âCamae: Walkinâ will only get you so far, Preacher Kang. King: Weâre not just walking; weâre marching Camae: Whatever it is, it ainât workinâ. â
(206)
â[White folks] hate so easily, and we love too much.â
(211)
âFear makes us human. We all need the same basic things. A hug. A smile.â
(212)
âIf only they could see that love, love is the most radical weapon of destruction there is.â
(227)
Right before MLK enters the Promised Land: âKing: Is it gonna hurt? Camae: You wonât feel the hurt. The world will.â
(243)
âKing: Will there be others after me? To carry on the baton. Camae: Many, many will carry it onâŠâ
(243)
When MLK Calls God: âKing: Uhm. God? Itâs uhmm⊠(Putting on his âKing voiceâ.) Dr. Martin Luther King, J- oh, yes. Michael, to you⊠Yes Maâam⊠yes Maâam⊠yes⊠Maâam. (He pulls the phone from his ear and whispers.) Is She- Camae: Black? Mmhm. And PROUDâŠâ (234)

âPowerful the man that get more done dead than aliveâ (241).
âHer prayers are powerful⊠She gots a way with words. A gift. Soundinâ like she gone be a preacher one dayâ (224).
This is when Camae is talking about hearing MLKâs daughter, Bernice, praying that it wonât hurt him when heâs assassinated. Bernice King did, in fact, become a preacher. This shows how much research Hall put into the writing of this play, and how many little off hand comments could be overlooked, when they have historical value.
âCamae blows on the end of a cigarette. It lights up. King stands stunned⊠Camae: I know. Angel breath is some hot breath. King: Youâre. An. Angel? Camae: In the fleshâ (222).
âWe have been drowned by hoses. Our dreams being washed away. We have been bitten by dogs. Our skin forever scarred by hatred at its height. Our godly crowns have been turned into ashtrays for white men at lunch counters all across the South.â
Camae, (210)
Throughout the play, MLK requests that a few different people acquire him Pall Mall cigarettes. This is one of the many ways that Hall makes Dr. King human. A little known fact about Dr. King was that he was, in fact, a smoker. This shows how in depth the research Hall did for this show was.
In 2010, Hall won the Olivier Award for Best New Play for The Mountaintop, making her the first black woman in history to win in that category. https://www.todaytix.com/insider/nyc/posts/12-female-playwrights-of-color-you-should-know
