I gotta do it. I can’t resist.
So. Dark Blue Kiss. So important on sooo many levels. GMMTV is known for creating such amazing series portraying beautiful and romantic gay relationships but this series went above and beyond. Not only did it do that, but it had so many important messages attached. Each character had such important character development, that helped to create insightful and essential messages.
Like, look at Kao. We saw him go through so much in this series. He started out so afraid to come out, and let anyone know that he and Pete were together. But, in the end he was able to do it with the help and support of those around him. It’s not easy to come out, and that’s not always shown in series, or at least not to this extent.
Speaking of his coming out, his mom’s reaction was SO important. As Pete pointed out earlier in the series, it could be seen that she seemed to see the relationship between Pete and Kao and knew the truth about Kao. However, she never said anything. She let Kao tell her in his own time, because she knew he was struggling with it. She didn’t force him, or assume. And when he finally did tell her she was completely supportive.
On the topic of parents, Non’s dad (and Non himself) are also very important characters that expressed important messages. In Kao and Pete’s parents, we saw supportive, loving, and understanding parents. But, in Non’s, we saw an example of a parent who wasn’t involved in their child’s life, who didn’t try to understand him. The things Non did in the series were bad, but as Kao’s mom said, it wasn’t entirely his fault. Non didn’t have support from his dad. His emotions for Kao, were confusing and frustrating. He had found what seemed to be his first crush, and not only did that crush not feel the same, but Non had no one to support him through it. Non had no one he could tell about it. What Non truly needed was someone to understand him. His entire character showed how important it is to have someone in your life who will work to understand you, and support you.
Also I can’t even begin to express how important Mork’s character is. Sun was such an ass to him after he got beat up, and Mork didn’t forgive him easily. Even though he loved Sun, he stood up for himself and wouldn’t give in easily. He made Sun work to gain his forgiveness. He never acted ashamed of anything he did, and always respected himself. Not to mention, all the stereotypes he breaks. He’s this tough guy, who rides a motorcycle and everyone kinda sees him as a thug at first glance because he’s always getting into fights. Sun especially judged him harshly from the beginning. However, Mork is actually this great guy who stands up for people, takes care of his best friend, falls in love with his friends’s bossy barista older brother, and is a nerd who plays Pokemon Go
I also have to mention Sandee, Thada, and June. Like Kao’s mom, they all pretty much knew that Pete and Kao were together, but they didn’t pressure them until they felt they needed to for the sake of their relationship. They quietly supported them, until they had their big fight. At that time, they gently stepped in and did their best to help and continue to support them. They didn’t take sides, they just stood by them both and helped them through it.
Rain is 100% someone who should be brought up. Not only was he always supportive of his brother being gay, he also was completely supportive of his best friend, Mork, when he learned Mork was too. Through Mork and Sun’s turbulence relationship, he stood by them both and told them when he though one was in the wrong.
Last but not least, I want to talk about Kitty and Manow. Both girls liked one of the boys (SunMork) and instead of being angry when they didn’t like them back, they were supportive (especially Kitty when Sun told her he was gay) They moved on, and became good friends with them instead. Like, it made me so happy.
So to summarize, through it’s characters (and amazing plot) Dark Blue Kiss really had such amazing messages. It didn’t just have incredibly cute and romantic romances, it also told of the struggles of coming out, showed different types of relationships (friends, family, etc.) and how important support and understanding it is. GMMTV has done it again. This is why I will always love and support their series. These kinds of stories, these kinds of messages.(Also have to say that the actors esp TayNew and PoddFluke) did an amazing job portraying the characters and bringing such beautiful stories to life.
If literally anyone actually read this entire thing, you are now my best friend.
