Rethinking the scene in Troy and if we take Nolans words "he wanted realism" , with Odysseus reduced to a sad traumatized man, then "Athena" was never the goddess but the random trojan girl he saw getting her head cut off in front of him in Troy. So all the time "athena" is a random girl he was hallucinating whenever he would feel guilty.

I guess to Nolan "PTSD war veteran with hallucinations" was better than "cunning prideful king of Ithace that gets help from the gods he's devoted to"
