Comparing the way Sasha and Shane kiss really is enlightening about Ilya's changing preferences,,, because Ilya's kiss with Sasha was hot, like there is no denying that - but that's the point. Sasha kissed Ilya and playfully tugged on his bottom lip because he was trying to be hot; he was trying to tempt Ilya. It was calculated, intentional, practiced. And that intentionality gives the entire thing an almost performative air,,, artificial.

Then compare this to ANY of Shane's kisses,,, Shane is earnest in everything he does, and that extends to how he kisses Ilya. It is pure desperation every time. He is CLINGING to Ilya at some points, devouring his face. This is not a calculated tease, nor a sensual prelude. This is Shane going If Your Tongue Is Not In My Mouth In The Next Five Seconds I Will Die. Shane's desire is so desperately obvious it's like a raw open wound. retired mlh star ilya rozanov gets bored and lonely and sometimes has an itch a hookup can't scratch, so he buys a large plot of land in the middle of nowhere canada and every now and then he pays someone to let him hunt them through the wilderness. what this looks like changes over time and varies person to person: sometimes there are knives, sometimes a gun; sometimes it lasts a week, sometimes an afternoon. one day he's in town, a few days before his next hunt, getting supplies, when he meets his neighbour shane hollander. he'd heard about shane, the kid who was meant to be just as good as him before a career ending injury took him out before their rookie year. he asks about what ilya's stocking up for, and ilya says he's going hunting, and shane asks what for. and in a moment of insanity, ilya thinks fuck it, and says he hasn't met him yet. things lock into place when shane says, maybe you have. ilya cancels his meetup with a beautiful young woman within the hour. things only get messy when shane realises ilya doesn't actually intend to kill him.

Shane was already furrowing his eyebrows, finding himself revisiting departure times and flight change fees for their Business Class tickets and how to tell his mother than the meeting with Calvin Klein needed to be rescheduled, again, except: Ilya leaned forward, palms flat against the white granite of their kitchen island. “I want,” he said, bluntly, “to see Sasha.”
