Get ready, get set... Podcast Girls Week is one month away!

Podcast Girls Week is a week long prompt-based event where fans are encouraged to create works celebrating their favorite podcast women. Art, fics, meta, moodboards, AMVs, rec lists... whatever your heart desires. This year, the event will take place on July 6-12.

This year's prompts are:

First Love Monday: Revisit the fiction podcast that first got you into audio dramas, or explore a female character's first love (however you choose to interpret that). Twinsies Tuesday: Reflect on your favorite related podcasts (same world, same creators, etc.) or your favorite pair of connected podcast women (literal sisters, thematic parallels, clones, etc.) Wet Cat Wednesday: Spotlight a female character or podcast that goes through the horrors (because why should wet cat men get all the not-fun?) Transformational Thursday (I'm stretching the alliteration here): Celebrate a female character who is trying to Change The World, or a podcast that revolutionized what you thought audio fiction could be. Underappreciated Fave Friday: Show your adoration for a podcast that deserves more listeners or a female character who deserves more love. Taken Too Soon Saturday: Mourn a podcast that ended too soon in your eyes (a short run, cancelled, abandoned) or a female character who exited the show before you would've liked. Free Space Sunday

Frankie Vega's vocal performance during the opening scene of Episode 3 is just incredible. The only ambience is a ticking clock in the background. (At first, I didn't even want to put a song with this drawing, because this moment feels like a kind of sore, sober quiet.) I also enjoy it in fiction when a great loss happens for very banal reasons. There was no ill intent, no premediation and yet... And yet.

I finally got around to watching more than the first half hour of 2001 A Space Odyssey--more than a little bit for w359 comprehension purposes--and I have thoughts!

I always knew this was a pivotal inspiration for the show, but, uh, an isolated handful of astronauts very far from their commanders, unknowingly sent on a highly covered-up mission to contact extraterrestrial life, having to figure out why they're really out here, with one team member being an AI who's reliability is brought into question? Yup, I see it.

Anyways there's a reason the only character from this movie that anyone talks about is HAL 9000 and that is because HAL is the only character in this movie, everyone else is a cardboard cutout. And this made it pretty hard for me to actually get invested because I thought it would have been cooler if he survived and got to be the one to meet the alien monolith thingy.

So now I'm just thinking about how much more I would like it if the wolf 359 characters were there. And obviously this is mostly about Hera since she's the HAL stand in and HAL is the only character. The main difference between them is that HAL's entire identity hinges on no AIs of his type ever having screwed up or been wrong before, so when he does screw something up, he has a massive break down over it and kills everybody in his fear of being turned off for it (frankly! considering how fast the identical white guys turned on him for one mistake, justified!). Hera, on the other hand, has screwed up before, a lot, and lives in constant terror of being turned off for it. Its a different backstory but fundamentally the same motivation, the same fear, that fuels them. So like, just how bad would the situation have to get for, say, Minkowski (and/or Lovelace--Hilbert would have her shut down based on nothing) to actually seriously consider having to shut her down for everyone else's safety? How far would Hera, with her incredible intelligence and strength, go to protect herself from the perceived threat? Angst city, ideally. But I would want this au to have a happy ending where Hera got to meet the monolith too, since I'm still super curious as to how that would play out, so ideally Eiffel does succeed in talking everybody down before things go too far, its just super close and super angsty first and everybody has to cope with everything they almost did.

Then again maybe it's more interesting if Hera does straight up succeed in killing everyone else to protect herself and then has to grapple with that as she continues the mission and meets the monolith. If its like the Dear Listeners and doesn't comprehend death and Hera, as seen in her Bolero monologue, doesn't either until she watches Lovelace, Maxwell, and Hilbert die, maybe she only comes to understand the gravity of the atrocity she's committed through trying to explain what she's feeling to something that can never understand.

Before podcast girls week is over I want to shout out that I’ve started listening to G.O.B.L.I.N.S. And I’m obsessed with Elizabeth. Something is deeply wrong with that woman, she is a living train wreck, and I cannot wait to find out more about why the fuck she’s like that.

I don't think she is ever described taking an expressly monstrous form, but I felt like indulging in some 1974 Agnes. One of the more abstract concepts I associate with her is being taken to do an extracurricular activity one is good at but feels miserable doing. There are some thoughts on allegories for aromanticism as well, but it's been too long since I listened, so explaining that would probably end up being more Vibes than literary analysis.
