Feveruary Day 3: Caught in the Rain

Mateo let himself into the apartment with his clothes sopping wet and his hair a frizzy mess of damp curls on top of his head. He was wearing a puffer jacket without a hood.

Nina looked up where she was scrolling through her social media feeds from the couch as he entered. "¡Oh Dios! What happened to you?! You're soaking wet!"

Mateo sighed. "Some jerk blocked my car in this morning so I had to take the train to work. It started pouring rain on my way home from the station."

Nina clucked her tongue and rolled her eyes at her younger brother. "You could have called me, idiota. You could have found shelter somewhere and I would've picked you up."

Mateo rolls his eyes back at her. "It's too late now. I'm gonna take a hot shower."

He walked off and returned almost twenty minutes later wearing a cozy hoodie and comfy sweatpants.

He sat down on the couch but still seemed like he hadn't completely warmed up yet.

Nina draped a nearby throw blanket over Mateo's shoulders.

"Gracias," he mumbled as he adjusted it and wrapped it tighter around himself.

"You could end up getting sick by going outside in weather like that without a proper rain jacket," Nina scolded. "You need to dress more appropriately for these Chicago winters. We're not in Cartagena anymore."

"I'll be fine," he says stubbornly. "I'm not gonna get sick from a little rain."

"Let's hope so," the older sibling sighs...

But Nina heard sneezing coming from Mateo's bedroom the very next day as she was making her morning coffee.

''Achoo! Achoo! Achoo!''

She found no joy in being proven right.

Troy Gets Sick At The Movies

Nina and Troy were at the movie theatre on a date. It was a weekday so tickets were cheaper and it was less crowded. There were only two other couples in the screening room with them.

Nina was really enjoying the movie but she couldn't help but notice that Troy kept shifting around in his seat as if he just couldn't get comfortable.

"Are you okay?" she whispered to her boyfriend. "You keep fidgeting,"

"I'm fine. Just a bit of a stomachache."

"Do you want to go home?" Nina asked with a concerned look on her face.

Something wasn't agreeing with Troy's stomach and he felt kinda bloated but he didn't feeling bad enough to have to go home and end their date early.

"It's propably just indigestion," he told his girfriend. "I'll be fine,"

"Okay. If you're sure," she said, slightly hesitatant.

She turned her attention back to the movie playing on the big screen.

About twenty minutes later, Troy was starting to feel much worse. What had started off as a mild stomachache had now turned into overwhelming nausea.

He felt really sick now. It was definitely not just indigestion. His stomach was churning like a washing-machine.

A wet-sounding burp escaped past his lips and he felt his mouth rapidly fill with saliva.

Nina's full attention was now on her boyfriend and not the movie.

"I think I'm gonna be sick!" Troy exclaimed, swallowing thickly.

Thinking quickly, Nina emptied out the popcorn bucket as Troy started to gag.

"Here!" she exclaimed, holding the container under her boyfriend's chin.

He clutched onto the bucket in his lap tightly as his stomach sent up a thick stream of vomit that almost made him choke.

Nina had one hand on the bucket to help keep it steady while the other one rubbed up and down Troy's back while he threw up.

After a couple of minutes he of puking his guts up Troy was left gagging unproductivly over the bucket and he gestured for Nina to take it away.

Looking at his own vomit was making him feel queasy again.

Nina picked up the almost-full popcorn bucket, being careful not to spill it and disposed of it in a bin that stood just inside the door of the screening room. Troy followed a few feet behind her.

"Were you feeling sick before we left the house?" Nina asked once they were outside of the screening room.

"No. It just came on suddenly," Troy told her. "I think something I ate for lunch was off."

His stomach gave a loud gurgle and he stopped walking.

"I need the bathroom," he told Nina as he felt his lower stomach cramp up.

"You're going to throw up again?" she asked but Troy shook his head.

"I don't need to throw up," he said quietly, his cheeks heating up a bit.

"Oh..." Nina mumbled dumbly when she realised what he meant.

"I'll be back in a few minutes," Troy told his girlfriend and then made a beeline for the men's bathroom that was luckily almost completely empty.

Nina walked over to the little snack bar and bought a bottle of water.

She waited for about fifteen minutes until Troy came back out.

"I wanna go home" he said miserably when he reached her, one arm wrapped around his tummy.

"Yeah. Okay Baby," Nina said softly, guiding him towards the exit. "Let's get out of here,"

When they reached Troy's car he silently handed Nina his keys. They both got into the vehicle and put on their seatbelts.

She handed him the water and he drank some of it before putting it in the cup holder between the two seats.

"I'm sorry for ruining our date. I know you were looking forward to seeing that movie," Troy spoke up as Nina pulled out of the parking lot.

"You have nothing to be sorry for. It's not your fault that you're sick," Nina told him, giving his hand a gentle squeeze. "I don't care about a stupid movie. I just want to make sure that you're okay,"

"It's not a stupid movie. I could tell you were really enjoying it before I got sick. I know Margot Robbie is your favourite actress," he tried to argue.

"I can always go watch it again," she shrugged. "I might watch it with the girls if they're not busy next weekend. I think the'll really enjoy it too."

They sat in silence for a few minutes, the only sound being the cheesy pop songs playing on the radio at a low volume.

They were about five minutes away from their apartment when Troy's nausea returned with a vengeance.

"Oh God! Stop the car!" he ordered. "I'm gonna puke!"

"Okay. Okay. Just hang on a sec." She pulled the car over onto the hard shoulder just in time for Troy to open the car door and empty the contents of his stomach on the side of the road.

After almost a minute, Troy leaned back in his seat and took a few deep breaths.

"Do you think you're done?" Nina asked.

"Yeah. I think so," Troy mumbled. "I just wanna lie down."

"We're almost home Baby," Nina said, patting Troy's knee reassuringly.

She started driving again and soon they were back at their apartment.

Troy walked into the kitchen and took some Pepto to help his tummyache.

He felt relieved they had the place to themselves. Nina's brother Mateo and his girlfriend Lydia also lived with them but they had gone to visit her parents for the weekend.

Nina grabbed a cozy blanket and a large mixing bowl and brought them both over to the couch in the living-room.

They changed into more comfy clothes and then spent the rest of the evening cuddling together while watching...

Troy threw up again twice and he had to get up a couple of times to use the bathroom. But by the next morning he was feeling 100% again.
