This week Phispers covers Xofluza, a drug approved in Japan that kills the influenza virus in 24 hours. It is poised to give Roche's Tamiflu a run for its money. In April last year, German drugmaker Fresenius Kabi had agreed to acquire Akorn, a manufacturer and marketer of prescription and over-the-counter pharmaceutical products based in the US, for approximately US$ 4.3 billion. The transaction was expected to close in early 2018.

Experts predict that 2018 will be a bumper year for M&As. The year began with more than enough signs that validate this prediction. During January, we saw biotech M&As worth US$ 26.3 billion. 2017 was a landmark year for the pharmaceutical industries in the US and Europe, with a sharp increase in the number of new molecular entities (NMEs) being approved in both the geographies. The US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) approved 46 NMEs in 2017, a strong bounce back from only 22 NMEs approved in 2016.
The first month of 2018 ended with a bang, with several big ticket M&A deals and bids. While Sanofi bought Bioverativ for US$ 11.6 billion, Juno Therapeutics announced it was getting acquired by Celgene in a deal worth US$ 9 billion. On November 5, 2015, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning letter to Indian drug major Dr Reddy's Laboratories (DRL) as inspections at its active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) and finished pharmaceutical manufacturing operations revealed problems ranging from data-integrity violations to lapses in product quality control.
Data integrity continued to be a hot topic in the pharmaceutical industry through 2017. According to a recent analysis by GMP (good manufacturing practices) intelligence expert, Barbara Unger, approximately 65 percent of all US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) warning letters issued in FY2017 (October 1, 2016 until September 30, 2017) included a data integrity component. However, in the previous year, this number was even higher — at 79 percent — implying there has been a decline in non-compliance incidents pertaining to data integrity in 2017.

While the former received two setbacks from its experimental drugs, Impact got bought over by Celgene for its rare blood cancer drug - fedratinib.
