City Guide - Étretat
Strap up and get ready for a spontaneous road trip. We are heading to France in this blog post where we will enjoy the rocky cliffs of Etretat. Get dreamy over salty, ocean air and the soothing noise of the waves smashing into the cliffs. We will compare our visit between the early risers and the night owls. So get yourself a blanket, a comfy seat and daydream with me.
NIGHT OWLS
Those of you who like to sleep in and enjoy there mornings in bed don’t have to miss out on all the beautiful sights that Etretat has to offer. Even at sunset you are able to take great photographs.
Do keep in mind that at this time of day it will be more crowded. When we arrived there were a lot of couples and families with children strolling down the cliffs. Even though it was pretty crowded we were able to take a lot of photographs with no people in them. Sometimes you have to wait your turn. For example at the provided lookout posts. But when you just try to walk ahead first there’s no problem at all. Also by the time you’re back those people are usually gone again.
I suggest bringing a small snack or maybe even a bottle of wine. When we were done shooting we found a little place amongst the cliffs to sit. The view stretches out so far and the quiet is delightful. There are no other sounds than the ocean beating on the cliffs and the seagulls flying by. Which, for me, is really relaxing.
EARLY RISERS
If you are like to wake up before dawn and don’t mind driving at night then please do. We were able to enjoy both the sunrise and sunset at Etretat but my favourite time was definitely during sunrise.
Because most people wake up later and don’t have the same objective as we do, we almost had to cliffs to ourselves. Besides from people getting their morning exercise in and photographers there was no one there. The sky was misty though and there it was a bit rainy during our morning there. Which made it a bit more difficult to photograph at times. We also wanted to go down the cliffs to get on the beach. There is a steep pathway that can lead you there. But when the soil is moist it is not recommended at all. So be cautious and decent at your own risk.
Our photographs that were taking during the sunrise were beautiful to start with. Also the mist gave it a natural moody feel which I love in photography.
DUDE WHERE’S MY CAR
When you arrive at the village that is Etretat you will quickly know where you have to head to see the cliffs. It’s a very touristy place and everyone is headed in the same direction. Parking your car isn’t difficult but be prepared to walk for a while. When you are lucky you can park near the ocean side and just cross the road to take in all the views. For those who don’t want to risk it they have provided parking lots just outside of the village. You can’t miss it and it’s only a fifteen minute walk from there. So if you’re not in a hurry to rush on over to the beach and want to enjoy the village as well I suggest you park your car in one of those parking lots.
STAYING THE NIGHT
We drove to Etretat somewhere in the afternoon to arrive at the spot in the evening. The way we had planned it out was that we would stay the night. That way we could also enjoy the sunrise on the cliffs. If this is what you also plan on doing I have some tips for you.
There are always a lot of options when you want to stay the night in a foreign village. Since Etretat is quite touristy they have provided some options for you. The most obvious one is of course staying at a hotel. For those of you who prefer luxury and a soft bed this is your number one choice. For those of you who can do without the luxury for one night there are cheaper options. Cheaper as in free!
When we drove towards the village there were some car parks and one of those car parks was also for mobile homes and campers. So bring your tent and pop it up. Because if you can do without a nice bed you can stay the night for free. Or you can do what we did. Our car is big enough to fit a double mattress so we inflated it at a gas station using the air pump that inflates tires. Works like a charm!
THE VERDICT
I loved visiting Etretat both at night time as at dawn. The village is very quaint and cosy so I do recommend staying longer and enjoy a nice meal there as well. During our visit in August the place was never too crowded and it was very enjoyable walking around and taking photographs in peace. These must be the most beautiful cliffs I’ve seen and visited so far.
Besides the cliffs and the village of Etretat there are also some other activities you can do.
I recommend that you also head for Mont Saint-Michel when you have savored your stay in Etretat. It is just a three-hour drive away and it is a very beautiful place. We didn’t head for it because the weather was just not in our favor.
Make sure to visit the right and the left side of the cliffs surrounding Etretat. At the right you can visit the church and at the left you can hike all the way down to the light house and even further towards the harbor.
