--A memory that your character cherishes--
Basil smiles. It’s the first genuine smile you’ve seen on their face since you left Troyke, and it is radiant. And sad. Tears well up in their eyes as they sit next to you.
“My mom? Oh, she was wonderful. One time - oh, boy,” They wipe at the tears crawling down their cheeks and laugh quietly. “She took me to a ruin on the outskirts of the Labyrinth Wood, it was so beautiful. So ancient. The remaining wall that stood was completely covered in Fairy Wings, are you familiar?”
You shake your head slightly and Basil nods, begins moving their hands in the intricate way that signals their casting of Druidcraft and before you can blink you’re showered in falling flower petals, pink and red, delicate, beautiful.
“They’re a climbing flower, kind of shaped like.. Well, fairy wings.”
You raise your hand to catch a petal, but each one passes harmlessly through your skin and disappears.
“The ruins had almost been entirely reclaimed by the forest, but I could see something on that remaining wall. When I pointed it out, mom... She acted surprised. Like she hadn’t noticed it. But she had to have, now that I think about it, she must have been pretending for my sake. She was so wonderful, like that.”
They pause to scrub at their face once more, to take a few calming breaths.
“We slowly pulled the vines back and found bits of an etching, it must have been a mural once, you could see slight discolorations that may have been paint..” Their brows furrow a bit.
“You couldn’t really see the details anymore, though. We sat there for hours, sketching out what we could see and trying to fill in the rest. The bits you could see were of two people, they seemed to be dancing. This,” they reach around to their pack and pull out their journal, something you never see them without. They open it to the first page and tilt it so you can see a few crude sketches of people in motion. “This was my work. It’s not the best, but mom said she really loved it.”
Basil goes quiet and you notice their shoulders have started to shake and the tears come heavier. You slip an arm around them and give a gentle squeeze, you want to comfort them but you know nothing will really dampen the pain of losing a parent, so you do the best you can, letting them cry on your shoulder.
sorry I’ve been gone for so long
life and mental health and what-not

“Am I–?”
The question caught her off-guard and Yoluta had to pause. She had gotten injured during the initial scuffle before she could pull off her plan but she would hate to worry her new friend. Lying, however, was not something she liked to do, either. Her mouth twitched in a frown as she considered what to do.
“A little but it’s not so bad, just a small cut and scrape. I could take care of it but not on the move like this. I would like to put a little more space between us and them,” she said with a smile. “If that sounds alright to you?”
She gladly shook Basil’s hand.
“I’m Yoluta.”
They looked a bit worried during the pause, but smiled brightly and nodded at her anyway. After the quick introduction, they turned back to the road, ready to keep putting distance between them and the danger.
“Where I’m from, I never get lost. They say it’s the Goddess’ magic protecting us. But out here?” They waved a hand at the surroundings “Out here.. boy I barely know which direction is up!”
They laughed quietly, hoping to lighten the spirits a bit.

Yoluta sighed in relief.
She believed that people were good, overall, even when there was plenty of evidence to the contrary. It seemed today her beliefs about the world were well rewarded and her gamble had paid off. She didn’t know what she would have done otherwise. No use in thinking about that now; the men were looking unsure of themselves and she didn’t want to give them a chance to regain their composure.
“Of course,” she said with a smile, taking the stranger’s arm. Trusting someone unknown like this was a risk but at least safer. Yoluta steered them in the direction she had been heading and resisted the temptation to look back. When she believed they were out of earshot, she added, “I do hope they’re not following us.”
Basil followed her lead easily, though they did stop momentarily to pluck a white flower, which found it’s way into the woman’s hair while they walked. They smiled and continued on their way, giving her arm a bit of a gentle, reassuring squeeze. When the silence was broken for the second time, they wrinkled up their nose and turned their head to look behind them just slightly.
“I don’t see anyone,” they mumbled, then cleared their throat and spoke a little louder, “Are you hurt?" Big green eyes turned back to the woman as they adjusted their glasses, first, and then their silly little flower crown. “My name is Basil, by the way.”
They briefly considered bowing to the woman, but instead offered up a hand for a shake.
I hope in 2020 you get to write that thing you’ve been wanting to write, and you write it amazingly.

[ rest ] cat form cian @ basil
Basil had been sitting in trance, when the cat’s head appeared on their lap. They smiled immediately and started humming a quiet little tune as they began issuing loves to the kitty in the form of pets and little scratches under the chin and behind the ears.
“It’s nice to see you again,” they muttered sleepily, before they let their hand rest on the cats back and returned to their afternoon snooze.
[ guard ] - jihiko @ tamaki (time to be the big sister again)
Absolute, glorious golden sunshine. That’s how he’d describe Jihiko, this wonderful girl who stepped between him and the villain that had pushed his quirk to its limits. He was bloodied and beaten, ready to start fading, but there was a smile on his face.
“Th-thank you, sunshine.”

There were always thugs who looked to take advantage of people. Yoluta had lived long enough to know that but it didn’t mean she wasn’t disappointed anytime that reality showed its face to her. And while she could handle herself in her nonviolent way, these men had weapons and so far her efforts had fallen on deaf ears.
When she spied a newcomer approaching, she breathed a sigh of relief. It wasn’t like her to get others involved but there seemed to be no other option. With any luck, the thugs would see another person and decide to move on.
“Oh, there you are! I was afraid something had befallen you.”
They were staring mostly upwards as they walked, watching the sun but trying not to really stare at it. After spending their whole life in a thickly-canopied forest, this sort of thing was still very new to them. That and the concept of money. They reached a hand down as they walked, jingled some coins in their pocket. Still strange.
They were so lost in their own thoughts, they might have walked straight past the woman if she hadn’t spoken up. They sniffed lightly and stopped, turned their head in her direction and offered up an easy smile while blinking away the spots. The confusion was clear on their face for a good few moments, but they still held out an arm to welcome her.
“It almost had.. but, I’m here now. Shall we?”
Whether they thought she had lost her mind or they had heard of this sort of interaction before, they seemed on-board as they waited for her to dictate the direction.
It was a new year, another full changing of the seasons, and something about that made Branwen extremely happy. With a hug and a quick kiss on Basil's cheek, she said, "A blessed new year to you!"
“A blessed new year!” Basil beamed happily as they returned the hug with a light squeeze, then patted at their cheek as if in awe. They didn’t often receive kisses such as that! Made them feel all warm and fuzzy, among friends.
