AVOID MSG AT ALL COSTS (Natural Flavors)
hi friends... just a quick PSA on MSG (monosodium glutamate) and why it’s worth avoiding: some studies link high and frequent intake to potential issues with the brain, hormones, and metabolism over time, and it often hides in ultra-processed foods under names like “natural flavors,” “yeast extract,” and other flavor enhancers in chips, instant noodles, canned soups, frozen meals, and seasoning mixes. Please take a minute to check out this article and its super helpful list of what MSG can do in the body and the many ingredient names it goes by, and feel free to share with anyone trying to be more intentional about what they eat.

How to overcome MSG induced toxicity
The reason I chose this picture, is because I think through out American history; we have had a lot of issues in regards to the ethical practices of food production. This image is of the nutritional facts and ingredients of Coca-Cola, and the part I wanted to focus on was the ingredients, “natural flavors.” Upon doing some of my own research, “natural flavors” isn’t as straight forward and upfront as we really want to think. In an article from CNN, Senior Scientist David Andrews of the Environmental Working Group reports that “natural and artificial flavors” are actually quite similar. The differences between them are quite small. The biggest difference is that natural flavors come form a natural source, but if you take orange juice for an example; the natural flavors most likely isn’t actually “orange juice.” That it’s a part of the product, that’s been modified chemically and added to the food or product, in order to keep consistent flavor for all of the products. The other big issue with the “natural flavor” phrase is they don’t tell you how many “flavors” it really is. Also according to Andrews, it could be around 50 to 100 ingredients. The problem I see with this, and people already voice their concerns or opinions on this. Is that writing “natural flavors” is a legal, but sneaky way of hiding the addition of ingredients. It can trick unsuspecting people, and can be very damaging for people’s bodies. Not all allergen containing products are label. For example, if someone who has food allergies were to eating something that was “natural flavored” by something that is deadly to them, such as Gluten. So in regards to the lack of transparency in the meaning of label phrases, this practice is completely unethical. Picture source: http://nancyappleton.com/

Food in Season: JANUARY
Happy new year everyone. Let's stay conscious and committed and support your local farmers market!
Also- have you seen the updated food pyramid!? Cheers for progress!

I'm vegan for the animals, but every time I see news articles about climate change, I also remember how if you suggest even eating less animal products people freak out as if you'd suggested eating their own pets. And then I feel kinda...angry and disappointed. Even if you don't care about animals (and you should), the time to start cutting back is now.
To add to this...I say cutting back because I get that people often find the idea of veganism daunting. But we need to be making mass societal changes, so start however small you need, but start. Some ideas!:
"I'd go vegan but I'd miss bacon/cheese/regular chocolate" then do that. Eat cheese but skip the meat and eggs. Eat bacon but skip other types of meat. Eat mostly vegan but eat chocolate.
"I worry about protein" then experiment with vegan proteins to find some you enjoy. Swap chicken for seitan. Egg scramble can be tofu scramble. Pulses. Try it on a meatless Monday or something. (Also your average person does not need huge amounts of protein and it's in basically everything. Take a look at the stuff you already consume and add it up, you may be surprised.)
"It costs too much" listen look at the cost of meat then go look at the cost of beans, ok? In all seriousness unless you eat a lot of faux meats (which tbf some are pretty good) it probably won't be as bad as you think.
"Social gatherings are hard" don't eat vegan at social gatherings then, it's chill.
"I don't like fruit and vegetables" ok sorry unless you have a medical condition you may just need to work on this. Hide them in sauces or something. Try a variety. Idk. Fruit and veg is important.
Pick one day out of the week to eat whole food plant based and you will feel the difference

This video describes how the liver processes carbohydrates and highlights the importance of reducing excess carbs, rather than fats, for better health.
