if you’re referring to what he said to his coming out video - he did not say that - specifically or implied. If you have that exact quote, I’d love to see/hear it.
I’d argue he has expressed (i’d argue on more than one occasion) even before coming out that he understands that fanfic/fanart are a creative expression. He even took people’s (calm, non-invasive) curiosity and passion for their relationship as a compliment - despite wanting to still be private.
What Dan did say he was uncomfortable with was people invading and digging around his personal private life - which, I’d say, fanfic/fanart doesn’t do. Fanfic/fanart are (most likely, at least in my case as a phanartist myself) based on what observations of what dnp have already shared with us and our further expression from that. By this I mean: dnp are cute, we wanna add to the cute, so we make cute stuff but im sure there are other aspects to it too, that’s just the base of it.
That being said, I’d understand what you’re saying if it was sexual and forced in D&P’s face, it would be a different story ...but honestly the one I reblogged is ...harmless.
I’d also like to add that Dan made it very clear that Phil is a big part of his life, a big part of him accepting who he is, and regardless of what they want to define their relationship as now privately, it’s clear and specifically said by Dan that they have been romantically involved and from one’s own observation you can tell they are still very close (10 years later) and again, experienced with their audiences behaviour and forms of expression...so I have to defend that a cute drawing of them cuddling each other with a dog, that can still be interpreted as platonic, isn’t bad to them.
Honestly though... if Dan was uncomfortable with phanart... he would have used the exact words you did in his 45 min video where he was very open about thoughts and feelings very personal to him. I doubt he would’ve filtered himself over something so big in his audience in a video discussing something already very big to him.
