âLook at me when Iâm talking to you. Both eyesss.â Kaa demanded, finding it rude whenever the other person avoided her gaze. âYou act as if Iâm going to hypnotize you. Really.â
piper had glanced around her but her blue came back to the woman when she heard the demand, slightly wider. âwell....maybe be less verbally rude and you might get what you want.â piper swallowed weakly.
âDo you want my umbrella?â Ariel asked, holding the item out to them. The rain was louder drowning out her voice a bit, âIâve got the hood of my sweater so itâs all good if you wanna take it.âÂ
âhm? oh, no....rain is fine, this is fine.â it seemed the moment she said the words the light rain poured down harder and she was left pursing her lips and looking at the sky. âActually yes, if you donât mind. your hood is going to soak through though.â piper calls back, having to raise her volume a little over the sound of the rain. she reached for the umbrella to open it and offer space underneath to the other too.
She let out a soft laugh, shaking her head, âOh, no, no Iâm not lost. Iâve been lost around here before, but not now.â She knew what the lost feeling felt like though, the helplessness, she couldnât even begin to explain how long it took her to get her way around this place. âWell, if youâre up for wandering around a little longer I can leave you be, but I think I might know where a store is. I mean, I donât think I know exactly where it is, but I know enough to help you find it.â she told her with a smile, eyeing the bracelets, which were beautiful and by her eagerness to find a shop, she assumed she made them. âDo you make those?â she asked, nodding towards the assortment of bracelets.
piper felt some relief learning the woman wasnât lost too. she shook her head quickly just after. âoh no, no...i think iâve done enough wandering for today. the streets are probably sick of me.â she smiles, blue eyes showing her gratitude towards the woman for the offering of help. âfour eyes are better than two. all i remember was that it was between a cupcake shop and one of those places that puts the racks of clothes on the sidewalk.â there were a few of those, that she knew of, but it was a start. piper glanced down to the bracelets on her wrist, nodding. âyeah, usually just with netting or rope and sea glass, but if i can find copper wire i think theyâd be better.â shinier. âiâm not keeping you from anything, am i?âÂ
Woody was watching the girl carefully, curious as to what might be going on. âI donât believe there is anyone following me.â He commented, wondering more what had been going on. âIt would be easy for someone to feel overwhelmed with everything. Do you need any help?âÂ
no one following him; probably because he was tall. piper felt like a mess suddenly, but she pulled in a breath to finally relax from the feeling that someone was following her. âi was just working on getting out of town, back to the boardwalk.â she wasnât lost, she was just...better now that sheâd calmed down. piper perked right back up. âthey run out of boardwalk fries before noon. youâd think theyâd plan ahead for that, and yet every day they run out.â

piper, born shiloh piper, was born just up the shoreline of avenir. itâs a place sheâs known her whole life, though more familiar with the beachfront areas than she is with every corner of the town. for someone whoâs lived in avenir so long, one would think sheâd know the streets better than she does, but she finds it easier to get around if she sticks to rooftops sometimes, even if itâs just to get a vantage point on where she is. this comes in handy when she roams and gets herself turned around and distracted after a day full of picking through eclectic shops in the town.Â
piper was raised by her mother alone, her father a fisherman passing through port and leaving her mother pregnant and behind. all she really knows is that she has everything she needs in her mother and in friends she grew up with or has acquired through the years. problems arose for piper and her mother when their neighbor started having an issue with piper running around their stretch of yard and beach. the little girl was just out to play but having a grumpy neighbor who couldnât seem to damper the young girlâs playfulness only fueled the old manâs anger more. piper thought nothing of it when he came out into the yard one day and waved her in closer. she expected to be yelled at again for playing âtoo loudlyâ, but instead the old man started up conversation with her and seemed to be having a good day. charismatic as piper was, she joined him. it was late that night while she was in bed that the fever set in and was soon followed by stomach pains and throwing up. piper only declined through the night with her mother trying home remedies of medicines and baths to cool her, and by morning she was admitted into the avenir hospital. testing found that sheâd been poisoned and with the high levels of bromethalin in her body, recovering took weeks before she was allowed to go home. an investigation was started into how the young girl had been poisoned but the case was opened and closed within days when police were called to the neighborâs home for a welfare check. the old man was found passed away and bromethalin based products were found in his home. with no single cause to concern for piper in the care of her mother, life moved on. piper grew and though a bit more timid than the girl she used to be, she is very trusting and still clings to her charismatic nature.Â
now twenty-one, piper works in a vintage shop in avenir full of collectibles, everything from vinyls to old instruments, the store is known for trading more than it is for selling and itâs where piper takes the opportunity to sell, or give, away some of the pieces of jewelry sheâs crafted with recycled materials,Â
âI bet.â She could only imagine, bikes werenât really her thing but she understood quite well how they worked. And the gears- those made things like going up hill much easier. Audrey however preferred her work out from her job and boxing with her sister. That was her kind of work out. But a bike ride like that actually sounded interesting. âPeople are dumb.â She stated with a shrug. Not all people, obviously, but people like that⊠that was completely unnecessary. Put your trash in the trash. She was never a nature nut but people didnât need to leave junk around to hurt other people. âThatâs fine, iâd be fine with keeping it here, would give me a chance to work with it.â She nodded. âI wonât do anything thatâll cost you more without asking though.â She confirmed. âFollow me tâ the front and Iâll get your name and number and call you when itâs ready.â She set it up to wait for them there, no one would be around the shop that would harm it. âTrust me, Iâve seen cars in worse shape, your bike isnât too bad. I would recommend trying to keep it better⊠just because itâll be cheaper in the long run.â
most people were dumb; the lady wasnât lying, at least when it came to the ignorance some of them had. still, piper held out hope that they could change, and if not them, then she at least did all she could to pick up trash left on the beach and pieces of glass when she found shard. she used those pieces of glass anyways so it was a treasure to her so long as it wasnât stuck in her tire or in the bottom of someoneâs foot. âthanks so much.â she smiles warmly. nodding to what she said about cost. piper agreed with that and watched the woman set the bike up and moved to walk with her towards the front. she didnât feel the need to glance back at it because well, she hoped the next time she saw it, it would be in a little better shape. âi can imagine. i think my friend left a car on the side of the road once just because it ran out of gas.â she muses thoughtfully. âi donât know if he ever went back for it.â piper hoped he had, but then she supposed it was his car. she was still fairly certain you couldnât just leave a car wherever you wanted forever. piper felt a little ashamed because she hadnât done much better in caring for her bike, so nodded and smiled gratefully. âiâll do better. hopefully i can move somewhere else and away from my momâs and then iâll have more space to just bring it inside.â
he kept up with her, until she stopped walking, and backed away from him, and he slowly put his arms up when she snapped at him.âi-i donât want anything maâam. i justâŠi thought someone was following us.â he tells her, concern flooding his eyesâare you alright? did someone..did someone try something?â was he too late to protect her? dammit elliot shouldnât be focusing on bolts.âiâm sorry if i scared you, not my intentions. thought someone was going to mug me.â
âus?â why did he say âusâ like he was lumping himself âwithâ her on anything or by any measure? âiâm 5âČ4, what the hell is your excuse? youâre a giant.â she manages, brows knit and eyes completely distrusting. âsomeone mug you? not to point out the obvious here but thatâs probably doubtful.â she wasnât comfortable and when she wasnât comfortable she was closing in on herself and backing herself up mentally. âshouldnât follow people so closely. youâre lucky you didnât get maced.â if that wasnât the truth...âor worse.â or kicked in the balls, that was probably the âworseâ.Â
ââcause, shy. iâd be in a body cast. i need you to write on me so i know iâm loved.â he says before heâs frowning at her.âno one would steal from me, shy. âcause my shit comes from the junkyard.â he points out to her, before heâs resting his hand on his chest.âyou called me a mongrel. i thought we were friends.â he says before heâs nodding his head and following her, watching as she wasnât clicking the clicker.âwhy you no clicky? and yes i do, because iâm sensitive. iâm a sensitive man. ohh hotdoâ. want one?â
âstick pictures and scribbles are going to make you know youâre loved? you could always walk around town and let other people sign and then, when theyâre all done telling you how loved you are, iâll write in the little tiny space that will be left.â she smiled and part of her knew better. âfrom junkyards and from peopleâs garages. theyâd steal their perfectly good things right back from you hopefully.â she didnât like that scamp stole things, but she wasnât sure sheâd say that at the moment more than she already had. âyou called me young grasshopper. if twenty-one is so young i definitely shouldnât be hanging out with an old man like you.â piper tells him, rolling her eyes and choosing to keep walking, even past the hotdog vendor that distracted scamp. shiloh set her eyes on a street of houses and started clicking the garage door opener again. she was pretty sure this day would turn up no results.
he continued walking, well aware piper had stopped, and he heard the car horn, but scamp knew they could quite easily go around him.âiâm walking here!â he yells out, before heâs feeling piperâs hip hit his, and he turns to look at her, a light chuckle leaving his lips.âand then you can write all over me, in every place.â he says giving her a wink, before heâs shrugging his shoulders.âbut stealinâ is fun. itâs a thrill. besides, i only take from those that can replace.â he tells her, before heâs putting a hand to his chest, a look of hurt appearing on his face.âyou wound me, shiloh. you fuckinâ wound me.â he says, before heâs handing her the clicker.âsee if you can get it to work.â
âwhy am i to write all over you?â she asks, curious blue eyes looking up to him. âstealing isnât fun, itâs rude. how would you like it if people stole things from you?â she asks, rolling her eyes. âyouâre not robin hood. youâre a mongrel.â she smiles, before sheâs taking the garage door opener from him and starting to click it to see if anything happened. nothing did, but she did aim her pace towards a more residential neighborhood because finding a place where there were garage doors for the opener in her hand made more sense then clicking it down the street full of shops that didnât have them. âyou wound easily.â she says gently, figuring that if they could find the garage that opened then they could give the clicker back to its rightful owner.
go go doesnât help the surprise with the question, eyebrows raising. but it doesnât take much for her lips to break into a smileâa small laughâand a shake of head. âwell, i believe there are women who would think thatâs a worth-the-money job, but no. i am not one of those,â the young woman says, hands burying into her jacketâs pockets. a quick look around the street and it is enough to confirm the man is really gone and not willing to come back and take both of them. not that would be a problemânot for go go. she was really ready to fight the man if they came to that when she started following them, so she supposes he couldâve been taken care of. âare you alright?â she decides to check, tilting her head once looking back at the girl.
she figured the woman wouldnât answer that question truthfully if it was the case, and yet she felt like she did answer it truthfully by saying it wasnât. piper relaxed more then and tucked her hands into her jacket pocket, nodding. âiâm better now. i thought it was weird that he was on every aisle i was in the grocery store, no matter which one i moved to, only a few seconds later heâd show up in the same one.â piper tells her, just happy he seemed to be gone now. âiâm piper.â she held out her hand. âthanks for being braver than me.â
âYeah, yeah thatâs what I thought.â She nodded. âGuess the mountain bikes cover it for most people.â She held it up as she knelt next to the bike, looking over the wheel carefully. Spinning it slowly as her eyes scanned every inch of the deflated wheel. âAh-â She commented quietly. âIt looks like you hit a piece of glass actually⊠Itâs wedged in there good.â She grabbed some gloves without letting go of the bike and slid them on. Grabbing the glass she pulled hard and after a little tugging it came free. âI think it will need to be replaced, it punctured the tube insideâŠâ She ran her finger over the wound and looked up. âI guess you could technically patch it but thatâs temporary and weâd still have to order. Iâd say⊠let me check the price for tires but weâve done this before and I think it was like $50 for the tire, shipping and serviceâŠ. and itâd last a lot longer than a patch⊠Plus if you left it here I can look it over for you, just a free look over⊠It looks like it might need to be oiled too.â She motioned to the chain and wheels. âWater and metal donât mix unless you keep them up rightâŠâ If it was a car or truck this woman would be getting a lecture on how to care for the vehicle.
âyou donât know a workout until youâre riding a cruiser bike uphill.â she smiles, because the bike didnât have gears the way a mountain bike did to help her along. hearing she hit a piece of glass she wasnât too surprised, but she huffed quietly because that sucked. âpeople are always bringing glass bottles on the beach and they miss the trash cans when they toss them.â she pursed her lips, disappointment in her eyes and a little annoyance at how careless people could be. âi mean people walk around barefoot down there; they should be able to without worrying about glass.â piper adds, blue eyes going to the woman as she looked over the tire and told her the price of the damage. âthatâs fine, i donât want to ride it and risk damaging the um...metal part.â she poked the tire lightly. âi can leave it here? i donât want it to be in your way so i could walk it home if it would be in your way.â piper suggests, if it would only be in the womanâs way. âyeah i know, just the salt in the air and paint really donât mixed.â she wasnât the best at putting it under a tarp when it rained though either. piper bent down to look at the bike she loved, patting the seat. âworst bike owner ever.â
Fiona could see how distraught the girl was simply by the look in her eyes. It was easy to get a little turned around when everyone was out and about. She could only imagine the anxiety accompanied with feeling as though youâre being followed, and Fiona was sure that her following the girl couldnât have helped. âIâm sure me following you over here didnât help, I apologize for that.â she told the girl with a somewhat flat smile. âBut if youâre lost perhaps I can try to help? I canât say that I necessarily know everything about this place, but I know a bit about how to get around.â
she relaxed quickly, oddly, something about the woman spoke to her reminded her of the way her mother did; with understanding. even though piper felt ridiculous she felt a little less so and that placed more spring in her stance. âcould have been worse; honestly youâre fine, promise.â she smiles, definitely relaxing more. âreally? i mean iâm kind of lost, but like....lost that would have me roaming for a few hours, not lâost and never going to make it homeâ lost. it might just take forever. i was just looking for a craft store. i saw some copper wire in someoneâs garage and iâve been looking for some.â it was shiny and it would be perfect for making something to add to the collection of colored twine bracelets on her wrist. âyouâre not lost too are you?â because if piper just got up the building then sheâd be able to see the ocean and get there, if the woman was looking for the beach, which she realized was unlikely. yeah, it was just as unlikely that she was lost too, piper.
Being sheriff, was a easier job for Woody because it gave him the chance to make sure people in his town were okay. However, this girl seemed to have something bothering her, but it didnât sound like she was all that willing to share. As she looked behind him, Woody turned to see if there was something there but didnât notice anything. âYou sure about that? Someone ainât followinâ ya, are they?âÂ
he was tall; she had to stand taller to peer around him. she didnât see anyone following her, nothing out of ordinary on the busy street. maybe sheâd been hearing things, maybe she just got overwhelmed with so many people around and it made her skittish but she knew of the sheriff and she nodded. âiâm sure.â then piper shook her head adamantly. âi donât think so. is someone following you?â she asks, peering around him just once more. âiâm just...tall buildings, tall people; lost my bearings a little.â
elliot was just walking, heâd just brought a whole lot of bolts for his plane, and was shoving them back into his bag, when he looks up to notice she was looking around her. she seemed to have started walking faster, and elliot picked up his own pace, his own eyes darting around. was someone following them? was he about to get robbed? his hand shot down to his phone, eve was on speed dial, so if anyone tried anything funny, he would call her up. he shot down the same alleyway as her, his eyes darting around them, his feet carrying him quicker, catching up with her with ease.âi think we lost them.â
when the manâs steps that had been matching her own picked up faster behind her, she tried walking faster down the alley, her wide blue eyes watching her steps and her heart beating faster. heâd been keeping up with her stride and now he closed in on her quickly, even caught up with her and sent piper flinging herself back and away from him. what the hell was he doing? what was he playing at? âwhat the hell do you want?â she snaps, swallowing weakly and clutching the strap of her bag to her shoulder. there was no one following her but this giant and she was pretty sure no one was following him unless he was following himself, him, the only person matching her steps, walking faster when she walked faster. she was about to kick him in the nuts but she wasnât willing to get that close to him.
