April 8th is an International Romani Day

The International Romani Day is a day to celebrate Romani culture and raise awareness of the issues facing Romani people. The day was officially declared in 1990 in Serock, Poland, the site of the fourth World Romani Congress of the International Romani Union.

Pictures above were taken in Tarnów, Poland where an annual festival called Roma Caravan Memorial is organized each July. All photos © Paweł Topolski, via tarnow.pl.

The America COMPETES Act is putting fish and reptiles at risk

Hello, friends! I’m returning from my hiatus to let people know about something very important. As of today, 2/4/2022, HR 4521 along with the COMPETES Act has been passed (mostly along party lines) through the House of Representatives and is making its way to the senate.

This matters to the fish, herp, bird, and invert communities for one big reason: there’s an amendment in Division H from the Committee of Natural Resources that modifies the Lacey Act. According to this amendment, all non-native species would be classified as injurious by default until later review. There would be an import ban on non-native fish, reptiles, amphibians, and the like unless they are reviewed by the Secretary of the Interior and found to not be an “imminent threat to human beings, to the interests of agriculture, horticulture, forestry, or to wildlife or the wildlife resources of the United States.” They must also be verifiably imported or transported between state lines in “more than minimal quantities” in a 1-year period before the COMPETES Act is passed. Those quantities have not been decided yet.

We’re talking a devastating blanket ban on any species that isn’t well-known and studied enough to be proven non-threatening.

Nothing I’ve read has changed me more than “you do people a favor by accepting their help” like I repeat this constantly to so many people because it’s true!!! People like to feel useful, they like to feel kind, they like to feel like they have an ability to impact people’s lives so just let them!! Not everything is a thing to be owed back — accept people’s kindness without making a competition out of it

Just thinking about this today like I was ringing up a woman at the store and she was a dollar short but somebody had tipped me (personally, not the whole staff) a couple bucks earlier and I was like here take one of these and she was so shocked I would do that and made a point to remember my name and thanked me so much over like. One dollar. And then later another customer asked to pay for another couple’s drinks and they were so surprised and trying to buy them something in return but clearly that person just wanted to do something nice and they ended up having a long conversation and laughed together and it would have been so awkward if they’d completely refused or tried to give them money back and it would have ruined the moment. It’s the easiest thing to just pay forward kindness but that also means you have to accept people’s kindness when it comes around to you.
