Hello, I’m Buck. I’m an adult diagnosed with D.I.D. I run this account hereby to simply educate and answer questions about being a system and my disorder. I welcome all and any questions. hey, what's your thoughts on non-traumagenic systems? (also, systems without DID/OSDD/DDNOS/etc?)
I personally don’t believe in non-traumagenic systems in terms of having DID/OSDD, as they are similar to C-PTSD, (and many other trauma disorder). Both disorders stem from trauma, you can have trauma without DID/OSDD, but you cannot have DID/OSDD without trauma in some form. However, I don’t have much of a thought on systems without DID/OSDD/ETC. I overall carry a lot of hope for the future of research behind DID/OSDD and systems. Something to give out more information that’s scientifically proven. The entire discourse with the DID/OSDD, especially on tumblr spaces can be quite whack in my opinion. /lh

Alter Roles
Host - Co-Host can also fit into this definition. These alters handle day to day life for the most part by fronting the most. These alters can also grow up being completely unaware to the system growing up. This however, doesn’t apply to every host but can due to the foremost fronting.
ANP - Short for apparently normal part. Almost if not all systems will have an apparently normal part. These are grounded and rational individual alters.
Protector - These alters handle protecting the system. Mostly from trauma but other situations can and do apply.
Trauma Holder - Alters who hold onto trauma are labeled as such. They handle often the memory of the trauma or emotions that come with dealing with said trauma mentioned.
Caregiver - This term is most popular with systems that have 1 littles. They are in charge of taking care of the littles and their needs. They also commonly help others in the system, especially the body.
Gatekeeper - Gatekeepers are in charge of managing switches, triggers. Another common thing gatekeepers control and or help take care of can include access to memories.
Helper - Those who assist in the helping managing the system. Similar to gatekeeper.
Introjects - Alters who split off and resemble a fictional character and or often times real people as well.
Middles - Child alters. Except, this can fall under only 12-17. Age range may vary from system but it used to describe tween to teenage alters rather than tiny children. 1 Littles - Like Middles, Littles are a term to describe child alters. This however only includes babies, toddlers, and kids. E.G. 1-11 year olds. Again, age range may vary by system and doesn’t apply to everyone but that’s the typical standard.
Persecutor - An alter that typically harm the body. This can be siding with an abuser, negative. These alters can also commonly be introjects of an abuser. They typically have protective or protective induced logical behind their actions. They not to be demonized and are fully capable of healing, their actions however are not to be blatantly excused. Non-human Alters - These alters are - as self explainable - non-human. They can present as an animal, religious figure such as an angel or demon, or even a ghost or spirit. They are however not limited to these.
Sexual Alters - Alters that are formed to handle sexual abuse, trauma, so on. Do not guess their toleration to sexual acts because it varies between systems and alters. Just because they split off to handle sexual trauma does not mean they are comfortable with it.
System Terms
General Terming ──────────── Alter - An alternate state of identity or consciousness as a result of trauma.
Splitting - A term in which to describe the forming of a new alter.
Fronting - The state of which alternative identity is aware of the outside world and is in control. It’s also very possible to have one or more alters fronting at a time.
Switching - Switching refers to when there is a switch in alternative states. Rapid switching is what it’s called when multiple switches occur in a small time frame. It can be stressful and disorienting.
Co-Conscious - Also known as co-con is where an alter who is not fronting is aware of the outside world. Headspace - Also known as the inner world is a place in the mind where alters exist when they are not fronting. Not all systems have a headspace and there’s nothing wrong with not having one.
Dormancy - Is the situation in which an alter is unavailable for whatever reasons. This means they cannot be triggered out or so on. It can days to even years and is typically a result of a new trauma and is a way of coping.
Fusion - Where two or more alters and or fragments that form one. While it can be a permanent and or on-purpose change. They may split at anytime again, especially if there’s a new trauma or there’s a large amount of stress.
Integration - A term that can be coined for inference of a system accepting and building mentally on their trauma. It can be described for the healing process. Final Fusion - The idea that all alters and or fragments with all form into one, singular alter. Though, not a singlet because the system can easily split again if stressful circumstances are brought to them. This is not ideal for many systems.
Positive Triggers - This is a trigger than is usually unrelated to trauma and is associated with an alter positively. Negative Triggers - These triggers are typically correlated to trauma. It can induce flashbacks, or other trauma responses. These are best to avoided. Although, you shouldn’t try to trigger out an alter unless absolutely needed. Somebody made a really good point below in the notes, so I think it’d be great to include that. “Positive and negative triggers can both be related to trauma, positive triggers are something that generally draws a part/alter forward/near the front, and negative triggers are things that push a part away from the front. For example, if a part was created due to medical trauma, getting a shot may be a positive trigger even though it's unpleasant. TBH both should generally be handled with caution “

What is D.I.D, it’s history, and what’s a system?
D.I.D - previously called “multiple personality disorder” until 1994; is a mental disorder that forms after repeated and severe trauma under the age of 6-9. It may not form after. The brain manifests dissociative barriers that are amnesiac as a way to cope with this childhood trauma. The moments between these amnesic are listed as alters; as they are alternative states of being. They grow into distinctive states of personality and may develop their own name, pronouns, and other details such as age. What’s the history on D.I.D? - The first documented case can be led back to 1584. Being 1584 it would not be taken into consideration for mental illness. Instead, a woman named Jeanne Fery recorded her exorcism in meticulous elements. Recorded details of her exorcism exist to this day. The alters presented greatly resemble what could now be considered a little and persecutor in terms of labels. Shortly after Jeanne Fery, a woman named Sister Benedetta was noted to be possessed by “three angelic boys” whom of which would beat her to chronic pain.These three boys could be described to have used different tones and facial expressions when “possessing” Sister Benedetta. At age 9, one those angels at “froze”. This happened to be the same age her father had passes - whom of which was rumored to be possessed as well. As her symptoms had gotten worse, she was eventually sent to a convent. The first person to ever be diagnosed with multiple personality disorder was Louis Auguste Vive in 1882. Louis often had episodes of hysteria and could be seen through an incident when he was 17. It lasted 50 hours after being bitten by a snake. As for the psychical who had been treating him for the past month - he couldn’t recognize. His moral character and even simple acts of appetite seemed to be infrequent. When Louis was first hospitalized, the physicians only took into account 2 discovered alters, although displaying at least 3. He later had another attack in 1884 that led him to attempt at stealing like he had when he was younger to survive. In 1888 he was recorded to have at least 10 different states of identity. They all presented with different characteristics and separate somatic symptoms. Just later in 1886, Bourneville revision-ed a book about Jeanne Fery; calling her a perfect example and candidate for 1“dédoublement de la personnalité.” There is a long, long history of professionals trying to diagnose DID as another prominent disorder depending on the time period. The DSM was placed under a subgroup of Psychoneuroses and Neuroses which included alternative states of identity; placing DID under the label of hysteria once again. Later in 1910 the term Schizophrenia had been introduce by Bleuler. Increase for Schizophrenia diagnoses rather than MPD diagnosed had skyrocketed. Why? One of the first description for Schizophrenia included having multiple identities. It was officially recognized because Schizophrenia was a more popular diagnosis.Wasn’t ‘till 1932 or 1949 that dissociation and the splitting of identity was linked to child abuse explicitly because of “Confusion of Tongues”, papers written by Ferenczi. Theories surrounding the subconscious wasn’t popular by any means, so unfortunately nobody listened to what Ferenczi had to say. - Schizophrenia was still the most prevalent diagnosis and greatly dominated over the diagnosis of DID. It wasn’t until shell shock; now noted as post traumatic stress disorder - that could be noted in soldier’s, women, and children -- that dissociation was even given attention again. (This is already lengthy,, so I might post a pt2 talking about people like Sybill.) What’s a system? - A system is a group of 2 alters 1 dédoublement de la personnalité - the splitting of personality, split personality 2 An alternative being of identity of sub(consciousness) created during trauma or experience where the brain becomes overwhelmed. They’re created to hold, cope, and or handle trauma; to protect the body. Alters form in order to help the body continue with normal life and differentiate from trauma on a daily basis and in normal, real life situation as to allow the body to function.
