it's crazy to me that in titan's curse percy goes on an entire journey regarding how he processes his romantic feelings for annabeth just for fandom to almost completely pretend that just, like, didn't happen. like in this book percy:

begins the book by feeling newly insecure and nervous around annabeth, noticing that she looks older, being frustrated that she's taller now, commenting on ways she's starting to act more mature, expressing discomfort and slight jealousy that she is spending more time with thalia, and regretting that he hasn't been able to see her as often as he would've liked even though she's right in brooklyn, is hyper-aware of how it looks/feels romantic when they're dancing

finds out that annabeth was thinking of joining the hunters from grover and admits that he would like to say he took the news well but he didn't, although i don't think he's ready to admit why just yet

is interrogated by aphrodite regarding his romantic feelings for annabeth, clearly is not ready to talk about them yet but also doesn't deny it, and then is openly TOLD by the goddess of love that she thinks they're a cute couple and she has a lot planned for them

nearly has a panic attack on olympus thinking she's going to join the hunters and actually does tell her not to even tho he doesn't like fully get the reasoning out.

but decides that he does want to talk to annabeth anyway, is actively looking for her, tells us there's 'a lot i'd wanted to say to annabeth'

gets interrupted by athena, threatened by her, told she does not approve of his friendship with annabeth and that she'll be watching him. he then tells us he feels like she punched him in the gut and took all his confidence away.

so he doesn't talk to annabeth. but he asks her for a slow dance and describes the music as 'a little sad but a little hopeful too'

so in this book percy: comes to terms with the fact that he has romantic feelings for annabeth and that's why he doesn't want her to join the hunt, literally begins the process of telling her that, gets threatened by athena and chickens out, but still makes the first unambiguously romantic gesture between them by asking annabeth for a slow dance. he was not clueless!

Revoking Chaco Canyon Protections Would Risk A Thousand Years of History

Trump’s BLM is cutting the protection boundaries of Bears Ears National Monument and Chaco Canyon National Historic Park (a UNESCO World Heritage site) to open it up to natural gas and oil drilling. That's a 10 mile protective buffer that will be obliterated if this proposal passes. Additionally, the Bears Ears Commission is being cut, erasing Indigenous voices, their contributions, and the work that tribes have put into protecting the Bears Ears National Monument. It should go without saying that this will be disastrous for these cultural sites, the tribes, and for the environment. 

‘Official’ information regarding this proposal is open to the public online on the Federal Register website. This is actually something that you can access for every proposal that affects public lands, and there are comment periods so that the public can express their opinions. Just curious but where does the star on cheek motif come from in Ancient Greece? It’s beautiful but I don’t know what it’s called so I can’t google it effectively and ‘star on cheek ancient Greece’ did not net me much. If you have any resources on this I would love to read them!

I'm not sure if there's an actual term for it, but the main (and perhaps only) point of reference that everyone seems to use is this painted plaster head of a woman from Mycenae c. 12th century BCE (National Archaeological Museum Athens inv. 4575). it's a unique and pretty unusual object for the period, but apparently there are a couple of other (less well-preserved or less impressive) examples of women's faces depicted with these red suns/stars/rosettes on their cheeks and chins in Mycenaean art. there's some thought that it might be a representation of some sort of makeup worn by real women in late Bronze Age Mycenae, potentially royalty and/or priestesses in official ritual contexts. alternatively it could be an artistic marker of divinity or non-human status with absolutely no relation to women's appearances in real life, since this head may have belonged to a statue of a goddess or a sphinx. we do have a decent number of Mycenaean wall painting fragments depicting female figures, and I don't believe any of them have these markings on their faces-- the trend of depicting mythic or historical Bronze Age Greek women like this really does seem to all come back to this one object.
