The Nazis saw homosexuality as a threat by a small deviant group of people who were trying to force their agenda upon the masses and pollute the healthy German race. In 1936, SS chief Heinrich Himmler created the Reich Central Office for the Combating of Homosexuality and Abortion. The number of convictions under Paragraph 175 doubled in 1936 and quadrupled in 1937.

After the Night of the Long Knives, Hitler promoted Himmler and the SS, who then zealously suppressed homosexuality by saying: “We must exterminate these people root and branch … the homosexual must be eliminated”.

During the Nazis’ reign some 55,000 men were deemed to be criminals because they were homosexual. Around 15,000 of these died in concentration camps.
