Elie Wiesel
āNightā was published in 1960. I think a lot of people donāt understand how hard it was for people to talk about the Holocaust because now weāre inundated with Holocaust narratives in everything from Hollywood movies to childrenās books and video games. But the cultural trauma and the collective silence surrounding the Holocaust was very, very real. My dad was born in the Bronx in the 50s and he remembers the weird status of the Shoah: everyone had been touched by it but no one really felt like they āownedā it. People whispered about it but no one talked about it. You would sometimes walk into a shop or laundromat and everyone working there had a number tattoo.
Wiesel was sneered at by a certain type of academic for being a conventional writer and by portions of the left for being a Zionist. In either case, we were to understand that he was a ābadā survivor unlike the āinterestingā survivors who wrote more avant-garde prose (Paul Celan, etc) or the ārighteousā survivors who did not advocate for the state of Israel. We were to understand that Wiesel was ābadā because he paved the way for insipid Holocaust romances like Schindlerās List and contributed to a general cultural sense that Jews were aggrieved victims (which likeā¦..they were).
Itās true that Wiesel believed he was a victim, that he was willing to tell and retell the story of what happened to him, and that he understood āNever againā not only as a generic slogan of humanitarian goodwill but as a promise to the Jewish people. I think that was extremely important for Jews like my grandfather, who fled Europe, to hear, although it may be hard for us to have the historical perspective to understand why that is. Itās also hard to imagine that weād have the language and reference points to talk about genocides in Rwanda, Bosnia, etc, without his work and the work of other survivors.
Anyway, rest in piece, Elie. Your memory will be a blessing.
Analyzing all known Metal lyrics with natural language processing
Iain (āan ex-physicist currently working as a data scientistā) scraped Dark Lyrics and built a dataset of lyrics to 222,623 songs by 7,364 metal bands, then used traditional natural language processing techniques to analyze them.
Iainās post is a good tour through the natural language processorās toolkit ā Bag of Words Bayesian filtering, log-likelihood ratio, term frequency -Inverse document frequency, cosine distance, etc. The output of the analysis is sometimes fun and interesting, but the value here is mostly as a good primer on how the different techniques work and when you might use them.

401
You got somewhere to be?
Too bad youāre not getting there.
The 401 is where they weed out the weak. You donāt drive on the 401 to get somewhere. You do it for theĀ challenge. You do it toĀ test your abilities like some Uchiha clan shit. Rush hour 401 is the breaking point between heaven and earth. Are you going to descend into a Lovecraftian hell or reach Nirvana? You will double the size of your biceps death-gripping your steering wheel. There is no time for rest or pulling off over into an exit. Bodily functions shut down. Cars on the side of the road and crashes closing lanes are a constant reminder that you are driving the razorās edge. Death is mere seconds away atĀ any given moment. Theyāre always doing construction but nothing is ever finished. Itās a constant roadblock for the hell of it.Ā This is the Dark Souls 2 of Canadian driving. git good orĀ get out
And thatās just normal mode. Have fun in the six-month long Ontario winter and enter some top-tier level of highway driving.
EVO2015. EVO2018.
I heard that babies are born on the 401, grow up on the 401, and take over for their parents as driver of the family car on the 401
What the fuck.
I live right by the 401 i never knew it was so weird i just thought all highways were like that

Conservative Rabbis pass resolution supporting trans rights
The Rabbinical Assembly, made up of 1,700 rabbis, stated that all those who identify as transgender will be identified with the name, gender and pronoun of their choosing, and those will be used when they are called to recite the Torah and the denomination will implement full recognition and accommodation for transgender people within the religious institution.Ā Three Christian denominations have also spoken out in support of trans rights.

How to buy secret cookies baked by cloistered Spanish nuns #1yrago
When we heard about the semi-secret cookies baked by secluded nuns in Madrid, Spain, naturally we had to seek out these mythical treats. Hereās what we found.
Thereās a legend about cookies that you can hear spoken of in hushed tones on the streets of Madrid. These arenāt your normal store-bought cookies. No, these highly sought-after treats are baked from ancient recipes dating back to the time of the Romans (so they say), and theyāre made exclusively by nuns who avoid being seen by the general public. This last fact makes them somewhat difficult to track down. But since we love a good challenge (and good cookies), we couldnāt resist undertaking the search to find out how to score some of these secret cookies baked by cloistered Spanish nuns.
It all started during a Sandemanās New Madrid free walking tour. Early on in the tour, our guide, Naomi (who was quite excellent), stopped at a narrow street near BotĆn (the oldest restaurant in the world, dating back to 1725) and told us that just down this very road, one could buy cookies from nuns who remained hidden safely behind the walls of a Spanish monastery. There was a collective gasp from our fellow attendees as we all realized she was talking about the nun cookies. We quickly logged the latitude and longitude so we could find this starting point again and continued on our tour.

27 correspondences out of 48 (without diacritics) or roughly 80 Kana (including diacritics and broken syllables etc.) is not really proving anything. It is methodologically unsound (and unhelpful) to mix Katakana and Hiragana in this compilation, because that only cuts the percentage of correspondences in half (27 out of 160).Ā
There is no systematic correspondence, neither with consonants nor with syllables. Why are some syllablesĀ āvocalizedā with /a/, others with /u/ others with /o/, why are someĀ āderivedā from plain consonant letters and others from consonant letters with vocalic marks? Is there any even remotely consistent system to it?Ā
Also like half of thoseĀ āHebrewā letters are either straight up wrong or are only right in cursive, not block, and Iām pretty sure Hebrew cursive developed in like the 7th-8th centuries.Ā
I remember being teased relentlessly throughout my childhood and my teenage life where people would say that because of my skin Iāll never be beautiful enough, they would even recommend skin bleaching products. So as a child I quickly realised that as a dark skinned girl I was not considered beautiful enough⦠At that time I didnāt know that it was the negativity from the people around me that was causing me to hate my skin and myself for that matter. I remember a time during school photos where a girl shouted āsheās too dark! You wonāt see anything on her ID but her teeth!ā, of course everyone laughed it out⦠And so did Iā¦. Because I didnāt want to make it seem like I was offended⦠Their feelings felt more important than mine⦠After all growing up I was always reminded of how unlikely I was of ever being beautiful or finding someone that found my darkness beautifulā¦.. As a 19 year old today I sit here and say āI never gave in to skin bleachingā, āI was constantly reminded of how ugly I was but that only made me love myself even moreā¦.. I began considering myself as someone different, someone beautiful and out of the ordinary.ā Your skin no matter how dark it is that when you smile you can only see the glow of your teeth is worthy of love, your skin is that of a goddess and you should never feel anything about your skin but self love. I write this to all of the people that have gone through similar and worse, you donāt need to learn to Love your skin, the love is already there⦠You just gotta unleash it.
I would like to hear some stories of yours if youāve ever gone through the same thingā¦. Message me on Instagram. IG: YoungNubiie
I was playing some nice melodious melodies on my flute and I see this out of the corner of my eye. I laughed so hard I cried. Sousaphone-sloth.
