Hey so I was thinking about Hamilton (as you do) and the Jedi games (as you do) and the cycle of violence themes in fiction and literature (as you do). A while back, I saw a Star Wars post that took scenes from Rogue One, the OG trilogy, and the sequel trilogy, in that order, and set it to the Hamilton lyrics from “My Shot:”

And if we win our independence

Is that a guarantee of freedom for our descendants?

Or will the blood be shed begin an endless cycle of vengeance and death with no defendants?

First off: Excellent lyric use with Star Wars.

Second: How do characters deal with breaking out of the cycle of violence… but they keep getting dragged back into the cycle?

Because I think about Cal at the end of Jedi: Survivor. He does NOT want to fight, let alone kill, Bode. He wants out of the cycle of violence. Between fighting the Empire and retiring to a life of safety on Tanalorr, he’d rather retire in peace. But the fight keeps coming back for him. “The fight is all I know.” Even when it looks like there’s a decent shot at finding some peace after defeating Dagan Gera and getting the map to Tanalorr, the Empire comes to their doorstep and he loses Cere and Eno to the ever-present fight.

By the time he confronts Bode on Tanalorr, he’s looking for a way out of the oncoming fight. A way to break the cycle of violence. He insists on talking to Bode first, appealing to his paternal sense in defense of Kata. But Bode, who has lived as reluctantly in the cycle of violence, does not look for a way out. “The fight is all I know.”

Thus Cal is drawn back into the cycle of violence against his will and now must carry that weight forever.

How do you break out of the cycle of violence when the cycle won’t leave you alone? When the people you care about are stuck in it? Are there times when the breaking free of the cycle of violence demands violence?

“Or will the blood be shed begin an endless cycle of vengeance and death with no defendants?”

I have no answers, but these are nonetheless interesting questions to ponder and explore. Makes me even more excited for Jedi 3.

I love how much Jedi Survivor behaves like a mirror. I could already tell Dagan was supposed to be a mirror/cautionary tale by the time Cal had to go after Rayvis, but to see it played out symbolically in the boss fight was so fun. Cal and Dagan don't actually end up on the ceiling, as we see when BD runs over to Bode, it's all a hallucination on Dagan's part. But in this illusion he takes Cal to a literal parallel plane (?) as they finally fully confront each other.

And then of course, when Cal takes a trick out of the old Zeffo book and turns Dagan's hallucinatory tricks back onto him to reflect his worst fear: Santari's judgement.

Bode kinda falls into this mix too, esp when it comes to all of their reasons for going to Tanalorr. All of them have some external "selfless" reason for going to Tanalorr: Dagan wants a new frontier for the Order, Cal wants a safe place away from the Empire, and Bode wants a home for Kata. But internally, their reasons are not the same (except Bode sort of. Hence the "kinda" earlier). Dagan wants the prestige, Cal so desperately wants to feel accomplished, and Bode... prioritizes family a little too hard and takes away a vital resource that could absolutely be shared? I guess is the best way to fit him into that. Although in Cal being a parallel to Dagan if they use Tanalorr offensively the Empire would find a way in.

Does Bode parallel Santari more, then? They both take away the way to Tanalorr from someone who wants it ridiculously badly, because they don't want Tanalorr to be used in an offensive way? I guess Santari had the more selfless approach though, she was truly worried about Dagan whereas Bode just wanted Tanalorr for him and Kata.

Anyway, since this is a reflective point for Cal, I really wonder where that'll take the third game. We'll just have to wait and see, though

saddest part of jedi survivor is that if you go through all the dialogue whatever’s with the npcs, a lot of them leave koboh for one reason or another. mosey because she’s restless. toa because she’s meeting with other archaeologists.

i think we should be talking about the semi-recent advancements in cystic fibrosis treatment like all the time every day. there hasn’t been a drug like this since AZT medications for HIV infection it is truly fucking miraculous and very important

basically: cystic fibrosis is a genetic disease which makes the mucous a person generates extra sticky. it used to kill people in infancy, then with advancements in medical tech it killed people in young childhood, and until very recently cystic fibrosis patients could expect to live until about thirty years old with consistent painful lung infections and complications.

in 2019 the FDA approved a drug called trikafta (which is really three drugs in one) for cystic fibrosis treatment. what it essentially does is patch up the malfunctioning proteins that cause the extra sticky mucus. trikafta is effective on about 90% of cystic fibrosis patients.

people who had spent their entire lives in and out of hospitals, on and off of ventilators, suffering from pneumonia and sometimes treated through painful procedures like intubation took this drug, got out of bed, coughed up an entire lifetimes worth of mucus out of their lungs over the course of a few hours, breathed clearly for perhaps the first time in their lives, and now go on to live well into their seventies.

like isn’t that insane. isn’t that amazing. doesn’t that give you hope for the future of medical advancements and treatment. fuck. i think about it all the time……

it really pisses me off when adults sit there and drill it into kids’ heads that their youth is fleeting and tell them things like “enjoy your childhood while it lasts because this is the best it’s gonna get”. why are you telling children that adulthood is the worst thing they can experience? seriously what the fuck is wrong with you, why are you trying to make them feel like growing up is a fate worse than death? trying to convince them their life is over before it even begins? i’m tired of that shit. because tell my why my 12 year old cousin told me when she turns 30 she’ll be so depressed she’s just gonna cry all the time. what the fuck. kids don’t need to hear that their already stressful and overwhelming lives are never going to get better, that the abuse and lack of autonomy they face is apparently the highlight of their lives. they need to hear about adults who are happy to be alive and happy to have made it to their age. they need to know that growing up rules, it’s a gift and life does not have to suck for them, that they have a future that’s worth sticking around for. this rhetoric is so damaging mentally and i’m about to start hitting the adults who parrot it. i’m sorry you hate your life but you don’t get to dump your issues on these kids. don’t piss me off and leave these babies alone!

I remember my dad once telling me that my childhood years were the best years of my life, and thinking "if this is the best it gets, I'm going to kill myself when I'm an adult"

so coming from someone with mental illness in my early teens: they don't have to be the best years of your life. Personally, I've found growing into myself (plus getting treatment for my mental illness, that helped a lot) and figuring out who I am has made me much happier than I was when I was younger.

i do think it's so interesting that essentially ianto dies bc Jack tries to pull a the doctor style move (going up to confront the alien bad guys face to face and grandstand about how humanity won't bow down to them and basically play "are you willing to take us on" chicken without actually having a plan for what to do if the alien bad guys just go "fuck you" and hit the kill everyone button) and because he's a character within the show he doesn't understand that the reason this always works out for the doctor is. fundamentally. because doctor who is a lighthearted family show for the whole family. and bc that means for the doctor there will always either be some kind of deus ex machina to save the day (or at least the main characters) or the show just won't have the alien bad guys go fine have it your way and gas everyone in the building. And that actually there's nothing keeping him and his loved ones safe bc they are missing the one crucial thing the doctor has which is the protection of the 9pm watershed. anyway i think genre blindness is awesome as a trope so i'm having a lot of what can from a certain point of view be called fun here

something about how cal starts using mind tricks more as you explore the worlds in survivor once you've finished the main story.

In the story, he only uses it on imperials, so sure, you get why. but then he starts using it on people who he thinks are making the wrong choices, like the anchorite

the doctor told me aliens keep killing his companions so I asked how many companions he has and he says he just goes to earth and gets a new companion afterwards so i said it sounds like he's just feeding his companions to aliens and then he started crying
