Jon steals Martin’s sweaters. This is an inescapable fact.

Martin doesn’t mind. The sight of Jon wearing his clothes – blearily coming into the kitchen on a cold morning with a familiar knit hanging off him like an embrace, nestled cozily on the couch in a hoodie several sizes too big – fills him with a warm, full-chested, wonderful feeling.

Time goes on, they’re together long enough for both to see their relationship as an accepted daily fact rather than a constant marvel, and eventually Martin gets tired of his warm clothes always being in the wash. So he buys Jon a stack of Martin-sized sweaters in colors and patterns that he’d like. Half a joke gift, half a genuine “here, now you’ve got oversized sweaters of your own to wear, you don’t always have to steal mine” thing.

Jon laughs, thanks him, and politely wears each one once. After that they stay ignored in the back of his closet and he returns to stealing Martin’s.

Martin rolls his eyes, muttering that it’s like buying a cat bed and hoping the cat will stop sleeping on your pillow. But fine, he thinks, if Jon won’t use these I will, at least I’ll finally have warm clothes of my own again.

It’s after he’s been wearing the new sweaters for a while that he comes home to find Jon napping on the couch, curled up in one of them – the argyle monstrosity that Martin had on recently. It hits him then - far, far later than it should have - that it was never really about Martin’s sweaters being big, or cozy, or anything about the clothes themselves. Jon just loves everything that feels like Martin.
