During the 1990s, Vnukovo Airlines seemed on a good track to become one of Russia's major brands in aviation. Its distinct blue and copper fleet of Tupolev 154M and Ilyushin 86 aircraft flew frequent schedules out of Moscow's then second-largest airport after Sheremetjevo, located at an easy 15 to 25 minutes travelling distance from many parts of the Russian capital. Lucrative wet-lease contracts for some of the Tupolev's to charter airlines in the Mediterranean, former Yugoslavia and Turkey added much welcome hard currency income.

Both Vnukovo Airport as well as its home carrier however lost their advantageous position during the 1998 financial crisis, one of several financial downturns in the Russian economy, and remained in critical financial conditions after turning down an offer by Sibir Airlines who wanted to merge with Vnukovo Airlines to get a solid grip on the aviation market of the Russian capital.

Investments started flowing to the capital's most distant airport Domodedovo instead, a good hour to an hour and a half in the South of the city, further weakening Vnukovo's position until the airline collapsed in 2001, with Sibir then finally acquiring the left-overs at a bargain.
