I feel like if people would look past the red white and blue of Steve they’d see how much stuff we can do with him as a fandom (fuck the Mcu they ruined my baby) like how he can be a interpretation of so many things with not being in his own century. Not knowing social procedures, and having a hard time, making conversation with people in this new century that he doesn’t know how to live in, having a strong sense of right and wrong and is not afraid to speak up about what he believes in, even though it could lead to arguments within his friend group, Yeah he’s neurodivergent. oh a big strong man shows up in a new place and he doesn’t talk about his past, but what we do know is that he was small and wasn’t respected in his old life, oh wait he’s trans!
He’s also a perfect mix of repression, trauma, angst and hyper competency. He’s really the character of all time to me. A queer man who grew up in an INCREDIBLY repressive time who suddenly gets transported to a place where gay people can get married. But in doing so he loses his community, his family, his friends, his home and his lover, thereby rendering what should be something joyful into another tragedy. He is a soldier and captain in one of the worst wars in modern history, leads his troops to victory over and over and over, is the best tactician ever, and yet is reduced to a dancing monkey in the minds of the public. A poor and disabled kid who disappears into the shadows suddenly forced into the spotlight. He gets to serve but not in the way he wanted. He gets his lover back, but he wants to kill Steve now and has been tortured and forced to work for the enemy. Then his lover leaves. Again.
He never gets an unalloyed good. Ever. His life is a series of unimaginable tragedies that would break lesser men a hundred times over.
Contrary to popular belief the biggest beginner's roadblock to art isn't even technical skill it's frustration tolerance, especially in the age of social media. It hurts and the frustration is endless but you must build the frustration tolerance equivalent to a roach's capacity to survive a nuclear explosion. That's how you build on the technical skill. Throw that "won't even start because I'm afraid it won't be perfect" shit out the window. Just do it. Just start. Good luck.

the only sound in the room between you and jason was the soft chatter on the television and the music coming out of your phone. he was sat in his reading glasses, reading something you’re pretty sure was one of your assigned readings that you hadn’t done. your legs were sprawled over his lap, his hands occasionally rubbing circles at your ankle between page flips.
it was sweet the kind of soft existence you had with him, sharing the space and not having to talk at every point.
you’re so engulfed in your phone that when you get a text from tim, you respond immediately. he sends a tiktok video.
“seeing if my boyfriend will melt into my kiss.”
kon failed immediately.
you laugh to yourself and earn a side glance from jason. regardless you respond to tim.
no one is surprised timmy.
20$ says jason would never.
you turn your head to look at jason, fingers idle between pages and knees facing towards you. peaceful. you smile to yourself and text tim back.
50$ says he would fold immediately.
u r on. easiest 50$ i’ve ever made. run me my money.
you roll your eyes and open the camera app, setting up your phone on the corner of the couch. with purpose you turn to jason, unable to control the smile growing on your face.
“uh oh,” he says without looking up, “you need something baby?”
you grin wider, knowing you’re gonna win.
“can i try something on you please?”
he exhales through his nose, shutting his book and setting it on the table. taking off his glasses and putting them on top, “okay. what?”
“stand up.” he follows you up like he were leashed.
jason scratches the back of his neck while you circle the table to stand in front of him. the apples of his cheeks pinken just enough for you to notice at this proximity and you smile sweetly. you raise your hands above your head.
“do this and just hold them there.”
he frowns and does it, willing to do whatever you ask, even if he were confused. he raises his hands above his head, “now what?”
you don’t give him a chance to respond, creeping closer to the bulky man in front of you. stepping into his space like you belonged there. tilting your chin upwards to look up at his tall stature. you don’t touch him with your hands yet and wait to see what he does.
his adam’s apple bobs and he wets his lips in anticipation, but you enjoy the way he reacts, giving himself away because he always aches for just for you.
you know your man.
he’s already leaning into it before you press your lips into his, deepening it trying to crawl into you.
then your hands come behind his head to cradle him closer, fingers snaking up his nape and gently tugging on the strands. jason folds. his hands go down before you know it, cupping your ass and lifting you up. you gasp into his mouth at the sudden movement and he swallows that too, sloppily slipping his tongue past your lips. he’s already moving you backwards.
your back hits the couch and he’s over you, pressing wet kisses over your jaw while you giggle when he makes his way down. he’s unzipping your sweater and smiling against your neck, mumbling something about needing you. you’d almost forgot about the bet until the sound of something clattering onto the floor makes him lift his head. you look with him—it’s your phone and it’s still recording.
“babe,” he starts and you shut your eyes.
“mmhm?”
“why is your phone recording us?”
“because…”
a moment hangs between you while he blinks down at you trying to hide from him with your closed eyelids. he puts a thumb on your brow and opens one of your eyes like you were a doll.
“because?”
you sigh, “it’s a trend to see if your boyfriend will melt into your kiss. tim said you wouldn’t so i had to prove him wrong.”
he stares at you, arms still on either side while you lay flat on the couch, “you kissed me for a stupid trend.”
shaking you head, “no, i kissed you for fifty.”
he raises his brows, “he’s paying you for this?”
“well, technically, it was twenty bucks but i got him up to fifty.”
then he barks out a laugh and brushes your hair from your face. he leans down and kisses the tip of your nose. he picks up your phone and stops the recording just to toss it next to you, plopping his full weight entirely over you again while you oof at the sudden but comforting feeling.
he’s humming into your ear and burying his face in the crook of your neck.
“you should extort my replacement more often.”

taylor swift wrote coney island ft. the national about steve rogers and bucky barnes. in this essay I will...
due to popular demand (i haven't even posted it yet) here is the essay:
"in for the long haul" is literally just a way of saying. like. 'until the end of the line.'
to me this means, 'you said until the end of the line (meaning, loosely, til death do us part), we aren't dead yet, so why are you leaving?'. this would refer to Steve leaving in endgame.
this lyric strikes me as a huge indicator of it being about stucky.
mainly because the place that makes up the title of the song (Coney Island) and the message of the song (reminiscing about past, untouchable, long-gone memories of going to the arcade or the fair) are both literally stucky canon. I don't know who Taylor could be writing about as although she could have obviously gone to Coney Island previously, or simply gone to brood alone, or even just used the fair as a metaphor for good times, it is SO SPECIFIC.
in my opinion, too specific not to be tailor-made (haha see what I did there) for captain america and the winter soldier
speaking of the winter soldier.....
the main themes in stucky's narrative, romantic or not, are loyalty, hope, and most commonly seen throughout their arcs, loss. both of them at some point in the narrative lose each other— the first not even being Bucky falling from the train, or even his first HYDRA kidnapping, but when he went to the frontlines and left Steve in Brooklyn. they've lost each other so many times that when Steve finally chooses to leave at the end of it all, it feels almost like they should've expected it. or, "over and over, lost again with no surprises."
(more of the times losing each other include: Bucky losing the smaller Steve after the serum, Steve losing 40s Bucky to HYDRA twice, Bucky losing and regaining Steve over and over and over again in his jumbled and erased memories, Steve losing Bucky in the blip, and finally, Bucky losing Steve to his past)
this stanza so perfectly represents that and might also be a nod to 'winter' as a season with a "colder and colder" OR a nod to Steve's time in the ice. maybe both!
this bit in the song, I've noticed, is partly sung first by the National, then by Taylor. I found this really interesting because to me the lyrics could be about either Bucky or Steve.
about Bucky: a lifetime of achievement being his life up until his 20s, arguably not a lot of time, but certainly enough to feel solidified in parts of your identity as someone who takes care of Steve Rogers. it then changes drastically to when years have passed and he's still in his 20s, except now he's worried that Steve has always wanted to abandon Post-Hydra Bucky but stayed out of obligation.
about Steve: a lifetime of achievement as 'not a perfect soldier, but a good man.' and 'I can do this all day' and even 'each one you buy is a bullet in the barrel of your best man's gun'. you get the gist. but the second lyric being about Pre-Serum Steve and how Bucky shouldn't have stuck around for him.
they make me real sad guys.

this part is also very similar to the stanza that mentions coney island— all these things are extremely situation-specific to stucky yet in an outside context still sounds vague enough to be Taylor's own experiences.

"sorry for not winning you an arcade ring" because they were childhood best friends
