top 5 books, i think (i am GOING to just completely forget something i love very dearly i just know it)
- the long way to a small angry planet, becky chambers
- this is how you lose the time war, amal el-mohtar and max gladstone
- katalepsis, hazel young (this counts)
- honestly? katawa shoujo, various 4chan collaborators - does this count? is this cheating? it feels functionally book-shaped to me? maybe including a vn is cringe of me idk
- the elements, theodore gray
a series that got me into reading
deltora quest, emily rodda! my primary school best friend at the time got me into them when i was about 6, i think. we used to think we were so cool, reading books labelled as being for older kids, and we used to have great fun playing as the characters at recess and lunch. i was lief, she was jasmine, barda was imaginary (no one wanted to play barda he was Too Old)
i think i was the kind of kid who was going to end up being an avid reader somehow, but deltora quest (and the fun of sharing it with my friend) were the thing i landed on first :)

more seriously; it's been interesting to watch my answer to this change as i get older - mature - grow up? i used to be such a fiend for cool adventures, fantasy and sci fi and such, but in the last five years or so i find myself much more invested in interesting and emotionally destructive character dynamics/arcs
it feels like such a cop out to say that the thing i look for the most in a book is lasting emotional impact - yeah guys my favourite works of art are the ones that make me feel something - but that's kind of it? i know people who like books that make them feel good, which i respect, but i couldn't be further from that myself. of the books i listed above, four of them made me cry hard enough that i had to put them down for twenty minutes or so. that's the shit i am here for. i was put on this earth to Feel Things and pain sticks so so good, so please, i beg you, take my heart in your hands and leave a nice scar when you let go
(the fifth book listed above was instrumental in my decision to study chemistry at university, and as such can probably claim responsibility for more of my tears and anguish than all of the others combined)
