OITNB - Piper Chapman; A Summary
Season 1(Autumn): Nice white lady from an upperclass family, who does juice cleanses, and “used to” be a “lesbian” but apparently still is, and has some serious issues with the angry Christian lady who hates her
Season 2(Winter): Tries pimping out another prisoner for a blanket, and starts up a prison newspaper
Season 3(Spring): Has two girlfriends, leads an illegal panty ring
Season 4(Summer): IT HASN'T EVEN BEEN A FULL YEAR. WHAT ELSE CAN THIS CRAZY BLONDE WOMAN DO?!
I’ll be honest, the few OITNB spoilers I saw made it sound like the last scene of the last episode was Poussey laying there dead and we were going to have to wait until next season for any closure…but that wasn’t the case at all. I was absolutely shocked by the last episode and everything the writers did. Rewind to back with the whole Lexa thing, there was a lot of people asking “so writers can never kill off lesbians now?” And normally the answer to that was something like “that’s not what we’re saying…there just has to be purpose behind it.” In my opinion Poussey’s death was a poignant catalyst and not some “stray bullet”. And If any show could have some leniency on who they kill off, it’s a show with an incredible amount of wlw and WOC representation. And here’s the thing, Poussey’s death absolutely was about race! Nobody attempts to revive her, they leave her there for days, they don’t notify her next of kin right away, and as Taystee states after Caputo’s media address, “they didn’t even say her name!” This whole season you see the racial divides, more so than ever. Like don’t get me started on Piper and her white power gang, but the whole season, the guards are targeting the Latinas for strip searches. And I saw someone comment that the writers tried to make the guard out to be lovable and the victim…I didn’t see it that way. When we saw Bayley’s story, what I took away from it was “How did this fuckup get hired as a prison guard??” And I think that’s what Caputo’s speech tried to highlight as well, that there’s a break down in the prison-for-profit system.
Orange Is The New Black
Spoiler Alert!
It still breaks my heart watching that episode.
“… and maybe i’m going to get my heart broken into a million little pieces … but those are just maybes, and you can’t live your life according to maybes.” - Poussey Washington
Even though I was spoiled by the death on oitnb I decided not to find out what happened and just watch it for myself but now I really wish I would have read about it first to prepare myself.
Poussey’s murder was one of the hardest things I’ve ever watched. I don’t really have a favorite character on the show but I was a fan of hers I mean how could you not be and watching that scene was just difficult, incredibly difficult.
Goals.
