I want it to be known that this is not a rewrite born from hate. I loved the BW series growing up and I still enjoy it. Every series has issues that Iâd like to rewrite, but unlike other seasons, Unova wasnât the final story the writers wanted to tell. Thereâs the infamous Team Rocket vs Team Plasma arc that was canceled due to real world issues that was out of the writerâs hands. Then thereâs the world wide release of B2W2 which the writers were forced to incorporate into the story. In the end, the end product just wasnât what it was meant to be.
So this is my attempt to bring those ideas to life. In addition to things I personally would have done differently or would have just liked to see. This is not an âI could have done this betterâ since that just isnât fair. This is me having fun. I hope youâll enjoy it too.
Wondering what the Best Wishes fans thought about RaimonTownShipping. (Bianca x Luke)
I did lowkey ship this back in the day, before the Clubsplosion episodes and then SpokeShipping took my full attention.
Now I'm kinda looking it to it again. I thought their interactions were cute, and I thought they argued like an old married couple. Like here, Luke is annoyed that Bianca only recorded Zorua instead of the competition. But they are quick to make up. Luke seems to enjoy Bianca's company.
Then there's just this running gag of Bianca getting into the shots somehow. And the love she has for Luke's Zorua in particular. Like she's their child lol.
My oldest Iris drawings from 2010 and 2011. My art was intentionallu undersaturated back then (because unsaturated colours felt more "realistic" to me) and I loved the shading with grey/black look. I wanted to emulate a Sugimori-esque watercolour wash on oekaki.
Ash has arrived in Nacrene City to face the Gym Leader Lenora for his second Gym Badge. As the impressive curator of the Nacrene City Museum, Lenora seems to have a challenge in store. One cannot help but wonder what her battle style will be. Weâll soon find out, as their battle is about to begin!
âLenora?â
âYes, Ash?â
She didnât turn to Ash as she spoke him, continuing to walk down her library. It was a grandiose place, multistory and filled to brim with books of all kinds, to a child it seem an endless amount. The visitors were a tad scarce at the moment, last nightâs Team Plasma incidentÂ
âIâm just wondering where the battlefield is,â Ash said. He, Hawes, Iris, and Cilan trailed after Lenora.Â
âRight, it doesnât seem like it be in here,â Iris said.
âOh, youâll see soon enough.â
She stopped just before the library wall. Hawes stepped beyond her, and placed his hand onto an electronic keypad. With the hum from the technology, the metallic doors in front of them separated to open the group to an even deeper section of the library.Â
âWeâre entering an area which is closed to the general public,â Hawes said.Â
Ash, Iris, Cilan, and Pikachu felt out soft gasps as the doors finished opening. Lenora held up a hand, welcoming them to enter.Â
It was simple, really. A long hall of library rows that reached from floor to ceiling. It was almost claustrophobic if one were to be honest.Â
Lenora spoke, âThis part of the library is reserved for rare books and study materials. Only visitors with special permission from us can enter here.â
âThis is the finest collection in the entire Unova region,â Hawes gave a show of the place with a sweep of his arm, âYou can learn everything about Unovaâs history and culture right in here!âÂ
Iris was quickly whispering at his side, âI could think of worse things to do than read.â
Then Cilan was on his other, âTruth is, this may be a part of your Gym challenge. Itâs quite possible that everything Lenora is doing is her manner of testing you.â
âTesting me?â Ash looked back at Lenora, Pikachu parroting the question, âPika?â
Lenoraâs expression did not change even as Ash met her gaze. She gave only a hum of a giggle.Â
Ash stared back at her for a moment. It was quiet, but not as a library typically is.Â
Then, the young trainer erupted, âAH! Fine, if it gets my Gym battle started, Iâll read anything!â He marched up to the metaphorical plate and the literal bookshelf. He went to grab the book Lenora advised him, âThis one right?â
He tried to take it from its place, but to his shock moving the book caused the whole shelf to rumble. As Ash, Pikachu, Iris and Cilan gasped and Lenora and Hawes just looked on knowingly, the bookshelf moved itself back. Underneath it this whole time was a descending staircase.Â
Ash sputtered, âWh-whatâs down there?â
Lenora simply had a smug expression, âWhy, Ash, itâs the battlefield, of course.â
âTell me, dear,â Hawes said, âDonât you think this challenger is quite direct?â
âI sure do,â Lenora looked over to the trio, âIt's just as connoisseur boy was saying.â
Cilan held an awkward smile on his face, âUh, connoisseur boy?âÂ
âYou see, Iâve been studying you from when you first stepped foot into my Gym.â
Ash and Pikachu both titled their heads, âReally?â
Lenora turned to another shelf, tracing a hand over its collection of books, âYou see, when a recommend a challenger read up before our battle, nine times out of ten theyâll rush through a book that personally interests them, even though every time I show them the quickest way to their battle.â
Cilan raised an eyebrow, âBut, why do you do that?â
âSeeing a trainerâs thought process reveals quite a lot about them.â Lenora pulled out a book, âSome trainers will select a book about a topic they enjoy-â she returned it, before taking another- âwhile others pick thin books so they can read quickly. Very interesting, isnât it?â
Back on the shelf it went, before Lenora returned to the group, âI can generally tell how a challenger will behave going forward by how they react in this situation.â
Iris grabbed Ash by his shoulders, excitedly asking, âSo what kind of trainer do you think Ash is?â
Lenora smirked, holding herself high, âWhat you see is what youâll get. Ash rose aggressively at my challenge, and Iâm looking forward to seeing how that aggressiveness plays out on the battlefield.â
Hawes nodded, âAlthough, I do imagine our current challenger may be a bit tunnel visioned.â
Ash gave a faint awkward chuckle as Iris did the same, âLooks like theyâve got your number, Ash.â
After a second of Pikachu laughing at him, Ash shook his head, raising himself up, âFine then! Watch me all you want, Iâm still stoked!â âPika paka!â
âI like your spirit,â Lenora smiled. She went to the stairs with her husband right behind her, âLetâs go then.â
Ash and Pikachu grinned, before following her down with Iris and Cilan following him.Â
âSo here we are!â
The battlefieldâs lights flickered on as they entered. Besides the title sidelines, the floor was dedicated to the flat battlefield.Â
âWow!â âPika!â âAwesome!â
Ash ran to the battlegroundâs center cheerily. He spun around in place, giving them an eager look, âKay, letâs get going!â
âLetâs take a deep breath,â Lenora corrected. She walked up to join, âI meant what I said about studying up before our battle. Perhaps you should do a little research on what kind of Gym Leader I am?âÂ
âIâm so pleased to hear you say that connoisseur boy,â Lenora smiled, âThatâs the kind of battle I just love.â
She looked to her husband, âHawes, if you would please explain the rules?â
âOf course, dear,â he adjusted his glasses. He walked his way over to the opposite side of the battlefield, standing parallel to the middle as Iris returned to Cilanâs side.
Lenora nodded, and went to the left end of the battlefield as Ash ran to the opposing position.Â
âThe Nacrene City Gym battle is about to commence, challenger has the first move, and-â Hawes threw his arms out, â-battle begin!â
Lenora raised an arm, âLillipup, battle ready!â
âPup!â Lillipup hopped onto the field from beside Lenoraâs feet. They dropped to a crouching position, growling and barring its teeth, âLill!â
âYouâre wasting your time, Ash!â Lenora cut him off, âMean Look traps its opponent and prevents them from switching out. Itâs Pidove or nothing.â
âQuite the combination,â Cilanâs brows furrowed, âLenoraâs strategy seems to disrupt her challengerâs own plan, and force them to battle on the fly and on her own terms.â
Iris cringed slightly, âWell, Ash is good as thinking on his feet, right?â
Cilan hummed, âIn this instance, weâll have to see.â
Ash balled his hand into a fist.Â
âI was going to start off with Oshawott and finish off with Snivy and Attract, but now I canât use the combination I wanted,â Ash thought to himself. He stared at Lenora, who only reacted with a smirk.Â
He grinned, âAlright, Pidove, weâve still got this!âÂ
Pidove shook her head, shaking out her fear. She held a wing up, âPi Pidove!âÂ
âUse Gust!âÂ
Pidove flew up, flapping her wings to send the air attack down at Watchog.Â
âWatchog, evade!âÂ
âWatchog!â he jumped back, letting the Gust hit the ground. Pidove made quite a disappointed face.
âAlright then, get in close with Quick Attack!âÂ
âPidove!â she dove down in a white streak.Â
âWatchog, whip around!âÂ
Watchog dug their heel into the ground, before twisting around. Itâs stiff tail collided with Pidove as she tried to connect with Quick Attack. She cried out, the movement smacking her down to the ground.Â
âNow, use Low Kick!âÂ
âChog!â whipped around once again, its outstretched leg striking Pidove and knocking her on her side to the ground.Â
âLow Kick once more!âÂ
âUp in the air, Pidove!âÂ
Despite the damage from the previous attack, Pidove hoisted herself back into the air and out of Low Kickâs reach with a mighty flap of her wings.Â
Ash smiled, âGreat, now use Double Team!â
Pidove nodded, and with a coo she summoned three copies of herself, flying in perfect sync with her.Â
âGust, again and again!â Ash instructed.Â
âDove dove dove!â they, all in harmony, said with each flap of their wings, sending the attack to their grounded target.Â
Watchog had no idea which of the serval incoming attacks were simply an illusion or were the real deal. he leaped backwards once more, but with more Gusts still incoming he dodged from left to right on repeat. Eventually, a Gust hit Watchog, knocking him off pace and allowing the following Gusts to land and knock Watchog down.Â
âWatchog, get up!âÂ
âPidove, Quick Attack, hurry!âÂ
Watchog shoved himself back onto his feet, glaring as the four âPidoveâ went to attack with increasing speed.Â
Lenora threw an arm out, âWatchog, lights on!âÂ
âWatchog!â he nodded. Seconds before Pidove made contact, Watchogâs stripes erupted in harsh yellow light. The young trainers all covered their eyes at the blinding light as it overwhelmed the whole room. Lenora, however, did not flinch. The light blasted Pidove, destroying her Double Team clones and leaving her dazed and struggling to adjust her eyes as Watchogâs light faded as quickly as it came.Â
âThat light is from Watchogâs special ability, Illuminate,â Cilan said.
âSeems like that wouldâve been useful yesterday,â Iris said under her breath.
Ash gasped in panic, âPidove, you gotta get back!â
âWatchog, use Thunderbolt!â
âWatch-og!â Watchogâs body became coated in electricity, before firing it off at the still dazed Pidove. She cried out as her body quaked, the electricity coarsing over her before it threw her across the battlefield towards her trainer.Â
âAh! Pidove!â Ash gasped, eyes wide in horror.Â
Iris brought a hand to her face, âPoor Pidove, that looked like it hit hard.â
Cilan had a sympathetic tone, âQuite the unexpected move, the perfect match up to take out Pidove.â
Her subsequent landing kicked up dust, obscuring her. Everyone watched with baited breath as Lenora smirked. Â
It dissipated, Pidove was knocked out, swirls in her eyes.Â
Hawes threw a hand up, âPidove is unable to battle! The first match up goes to Lenora.â
âChog!â Watchog side stepped to the left, letting the water attack fly right past them. Watchog gave Oshawott a disgustingly smug expression, to which Oshawott responded with a repulsed look, his tongue sticking out.Â
âNow, Thunderbolt, Watchog!âÂ
Watchog quickly fired off the electric attack.Â
Ash grinned, âDeflect it with your scalchop!âÂ
âWott!â Oshawott nodded, holding out his shell out against Watchogâs Thunderbolt. It struck his scalchop, before jumping off and striking the ground, wasting Watchogâs efforts.Â
Ash gasped, âOshawott, you gotta get back up!âÂ
âOshaâŠâ he groaned, holding his head. Still, he shoved himself up, and went to grab his scalchop.Â
Which was not there.
âOsha?! Oshawott?!â Oshawott looked around the battlefield frantically. With the shine of the overhead lights, he saw it abandoned on the ground. With a gasp, Oshawott ran after the shell without abandon.Â
âOshawott, wait!â âPika pika!â the partners cried in vain.Â
âWatchog, Low Kick,â Lenora instructed.Â
âChog!âÂ
Watchog rushed over to stop him, sweeping his leg under Oshawottâs feet mid-run and knocking him on his face to the ground.Â
âOshawott, no!â Ash gasped.Â
âNow, Thunderbolt, letâs go!â Lenora held an arm forward.Â
âGet up, hurry!â Ash paled.Â
âOshaâŠâ Oshawott, eyes barley open, forced himself back up with a heavy breath. He strained his vision back up, just in time to see the close range Thunderbolt.Â
âOsh-!â Oshawottâs cry was cut off by being electrocuted. His body shook until the attack finished. Still, he stood, immobile.Â
Iris and Cilan looked on.Â
Hawes watched carefully.Â
Lenora raised an eyebrow.
âOshawottâŠ?â Ash asked.Â
âWottâŠâ he mumbled, before falling to the ground, swirls in his eyes.
Hawes raised an arm, âOshawott is unable to battle! The victor is Watchog and Lenora the Gym leader!âÂ
âIt seemed like the battle was going to start going Ashâs way with Oshawott,â Iris said.Â
âIâm not sure it was,â Cilan thought out loud.
âReally?â
He hummed, âLenora immediately identified how to remove Oshawottâs advantage. A close range battle was simply her way of luring Ash in.â
âThank you, Nurse Joy,â Ash nodded. He got up to meet Oshawott and Pidove, âWe might have lost today, but weâre going to get to training to beat Lenora! Promise.â
Oshawottâs and Pidoveâs eyes sparkled. They both responded in affirmation.
âAlright!â Ash grinned.Â
Cilan joined him, âOshawott and Pidove both have their own defensive tactics, but they canât keep up with Lenoraâs teamâs speed and strength. Improving that is your target to defeat her.â
Ash nodded, âYouâre right. Weâve got some work ahead of us.â
âOh, another Gym challenger?â Nurse Joy said, gaining the groupâs attention, âIf you want to do some training, then why donât you visit the Battle Club?â
âThe Battle Club? Isnât that just for battling other trainers?â Ash tilted his head.
âDon George is a battle specialist,â Iris said, âIf you want special training, heâs your ticket.â
âHeh, you look exactly like the other Don Georges do.â
Don George raised an eyebrow, âIf I were to take a guess, youâre here because Lenora gave you some trouble?â
âYeah!â Ashâs eyes widened, Iris and Cilan making their own expressions of interest behind him, âHowâd you know?â
He nodded, âYouâd hardly be the first trainer sent my way after losing to her. That tricky Roar and Mean Look combination of hers has sent many trainers stumbling.â
âSo her strategy is famous,â Cilan hummed.
Iris nodded, âBut if you can meet her power and raise your endurance, you could totally get past her.â
âThatâs right,â Don George said, âNow, young man, I believe I know exactly what you need.â
The manâs body stiffened, and his expression intensified and fire burst from his eyes, âSO GET READY! Youâve come to the right place for some proper training.â
âYeah-ha!â Ash joined him, âIâll do whatever it takes!â
âPika pikachu!â
Don George nodded, âVery well, though I warn you my brand of training is not for the faint of heart.â
Ash and Pikachu both nodded, âRight!â
âAlright, follow me through these doors,â he turned to stand in front of two large, metallic sliding doors. Giving a serious look at the young trainers, Don George stood as the doors lumbered open. The group strained their eyes against the blinding light that escaped from it.Â
