Thinking about what if Suo was a genuinely joyful child, like what if Suo between 1-5 was truly just a ray of absolute sunshine, just absolutely adored by all, just the most curious kind little ray of light

Like what if Suo looked up the RC so much, what if he aspired to be with them, adored the people he met who cared for him, what if he had delusions of how amazing it would be, what if he daydreamed every time he trained that he was protecting his town? His city?

What if he dreamed about finally getting his RC tattoo, about wearing it with pride?

Like I just think there is a possibility where there is this devastating scene of Suo finally getting to the age where they start sparring more for real, where he can start actually doing more, he’s a little bigger now and he’s finally training with the adults and his world view is just shattered

He’s going from seeing in full colors to black and white, he gets hit for real, he gets the wind knocked out of him so hard he thinks he’s going to die, like there’s no holding back anymore

I think the angst of it always being bad and the problems always being present is good and realistic I just also think the angst of

“Oh I’m having my rose colored glasses ripped from me in such a way that I don’t think I can even begin to understand”

Fandom has such unresolved mommy/daddy issues about authors. If you apply a little reading comprehension skills to my original post you’ll see I didn’t say anything at all about the author. You guys always make “interpretation” about your beef with the author. You’re all obsessed with the author. This post is just about deciphering what is there in canon. Figuring out what is being communicated by the canon itself with all the words and images and basic formal elements that are there in canon. That’s all it’s about. It really doesn’t matter if the author intentionally put all those things there in a pattern that might support the idea that this one character’s queer. That’s not what this is about. What matters is if you can compellingly argue there’s a pattern of evidence there. Or not. Everyone is conspiring together to make me go insane still adding shit about authorial intent on my post.

“Dead Dove: Do Not Eat” is too often (incorrectly) used as a cover-all tag, on fics ranging from Vaguely Uncomfortable to Serious Shit, as a replacement for any intense tags relating to the story. People will use it to say “Holy shit guys some INTENSE SHIT happens in this story” without actually saying what that Intense Shit™ is.

In actuality, the “Dead Dove” tag is meant to be used in addition to other warning tags. Pulled from a scene from the show Arrested Development (look it up on YouTube!), it means “Hi! Hey! I labeled this fic to warn you of what’s in it, so you might REALLY want to read those labels! This fic is exactly what it says on the tin! The tags are accurate! Don’t say I didn’t warn you, because this is me warning you! Read the tags!”

So before you accidentally use the “Dead Dove: Do Not Eat” tag without context, here’s your preemptive lesson for next time. Please tag your fics accordingly! Ta!
