Marrow vs. Sabretooth.
[from Weapon X (2002) #12]
This is one of my favorite comic moments that was ever written. I mean, Gambit caused the deaths of Marrow’s entire family when she was a toddler and almost caused her death. He rescued her, and then abandoned her.
Now, years later, he’s regretting all that badness and death and destruction that he caused, and he’s trying to make up for it. But then he loses control and almost kills Marrow again. Now he feels like he can’t do anything right.
But Marrow doesn’t seem to mind. We don’t know if she remembers about Gambit’s part in the Morlock Massacre, but we do know that she’s only a kid and she’s been seriously messed up ever since that day.
She lost her mind, as well as control over her mutant powers. She became a well known homicidal psychopath, and she lashed out violently whenever provoked, taking people’s lives and laughing at it all. All she ever knew was fear and hatred and death, because of a mistake that Gambit made.
But when he almost kills her a second time, Gambit searches everywhere to find medical help for her, traveling all around an unknown Skrull world and battling an army of aliens just to find a doctor who can save her.
When Marrow comes to, her body has healed and altered into that of a beautiful woman. She can now control her exoskeleton to a certain degree. And her mind was restored to its natural, innocent state.
Marrow should be mad at Gambit. She has every right. But she forgives him and hugs him and thanks him. Their father and daughter relationship grows that much stronger.
And no matter what Remy did, Sarah would always stay by his side, even through the times when he was doing bad things or when she was losing her mind. He gave her someone to lean on, and I think that alone was what really made him a hero.
I love Marrow, and the rest of the X-men, because she suffers just like everyone else. She’s had a very rough childhood of running for her life, but now, in her teens, she suffers from her inability to blend in. She is clearly different, and people around her just don’t understand.
I heard once that anyone could empathize with the X-men when the comics first came out. If you were black, Jewish, Christian, homosexual or other, if you were born disfigured or had mental problems, you could understand where they were coming from.
It still holds true.
