the best thing about rulette 2 is that i do think it adds substantial mechanical improvements to the game design of the first iteration — paul and sam as ‘players’ intended to follow and be called out on rules, interesting new rules/prompts/modifiers, the golden rule concept, etc. — but all of that slowly but surely becomes overshadowed by josh ruben landing by chance on all of the specific rules that transform him into a baby-themed tongue-heavy gyrating monster

Duuuude lui talking about how it doesn’t matter that the dead people being alive again would feel real and that if they’ve died they should remain that way, and saying those words to WILLIAM WISP OF ALL PEOPLE!! Is making me go crazy holyyyy

William wisp remembering what he said and having that haunt him as he pretends to be alive. William maybe leaving deadwood BECAUSE he heard that and knowing they wouldn’t want him there anymore becuase he’s not the same.

the gap in maturity between wiwi upp and wiwi early s1 pd is eating me. in upp we see him in his element surrounded by his people, and even with all the horrific shit he faces and as a regular human boy hes never half as uncertain and self-hating as he is in pd. he was taken from his home, split up from his friends (the only people he says "get" him), and placed under prying eyes and a rigid daily routine, and he fucking crumpled. hes a natural leader; we see him take charge in scary situations and norah and isaac look to him by default. but even when dakota and vyncent are ready to obey him as directed by tide, he hesitates. his trust in himself has plummeted. furthermore, in deadwood, he knows people find him weird but hes able to be okay with that as long as he has his friends. but at the start of pd, hes terrified of summers rejection and ping-pongs between going along with dakotas bullying and hiding from both him and jimmy. hes supposed to be the leader, but outside of missions he knows if he stands up to dakota, hell really be alone. prime force wrung the life out of this boy and then dropped two other traumatized teenagers in his arms and put him in a stand-in absent fathers general vicinity for support (when tide isnt busy with his own shit).

alternatively, we see upp wiwi aware the town depends on him having recruited the only other people at his school who are outcast enough to hear him out (isaac, the delinquent; norah, whom everyone likes but nobody knows and who cant even tell her parents she wants to switch from flute to guitar; and lui, whose deal we dont know) sacrificing his childhood because the fact that he can keep people safe means its his responsibility to do so. he couldnt turn to the adults in his life when he was afraid, so he became the adult before he was ready and it took a toll. he learned to shove down his fear and doubts when someone had to make a decision or when one of his friends was in danger (which he does with isaac in e1 and norah in e3) and that fear comes seeping out all the rest of the time and thats why he cant relax for the life of him. then at the beginning of pd hes away from deadwood and everyones telling him he can trust the older heroes and then they go on one little mission and suddenly everyone is keeping secrets from them. there are just as many dark things moving about in the shadows and hes still on his own (plus a bully, an attempted murderer, and their guardian who repeatedly shows disregard for their needs and autonomy, punishing them for watching a movie with a 5:30 wakeup with emergency sirens) to stop them. hes coaxed to let down his walls and then the world outside them is exactly what he was afraid it was, and even in prime force hes talked down to and treated like a freak.

or maybe at the start of pd we see a wiwi who was just starting to believe he could handle things, when he lost everything. something he doesnt completely understand changed him fundamentally-- his body works differently, and no one can explain why, or what he even is now. maybe other things have changed. plus, everyone he used to rely on for support is gone. he isnt given the choice to not be ready to be a hero, because the world needs him and thats more important than however he may feel. get up william. sit down william. now get up again. do a little dance. thats a stupid dance. you did a really stupid dance and everyones pointing and laughing at you. what are you just standing there for? i didnt say you could stop.

truly some people have no genre savviness whatsoever. A girl came back from the dead the other day and fresh out of the grave she laughed and laughed and lay down on the grass nearby to watch the sky, dirt still under her nails. I asked her if she’s sad about anything and she asked me why she should be. I asked her if she’s perhaps worried she’s a shadow of who she used to be and she said that if she is a shadow she is a joyous one, and anyway whoever she was she is her, now, and that’s enough. I inquired about revenge, about unfinished business, about what had filled her with the incessant need to claw her way out from beneath but she just said she’s here to live. I told her about ghosts, about zombies, tried to explain to her how her options lie between horror and tragedy but she just said if those are the stories meant for her then she’ll make another one. I said “isn’t it terribly lonely how in your triumph over death nobody was here to greet you?” and she just looked at me funny and said “what do you mean? The whole world was here, waiting”. Some people, I tell you.
