Yom HaShoah is Holocaust Remembrance Day, or more fully, the Day of Remembrance of the Holocaust and the Heroism.
It honours the six million Jews murdered by the Nazis and their allies during the Second World War. It also remembers those who showed incredible courage, like the fighters in the Warsaw Ghetto uprising.
The date falls on the 27th of Nisan in the Hebrew calendar, chosen because it sits near the anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising in 1943.
In Israel, it is a national day of mourning. Sirens sound across the country for two minutes, everything stops, people stand still in silence, and flags fly at half-mast. There are ceremonies, especially at Yad Vashem, where survivors or their families light torches.
It starts at sundown tonight. Many Jewish communities around the world observe it with prayers, talks and stories from those who lived through it.
The focus is on remembering the horror, but also the strength of those who resisted or survived.

at a conference I attended recently, a researcher pointed to the difficulty of finding material in archives because so much depends on the metadata and the terminology used to describe things changes over time. "it would be so helpful," the researcher said, "if I typed 'lesbian' into the library of congress database, it would also show me results that were categorised in the 50s, when the materials were interpreted as 'intimate female friendships'"
which is what tag wrangles at Archive Of Our Own do incredibly effectively: searching for "omegaverse" also leads to "alpha/beta/omega dynamics" and "alternate universe: a/b/o" and so on. but ao3 achieves this frankly incredible categorisation and indexing system by the power of countless volunteers putting in hours and hours of unpaid and unthanked free time, and it's completely understandable that most archives do not have that kind of infrastructure, but also how incredible that a fan-run website has better searchability, classification, and accessibility than the library of congress
“When I tweeted about AO3's tags a while back, I received many comments from people wishing that their professional tagging systems were as good, including users of news sites, library catalogs, commercial sales websites, customer help-desk websites, and PubMed (the most prominent database of medical research).”

Once again @plantsandlamps captivates me with her amazing work, her newest fic; Mitan, Midi has me totally hooked!
This doodle is no representing a particular scene in the fic but inspired by a part of chapter 6 when Rey inspect this mysterious french man who broke into her house who is now making her coffee.
Mind the tags before reading the fic, it deals with some topics that some of you may feel uncomfortable with.

I bring a "zionism is first and foremost a term and philosophy for jews that was co-opted by both sides of the political spectrum because they aren't allowed to say kike anymore" vibe to the function that frankly makes a lot of people uncomfortable
It is honestly suspicious that The thing to get clout on tumblr is hating Israel. Not even loving Palestinians. But calling Israelis nazis, being vocally suspicious of anyone worried about antisemitism, calling Jews KKK-coined slurs. The inflammatory stuff. It's so popular. Being incendiary specifically in this genre makes you popular. This should repel you. Instead it's gobbled up like people have been starving for a reason to hate so virulently & wish Jews dead. You defended Russian people against this kind of prejudice. You defended Chinese people against this. You should be concerned as to why this level of dehumanization is being allowed when a government's crimes are (unfortunately) not unique.
But now there are popular blogs that may or may not post jokes or twitter screenshots of news headlines interspersed by calling for the entire population of a foreign country to be put down like dogs & nobody cares. On the off chance of consequences, there are posts about the conspiracy behind their deletion or suspension, cheering when they make a new blog & continue to call jumblr an cesspit of zionazis that need the wall. It's not an acceptable way to talk about people. These people are not pro-palestine no matter what they tell you, it's an excuse for their hatred. They are just hateful pricks who would have cheered Hitler & I'm not exaggerating.
For thousands of years there has always been a "reasonable, moral" excuse to hate Jews, to say you only hate the bad ones but you could count the good ones on your fingers. There's been a cultural shift on this website & it should worry you that it's been so strongly in the direction of dehumanization.
It's like this on other websites too. Everywhere the way to get clout is to hate Israel (and Jews)
Francesca Albanese try not to be grossly and maliciously and disgustingly antisemitic, like right out of Der Sturmer, impossible edition.
And the link (here), in case anyone doubted this.
This, by the way, is what we call Nazi-style antisemitism.
I was having a semi-good discussion with somebody online about Judaism’s relationship with other Abrahamic religions, in this case Islam.
This person, who is Muslim, was explaining how the Quran discussed Jews and Christians and asked me what Judaism taught of their religion. They couldn’t wrap their head around the fact that we - don’t.
That despite our ‘shared texts’ - Judaism doesn’t discuss Islamic or Christian beliefs because not only do our texts predate those religions - they’re just not relevant.
Like yes I am aware that Islam teaches that ideas of Islam always existed and predate the religion - but that’s not what Judaism teaches, and is thus not relevant. We have some stuff in common but we’re two very different religions.
And it’s just so interesting to me that people can’t understand that Judaism exists completely independently of Christianity and Islam. Like those religions (in theory) are about as relevant to Judaism as Shintoism or a Native American tribal religion.
The only reason either of the former are relevant is because we live(d) in areas where those religions are the majority. But religiously - they’re irrelevant.
We don’t care. We just want to practice our religion and culture in peace. You can do whatever you want - just let us be.
And for some reason, that made them upset. They also denied Judaism being an ethnoreligion (they said if you believe that, it’s cool but I don’t ) Bitch it’s not a belief. It’s a fact
Why does it bother them so much that we don’t care?
average comments section on vid about hasidic jews
context: current popular conspiracy theory is that jews are all pedos and are running pedophile rings
context: there is an antisemitic conspiracy theory than only 271,000 jews died in the holocaust - so that comment is holocaust denial dogwhistle
juice box emoji is a common way antisemites on isnta say “jews”
“goyim” means non-jews (literally “nations” ie nations of the world) but antisemites believe it means cattle. the above commenter is an antisemite playacting as a jew
calling us rats/vermin is a pretty old antisemitic canard, this was popular in antisemitic propaganda in the leadup to the holocaust
“goyslop” is an antisemitic conspiracy theory that jews create junk food as a way to keep the non-jewish population unhealthy and docile. not really sure how it applies to the vid but 🤷🏻♀️

I need to set the record straight for queer people who don’t have a transphobic government holding their birth certificate hostage.
In the United States the average native-born citizen can prove their definitive citizenship in terms of eligibility for work through either a birth certificate or a passport. Birth certificates are legally owned and issued by the government of the state you are born in.
I was born in Texas. Texas has banned trans people from changing our birth certificates to match our name and gender. Texas will put me on a list if I reveal I am trans in any legal way, including having ever applied to change my gender marker. I cannot change my birth certificate.
This means the only way I can prove my eligibility for work is with my passport. Without my passport, I can’t legally apply for work.
That is why the executive order banning trans people from changing our passports to match our gender identity is such a huge problem. It’s not boo hoo I can’t leave the country to go on vacation, it’s stripping me of my labor rights and daring me to work in a sweat shop if I want to survive.
And say I did want to cross the border because oh, I don’t know, fleeing to seek asylum in a new country suddenly becomes very important—wouldn’t it be a good idea to have a passport that matches my identification to show local authorities, so they don’t deport me back to America?
I know not everyone can read legalese, but I need the LGBT community to at least try to stay up to date and connect the dots on the legal ramifications of orders like this if we are going to fight back. Because frankly, my passport was recently threatened, and I was not impressed by the ignorance I was met with from cis gays and trans folks who hail from the east/west coast.
I don’t know how the fuck we got to a place where people are seriously claiming that passports are frivolous and that restricting them is no big deal
Like idk if it’s just because I’m a Jew and this
October 5, 1938. On this date, the Reich Ministry of the Interior invalidated all German Jews' passports and required them to have a "J" sta
is burned into my cultural memory, but your passport is your fucking life, and there has never been a single point in time when I was old enough to know what one was and didn’t understand that fact
Your passport is the thing that protects you with the force of your home government while abroad, and it’s what lets you escape if your home government turns rotten. It’s the one document you grab if you can only grab one. It lives in a safe place always, and when things are really bad, that safe place is on your person, on your body, with you, so that when a jackbooted thug with a gun on his hip says “papers, please” you can say “yes, sir” and flash him the last thing still keeping you under any color of legal protection at all, and live to see another day. If they try and take your fucking passport, you should always always assume that the next thing they’ll take is your life.
Like holy shit y’all. If you have an association of passports = rich person vacations, you are coming from a place of ludicrous privilege, and you need to check yourself and dial the fuck in to the reality of what the “undocumented” part of “undocumented immigrants” actually means.
