i would just like to preface this post by saying that I am a HUGE fan of Brittany Broski. I think that she’s done a lot for ‘normalizing’ (hate that word but I cant really think of any other word to use) a lot of things that are often not spoken about on the internet, truly revolutionising how a lot of YouTube videos are done. she’s relatable, fun to watch, well-educated, well-spoken, talented, as well as absolutely stunning.
but with that being said, i feel a bit unnerved (?) with the way she talks about men, especially on her podcast, the Broski Report. I’ve just noticed that her view on men vs women is quite extreme and even though I’ve very much aware that a lot of times, it’s a joke, sometimes, i believe that she truly believes in many of the generalising harmful statements about men.
i understand, and sympathise with the fact that she, along with the large majority of women/fem-presenting/afab people, including me, have been deeply hurt by men in our lives. it’s frustrating and upsetting and unfair but it’s also important to recognise the systemic, patriarchal system that lead to these actions and attitudes. i am by NO MEANS saying that shitty men deserve a pass because “they’re victims too!!”, i am just saying that generalising people according to gender roles and stereotypes is what got us into this shit in the first place so we should be careful when making gender-specific, generalised statements.
i also know that you could interpret what im saying as a kind of “not all men!!” thing, but, correct me if I’m wrong, I believe when someone says “men are trash” etc etc, everyone is understands that it’s a very loose statement and we aren’t just saying every man every is trash just because they are a man.
i often agree (to a certain degree) with what Brittany talks about regarding the current state of interacting with men in our day and age, I just kind of wish that she’d address the different systems that are in play when people behave in terrible, shitty ways towards women/fem-presenting/afab people and clarify that even if you have awful experiences with the majority of men, it’s still not all of them, especially since her audience is mostly made up of late teens, early adults that might take her use of extreme modal verbs when talking about these subjects as fact and not think about the nuances regarding the subject.
