank you, I’m quite partial to chicken.” She recognized him before he could say the same about her and it took a moment for Drew to place her. Everyone looked so different when they weren’t in a mask and formal clothes. “Oh, that’s right. You’re the one who cut in on my best partner of the night.” He laughed as well, shaking his head in mock disappointment. “You know, I’d volunteer to show you pictures but that sounds exactly like what someone who had made up his girlfriend would say, doesn’t it? Would you believe me if I said she had a girls’ night out with her other best friend - the one who isn’t me.”

“What can I say? You’re a great dancer--I couldn’t pass up that opportunity.” Phae giggled. “You know, that does sound exactly like something someone with a made up girlfriend would say. Girlfriend mysteriously isn’t around at the dance and now has a girls’ night out? Highly suspicious, but I guess I’ll let it slide this time. Next time I see you, though, you’d better have this girl with you or I’ll be totally convinced she’s fake.”

“Miller it is.” He grabbed two Miller lights from the fridge and a tray of potato salad from the fridge before walking over to the couch. “I mean, you can just get snacks in general and leave them here. I’ll keep them reserved for our tv time. As for tonight, we’ve got a BBQ feast. Somebody had a party at the bar and gave us the leftovers. There’s a few burgers, some pulled pork, beans, fried chicken, and mashed potatoes in the fridge. I only had room to carry the potato salad.” Pulling the two spoons he had hidden in his pocket and hold it out to her, Tyson rolled his eyes at her. “Puh-lease. I’m going to have to explain it to you.”

“A man after my own heart,” she joked as she took the beer from him, watching Tyson settle in on the couch next to her. “I’ll totally stock us up, then! Any special requests?” Phaenna took one of the two spoons and dug into the tray of potato salad, taking a bite. “You weren’t kidding when you said feast! This is awesome, Tyson--what kind of weirdo doesn’t take home leftovers from their own party? You know what, I actually don’t care. More for us.” Phae giggled and nudged him with her foot. “Hey! We’ll just have to see about that.”

“Whattya want to drink,” he asked as he scanned the fridge for snacks. “And you don’t have to explain anything to me, you goof. I’m up to date but I wanna make sure it’s fresh in my mind.”

She glanced over at him from her spot on the couch, drawing her knees up toward her chest. “Whatever you’re drinking is fine,” she said with a smile. “Are you low on anything? I can make a run before I come next time if we need to stock up.” Phae tried not to eat all of Tyson’s food when she came over, or she at least tried to help replace what she did eat and drink. “Yeah, yeah, whatever you say. I guess I could use a refresher, too, in case I do have to explain anything to you.”

“I swear the entire city showed up. I think most people love a good chance to dress up, and the mystery of being behind a mask. You can sort of be anyone you want when you have a mask on, as long as you’re not around someone that knows you well enough even with it.” Katie had loved dancing the night away with Andrew and getting ready for the event with Minnie.

“Oh, I’m pretty sure the actual entire city was there,” she agreed, giggling. “It was, like, just this sea of people in masks, which was kind of cool. I mean, not that the masks were super effective, but it was enough to give that air of mystery. If you didn’t know someone well, though, you’re right--it works really well.” Phaenna wished that she’d done more at the event, but she’d danced with a few people and had a good time.
