Was able to grab this candid during some down time at Japan Day at Central park in NY this past weekend! Like I always say, find a spot, find a shot. Just slowly waited for her to turn in my direction and.. clicko!
For me, the idea is very simple in photography. “Find a spot...find a shot”. Get a shot that no one else has. So..being an observant person (not to be confused with nosy) is key to grabbing a shot that no one else has. Now, that, by the way, does not mean its going to be a great photo. Thats up to the photographer, and of course, the subject. In the case of Lizzy Hale of Halestorm I got into a position that I knew no one was. Made sure my settings were ready and just waited for her to back off the mic ever so subtle and CLICKO!
Nothing like basic flash photography...Although I gave some thought to it on my drive over, I only had a few minutes to shoot some quick portraits of the Irish rock band Dissension Rising as the sun was setting.. No, they didnt come all the way from Ireland to work with yours truly. This was taken in the parking lot of Blackthorn 51 in Queens NY (not a lot of pretty locations in that area I assure you) Its a club they were gearing to play on Sat night. Dropped a 580ex flash on a tripod directly behind me and rose it about 12 feet in the air. Loaded a 430ex flash on board to catch the lead singer and clicko! edits in Adobe Lightroom.
The reason I most like this shot is not only because its my daughter, she a big part...but its actually a candid. I had my canon s110 ready to go as my daughter was looking down at her phone (shes 15, what else would she be doing) I got in position, had the camera already in my black and white preset mode and simply called her name. Loaded the image into Adobe Lightroom, added my custom preset for black and white canon s110 images and... well..done!
Couple of things I learned on this photo shoot with viking metal band Last Legion up in blustery Bear Mountain NY yesterday afternoon. 1. have an assistant. 2. never pick up sharp objects that you assume are fake props. I cut myself and bled like a stuck pig right after I took this shot. okay... It was a slight war wound, but never the less, I was one handed the rest of the way. Shot this with my canon 5D with an on board 430ex flash and a 580ex flash on a tripod off to the right which was just hitting the building on the right which I triggered with pocket wizards.
Sometimes a shot just begs you to make it black and white. Like this one… It practically shook me and said, hey man… try me… Shot is of Jesyka Loren of SYKA performing at Highline Ballroom in NYC last night! I shot this on my 7D mark2 instead of my 5D cause I was carrying a fisheye.

Its kinda weird the way things play out. I had recently (try like three weeks ago) done a slide show of some of portrait work using the Queensryche song, Silent Lucidity. Not sure if this is pure coincidence, or just life chasing you down and turning you in the direction it wants you in, but my friend’s band opened up for Geoff Tate, the former lead singer of, yes... you guessed it Queensryche last evening.
So here it is, another chance. Wide awake you face the day... Your dream is over or has it just begun?

Oddly enough, this image wasnt even suppose to be captured. I was pulling my camera out of my bag to grab a shot of a break-dancer who was doing flips just off to my right. But as I looked through, I saw this image appear and grabbed it. I never did get the break-dancer as the train pulled up only two seconds later.
Having shot Chaka Khan before (last time was at Hammerstein, the mother of all coincidences) this time we were on the side of the stage at The Kings Theatre in Brooklyn. These side shoots are sometime a chore, as it takes lots of patience to wait for an artist to turn in your direction. Dont worry, stand tall, keep your settings and wait...They will!
I never realized how wicked this was. Looking at this guy do his best Hulk Hogan while crowd surfing at the Slayer show in 2013 at the Theater @ Madison Square Garden still cracks me up.
80% of photography is being in the right position, the other 20% of what happens is luck. Okay... maybe its the other way around but at any rate, I was in the right spot and I was lucky a year ago today at Hammerstein Ballroom during the Pierce The Veil show to grab this amazing capture. Take what the good lord gives you! Dont ask questions. www.markdoylephoto.com
