Something that interests me so much about the Hunger Games in a meta manner is the arenas, particularly those of the Quarter Quells. Because, of course, the arena is different every year to make it interesting but it’s also carefully adapted for the Quarter Quells. For example, during the 2nd QQ, there are twice the normal quantity of tributes and so the arena is deadlier than normal. It’s been a while since my last reread but iirc everything ‘edible’ in the arena is poisonous as well as all the animals being deadly. Because they want the games to last a certain length of time and they don’t want them to drag on too long. Some are just canon fodder. And because these guys are probably more worried about the fact they’ve got 47 other competitors, they aren’t thinking about the terrain as much as they should.
When the games are filled with 24 killers, 24 survivors, 24 people who have played the games and know how they work, the arena is deadly. But not in the same way as before. Because these guys aren’t as naive as the 48 in the 2nd QQ. They don’t trust the Capitol or the arena. So instead, the game is a different kind of deadly. There’s no way for anyone to rest properly, they all have to keep moving. The sleep deprivation in theory making it easier to make mistakes and also making it absolutely necessary for people to team up, because of course it’ll be so fun to then inevitably watch the teams break down.
Idk I wish we had gotten more books for previous tributes or short stories but I’m particularly interested by the arenas and QQs in a very macabre manner. I mean the first one too, voting for tributes is just such a horrifying concept.
