as much as I hate bryke cancelling a project to focus on another, I'm kinda relieved that zuko movie was scrapped because it bothers me how they were gonna use smoke and shadow as inspiration, but not as source. so are they gonna start pretending that those comics they co-wrote and greenlit don't exist? since when are they backtracking this much on things they decided to make public?
Honestly, it doesn't surprise me, because the problem with doing a Zuko movie is that there are things that would need to be addressed that had already been explored in the comics, and as I said before, they are not going to make a movie that builds on things only mentioned in the comics, so they would either have to ignore the comics, or adapt them.
But then, if you choose to adapt, you run into the issue of adapting a story that has already been told and widely regarded as sub-par.
To me, this is also why the Aang movie was very hands off with anything going on in the Fire Nation.
Now, an adaptation of a bad source material that improves upon its source is not a bad idea, but Smoke and Shadow is not the one I would pick. The obvious place to start, if you are going to ignore the comics, is Ursa, since the question of where she is was so blatantly teased in the series finale.
I also think there could have been an opportunity to explore some of the things that the comics should have focused on. Like how Zuko got Druk.
But probably just as well to leave those things to fanfic.
