No one calls Helen her “wife” or “partner”, she’s just “Helen”. When Zosia talks about conversion camp she says, “you were getting to know yourself” not “you came out to your mom”. “Why Raban as a woman?” is met with a knowing smile and nothing else. She can’t say the words herself so the world reflects that. It’s so fucking sad. She was shoved back into the closet at 16. 30 years ago. She was in a relationship with Helen for twenty. Six. YEARS. The last thing she had the opportunity to do before the world ended was answer the question honestly: “Raban was based on my wife, Helen.” And she didn’t. And now it doesn’t matter. She can’t come out of the closet. She doesn’t have to. Everyone knows.
