First things first, I’m a little late with this post. Okay I’m two weeks late with this post, do it yourself if you think you can do better. Anyhow, two weeks ago I got to attend one of the biggest events of the semester: The Korea University - Yonsei games. Once every year the two universities collide in five sports. Baseball, basketball, ice hockey, rugby and soccer. For me this was already a unique experience, for I have never been to a sports game in my life before. Especially ice hockey was amazing to watch, it’s fast paced, simple to understand and action packed. Of course rugby still holds a special place in my heart, and I shouted my lungs out during that match.
But aside from the games themselves, there is something way more unique about the KoYon games: The atmosphere. At every game there arena turns into a clash between red and blue. Students from both universities got over fifty songs praising their own, and besmirching the others. Each of them with accompanying dance moves. There is a live band and cheerleaders performing for hours on end whilst crowd is cheering and dancing along.
In all fairness, there wasn’t much to cheer about. KU got smashed in every division, resulting in an embarrassing 5-0 loss for the first time since the first games in 1956. After we lost in the last sport, soccer, Yonsei students went wild. But nevertheless, the KU crowd cheered on. They were not to be broken. No matter what, KU students are proud to be KU. Even when the music stopped, every one of us stood shoulder to shoulder and sang. That moment of just hearing the crowd sing on, that truly sent shivers down my spine.
