François Rude
Génie de la Patrie
This face is a plaster study for a relief por- traying the Departure of the Volunteers of 1792, now visible on the northeastern pier of the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. Wearing the Phrygian cap of old, this fiery, combative woman-brow furrowed, eyes bulging, mouth gaping- is the very personification of patriotic emotion.
