the thing about enjolras with marius vs enjolras with grantaire is that okay marius is wrong about a lot of things, and misguided, & not used to being politically active, but he is obviously demonstratively passionate about politics and has clearly been listening to the conversations they've been having and offering his own opinion, which is something enjolras really values. so he sees this as someone who's sort of on the wrong track at this point but who cares, and so has potential that they can work with. as opposed to grantaire, who doesn't care. which is the one thing enjolras can't really stand, like it's one thing to interact with someone who is wrong but passionate & engaged but it's another thing to deal with someone who doesn't care or have any real political beliefs. it's the Lack of interest & engagement & opinion that really irritates enjolras

the whole marius thing is actually really interesting to me tbh because it shows that it is actually fairly easy to get enjolras' attention — you just have to show up and care about things and want to engage with others about them, and he will be there to meet you on it. we know from various points of the book particularly 'eniolras and his lieutenants', but also at the barricade, that he personally knows every member of this group really well, like he has clearly been talking to all of them. and then when marius shows up and gives his crazy opinion on napoleon, even though he's misguided on it enjolras is interested & wants to discuss it more with him. so like if grantaire wanted to he could have done this — put forward some serious interest or opinion — & enjolras would probably have genuinely listened to him & spent time with him & probably felt more positively towards him. but tbh I think he sort of prefers to just be pining from a distance, like if enjolras actually showed an interest in him he wouldn't know what to do with it because he 'loves' enjolras as an ideal and not as a real human guy whose real interests & cares you get involved in. it's not that he can't get enjolras' attention & regard it's that he won't because is is too comfortable and safe (in a miserable way tbc. but like a comfortable & safe sort of suffering he can sort of savour like a bruise) in his protective shell of irony & apathy to actually take that step. he is in this situation of his own making when getting out of it is entirely achievable
