RAW for JPG for dummies
It is undeniably known fact that RAW files are much better and useful than JPG. Yet for dummies who still argue, photography educator Tony Northrup goes beyond theory, detailing the differences and actually showing us how much more leniency RAW files allow for in post-production.
What format do you shoot in? And do you agree that RAW format is better?
What is Book Light? And how is it a beauty lighting?
Shane Hurlbut coined the term 'Book Light' for the most soft and good wrap around lighting. This type of lighting creates very soft shadows.
A book light is simply a bounce source that is diffused with another layer of diffusion. It creates an image of an open book. Your light is positioned 45 degrees off of your bounce; then your diffusion layer can be joined at the end of your bounce where your space is limited. You can make a thick book, which will make your light softer because there is more distance between the source and your diffusion layer. Your bounce has now become your source, not your light. So the further you move your diffusion away, the softer the light will get. I like to use many different diffusions as well as bounce sources to create different types of light quality.

This Inspiring Little Speech by Gregory Heisler Could Change your Life
Well renowned portrait photographer Gregory Heisler in his interview above with Maine Media Workshops, shares invaluable insight and advice for photographers.

How Much Retouching Can You Finish In 6 Minutes?
Jeff Rojas explains that sometimes you don't need to go overboard for certain clients. By challenging yourself you can see where you stand in the level of skill with Photoshop.
Dubbed as the 'Dirty Edit Challenge' you can see for yourself what you can accomplish in the slotted time. Remember, it doesn't have to be perfect.
Test yourself to see if you can produce a decent output and he says you might be surprised. I will be soon uploading a video to show you how well this is true.
Would you do take up this challenge?
Pixels.com comes with an cool augmented reality app to see prints to customers.
If you haven't heard of pixels.com then it is a site where an artist can upload his work and see it online as prints. After you have uploaded your creative art online pixels.com helps sell those as prints for you. You can create a profile on their website and like twitter it allows followers. Great stuff right. I just enrolled myself today.
To improve the user experience they have release a neat little app. The best part of it is its augmented reality. Once you have downloaded the app to your iPad you just have to point the iPad towards the wall with the app open. Then chosen artwork shows on the wall like a picture frame. Then you can scroll through various artworks and can buy the one that you think will look good on your wall
Pixel.com says that with this app Photographers and Artists will now be able to:
Create a profile within the app and upload images directly from an iPad or Dropbox
Set their own prices for a variety of print products, including: canvas prints, framed prints, metal prints, greeting cards, and more
Showcase their images to potential buyers using the app's virtual reality interface
Customize their images with millions of frame and mat combinations
Process transactions directly from within the app
Interact with other artists and photographers via comments, likes, favorites, and more
While prospective clients and art enthusiasts will be able to...
Browse through millions of images from more than 250,000 living artists and photographers
Search for images based on keywords, artist names, image titles, and more
Comment on, like, and favorite images
Customize images with millions of frame and mat combinations
View images on their walls using the app's target-tracking virtual reality interface
Purchase museum-quality artwork directly from within the app
Follow their favorite artists and photographers and receive push notifications when those artists and photographers upload new images
The actual app is a lil different from what is shown in the video. Still, it's a cool new tool that you can find out more by visiting here, or by downloading the app from the app store.
Running a website yourself might be a task on its own. Now making sure it is available on search engines is another task that most of us don't understand. To help the non-tech people understand Google has released a SEO guide for every website.
Initially this document was created to circulate these points to the internal team. But later they realized that is best to be given to the users too.
I use most of the points mentioned here to optimize my photography website. Hope this helps you too.
Thanks, Raj.
5 Major ideas you can learn from my Stock Photography shoot with banana.
Yesterday I did a stock photography shoot with banana. I use banana in my shoots so many times and every time I use it I learn something new. It was mostly through trial and error. Because I do not want you to go through the same trouble I put up a video together so you can see how its done. I will try to make a tutorial video on the same soon.
Be choosy: You must have had banana so many times but many would miss out on the fact that banana skin is so sensitive. Even a small scratch can create a mark on the skin and after a while it turns from brown to black. So pick the banana which are new and less scratched. A visit to the fruit shop early in the morning will help you get the best of the lot.
Grouping is better: When it’s a stock photography shoot it is always advised to take single products. Then we tend to club the products together to form concepts. As far as I learnt shooting with banana is that it looks better when kept or two or four together.
Shadows are important: Usually we try to avoid shadows in stock images to get that perfect while background. So when I bounced too much of light on to the product I got a photograph which lost all the details. So always try to use a single light and use a reflector to get the shade properly.
Shoot with Speed: The moment you cut open a banana for shoot the clock starts ticking. Very soon the banana will start to develop black edges. And that too specifically when kept under the studio lights. So time is very crucial in getting good photographs. So plan you shot before and then cut your bananas so that you can save time. Because bananas are so cheap (Rs. 4/per piece) you can actually buy more banana if you want to experiment with sliced banana. Ofcourse post is always there to clean up a bit but why waste precious energy when you can actually shoot good photos.
Patience with Photoshop: No matter how clean your banana is or fresh without any scratches when you see the photo in 22MP the dirt is very clearly visible. I will not joke but it took me more than 30 minutes to simply clean one photograph (leave alone editing and post). So learn to have patience.
Most Important Tip: I keep telling this to every other budding photographer I meet. Please do not waste you money in buying a lot of props or renting all the lights you see you on youtube videos. Check out the video above to see how I shoot with just one or at the max two lights.
I hope you have learned from my stock images shoot. Please let me know you comment and do ask your questions?

Drone Video: Flying into ocean of fireworks on July 4th (Independence Day Celebrations)
This the first I have ever seen a video like this. This July 4th 2014 a drone video was shot using GoPro Hero 3 Silver edition and DJI Phantom 2. This was taken by videographer Jos Stinglingh in West Palm Beach.
Earlier in April this video was shared by Go Pro which showed what was possible with Hero 3+.
3 Steps to become good at what you are doing
You can be a photographer, an artisit or a football player. But these three points are going to help you make you better.
What is your core? Take a break. Ask yourself and be damn true in answering the question. What do you like doing the most? Where is your passion? Anyone can Google it and do it themselves. But the key point is to do it again and again. To master it and to become skilled in it. Have passion for it. Think and do always one thing at a time. Love it, dream it and do it. And only that until you complete it.
Test: Just because you have done a task it does not become the best. Even the best directors in the world have gone through the failing phase after they raised to excellence. Always ask people around for suggestions on your work. Take the criticism humbly even if you do not accept it. Do some digital marketing techniques to see where your product stands. Testing is no more an add on. Start integrating the costs of testing into your budget during the initial planning stage. Tweak it until you know you have proof there is demand for your concept.
Promote your story: Every bit of PR is necessary. Talk about yourself and tell your story. While showing your portfolio might work, coupling it along with a story will make it interesting for the client to associate with your work. Let people know how long they have been in the industry. Write a 'about-me' piece on how you got to the point where you are now.
The Always Hidden Camera at the World Cup
Northlight has been sent an image showing an always covered Canon camera. Apparently this photographer is always in the exact same spot on the side of the pitch. The camera is always covered in the white tarp, while no other camera is. It’s definitely a Canon as you can easily tell it’s a Canon lens.
canonrumors.com have been told numerous times that the replacement to the EOS 7D would be at the World Cup going through professional testing. Maybe that’s what’s under the cover.

The Best 7 Simple Photography DIY
These days Photoshop and mobile app filters can bring out different effects in a photograph. But doing them straight from the camera is always cool. This is what the photographers of yesteryear's tried doing. They tried to bring some effects like double expose all in one frame of their film.
Expensive camera's these days give you these possibilities. But as the great photographers always said its the skill that matters and not the equipment. You can shoot some kickass photographs from stuff that you have lying in your house.
Watch Leo Rosas explain these simple DIY. I specially love the Vaseline and bokeh effect.
Video Tip: 6 Camera Hacks
For many of us our camera is our closest pal. But how many of us do know our camera entirely?
ZY Productions gives us a useful video tutorial. It might not be helpful for intermediate and pro photographers. So if you are just a beginner in photography or a hobbist then this video is for you.
Do not use screen protector: It totally defeats the purpose of clear view technology.
Always have Blu-Tac in your bag: You will never know how useful and necessary it becomes during a shoot.
Enable Direct AF selection: When this is selected you can your joystick or joypad to change for your focus points within the camera.
A business care can act as a flash reflector: Just place the card beneath your flash and this can bounce the light to the roof giving you a nice soft light on your subject.
Use Step-Up rings. These can help you fit different filters of varied sizes fit on you lenses easily. Now you don't have to buy separate filter for each lens with different diameter.
Convert your Mic stand to Flash Stand: Using a Mic adapter you can put your speed light on the Mic Stand.
Hope this session of tips makes your photo shoot easy. Thanks for reading.
