A Murakami Haul on The Book Castle
An Exceptional Recluse
Hatake Kakashi wasn’t an exceptionally lazy person per se, he simply chose not to fret over thing most others would.
Such as the pile of unmarked papers on his desk, or the multitudes of emails flooding his folder. Both consisted of nuances of academic whining which, in light of their..increasingly scholarly discussions in class, was quite a surprise.
Naturally said discussions were often lost in the margins of his preferred book of the week.
Which more or less usually ended with the other things he couldn’t be bothered with. Perhaps it was an after-effect of becoming accustomed to this particular here-and-now.
..Or maybe he was slacking off more than he was usually prone to otherwise. Cue a timely glance at the desktop screen that blinked with the arrival of another email, before swiveling to the clock hanging on the other side of the University’s teachers lounge.
1500 and counting. Professors and of the like were usually around campus for far longer, especially if they had reports to submit.

BOOK OF THE DAY:
1Q84 by Haruki Murakami
“Bewitching and extraordinarily unsettling … Part noir crime drama, part love story, and part hallucinatory riff on 1984 … Murakami paces a story as well as any writer alive. He knows how to tell a love story without getting cute. He understands how to blend realism and fantasy (magical realism if you want to get all literary about it) in just the right proportions.” -Malcolm Jones, Newsweek
Welcome to the strange, odd, metaphysical and love hungry world of a Murakami novel. Set in 1984, Tokyo, Aomame, a young woman follows a taxi driver’s peculiar suggestion, which leads her in a parallel existence, which she calls 1Q84 - Q represents a question mark. A mysterious world, which she is ardently curious about. While Tengo’s new ghostwriting project has consumed his existence, things become hazy when Aomame’s and Tengo’s narrative meets. As the only people aware that they have penetrated another dimension, Aomame and Tengo realize they can only find each other by entering the surreal dimension of 1Q84.
Part romance, mystery and fantasy novel, Murakami has embedded the essence of Japanese culture in over 900 pages. As his most ambitious novel, 1Q84 threads all the dimensions of Murakami’s novel, plus other chimerical qualities.
If you are already a Murakami fan, 1Q84 will instantly enter your top three. If you are a new Murakami reader, you will find a Murakami novel to become your new addiction. It’s almost too easy to get lost in Murakami’s prose.

@oharanscholar:
The conversation was only interesting because he had mentioned the words ‘a world’. She furrowed a brow in thought, quietly flicking the pages of her own book, before lifting her glasses to take a proper look at him.
He was dressed differently to all the patrons in this establishment. A set of gloves adorned his fingers, one of his eyes was covered with a strange bandanna… but it was the mask over his face that was the strangest.
“That’s an interesting book,” she commented as her eyes raked over the characters. “Is that from the same author?”
Whilst she was not usually so chatty, Robin didn’t have her powers of observation to rely on. Any information she could glean about this world would require a lot more digging.
His visible eye blinked before wandering over to the woman in question. True, it hadn’t been that much of a while since he’d arrived in Pandora’s reality, though his inner shinobi would always be wary of people.
Especially since those who had been perceived as ‘dead’ at one point were apparently still alive - not that she seemed to fit that particular description.
What had Minato sensei mentioned once? Temporally defunct dimensional reality?
“Why yes, yes it is.” He replied, lowering the book a fraction so she could get a clearer view of the kanji, “Though who might you be?”
“I always liked books more than whatever was out there.”
In a sense, I’m the one who ruined me: I did it myself.

In lifting her head, lashes pull apart. Giving the man across from her a curious look, “we do.” A quick bite of her bottom lip before her expression brightens. “Though technically we’ve not spoke much beyond a mission or two.” Come to think of it, Hinata’s never had a conversation with him one on one before. To her, Kakashi was Naruto and Sakura’s Sensei. A possible friend of her own Sensei, having seen the two walking together around the village, in passing.
To ease the moment, “Hinata, Hyuuga Hinata.”
How long has it been? --The man before her didn’t seem as old as he had once upon a time. Or maybe it was the change of wear? or the experiences she’s had during this last gap of.. time.
“I apologize..” Hinata adds with a soft blush, she was on the clock after all. “Is there anything I can get for you?”
Hyuuga Hinata - true, there was no mistaking it, though Kakashi remembered the Hyuuga heiress to be..younger and somewhat withdrawn amidst the perpetual air of a rookie Genin who hadn’t seen the nuances of a battlefield.
Which was in most cases, to be blatant. Despite having spent a while in a different reality, Kakashi could never forget the feel of cold, sharpened metal between his fingers. His present profession as a professor of history and contemporary literature was simply ironic in that aspect.
“Ah, no need.” He replied with a dismissive wave of his hand as mismatched hues lazily eyed pale counterparts in silent contemplation.
Nope, definitely not the fumbling Genin he remembered, though seeing as she was now was somewhat..refreshing. She seemed to have matured, and as a sensei he could only hope that Naruto and Sakura had too.
Somewhere, somehow - some time?
“Though..something involving caffeine would be nice.” He mused, the book on the barstool conveniently forgotten as he nonchalantly sat on the one next to it, “Coffee without any cream or sugar, to be exact.”
He would probably be here a while - though as long as she wouldn’t mind a conversation, he would have no qualms.
It was nice; seeing someone - or a variant of someone - from his own reality.
@horoprincess:
“Huh?”
“What the Hell are you talking about? I just saw him yesterday.” Did something happen to that bugger while she was away? She swore, if she had to take up babysitting him too, Shisui was never going to hear the end of it.
She already had her fill of babysitting for two whole years, thank you very much.
“The name’s Perona, and that’s because I didn’t share it with you.”
She narrowed her eyes at him. What was it with people giving that weird look from time to time?
“But on that subject- who are you?”
Yesterday..ka? Funny how he remembered being present when news of the Uchiha’s demise had reached ANBU headquarters, though since this reality was naturally a lot different than his own..
It was..plausible, maybe. Either that or someone had caught him in a very interesting genjutsu.
“Maa, fair enough.” He replied in a nonchalant tone, visible eye already at half mast as she continued, “Hm? Ah, Kakashi.”
He’d play along. For now.
“So I take it you’re a friend of Shisui’s?” Cue timely pause as the Jonin (or..once Jonin. Honestly, he wouldn’t be terribly upset by it) eyed the girl with mild curiosity.
A long overdue follow up to this that I drew thanks to serenitytouched

It was rather scandalous, the things women discussed when they got together. Hinata had no idea that this type of conversation happened outside of the house. It was also scary to know how detailed and personal some were, and while in such a public setting too!
The desire to turn the cafe music up was strong, but there was a rule against it due to complains in the past. The heiress sighs while reaching for her cup of coffee. A long slow sip just as her attention turns towards the ringing bell above the door. Swallowing thick at the view of a very familiar man.
‘Ka..kashi..??’ she inwardly notes. He looked so different.. but the same somehow.
He’s here too now?!??
Pushing off her stool and towards the front counter, never taking her eyes off him. Even when he became the topic between the group of nosy females.
A smile tugs at her lips, “I hope you’ve arrived well, Kakashi Sensei.” Lids drop as the Hyuuga bows her head.
ARMAND GAUTIER WAS suffering from airsickness. He had a deep - seated fear of flying that stemmed from an excessive love of himself and his life and that, combined with the turbulence usually found off the coast of Greece in summer, had made him violently nauseous.
He was a tall, ascetically thin man with scholarly features, a high forehead and a perpetually sardonic mo--
He had read something like this once before, he could feel it tugging at the seams of his subconscious with every passing word.
Sydney Shelmon was it? Kami, nothing could fill the void left behind by Jiraiya sama’s genius. Flipping the book shut, he pushed open the door with a clothed shoulder and stepped inside, breathing in the wonderful aroma of caffeine among other baked goods.
The once-Jonin had gotten used to this realm somewhat, odd enough as it was. A part of him would still crave the occasional nuance of a familiar face or two - not that he hadn’t seen a few per se, such as the annoyingly recognizable pseudo-Uchiha he had almost encountered at the University the other day.
Almost. Letting the book cling to pallid digits by his side, Kakashi paused in front of the front counter, mismatched hues taken slightly aback at the greeting before promptly widening a fraction.
--Dark hair, the unmistakably demure aura of the only Hyuga he knew capable of it, along with the honorific--
...
It couldn’t be. Placing the book on one of the barstools lined in front of the counter, the elder speculatively tapped his clothed chin, “Maa, correct me if I’m wrong, but we know each other from before, don’t we?”
Hinata?
