Displaced families say they are struggling to pay rent on damaged dwellings, as an acute housing crisis grips south-east Texas after Hurricane Harvey
Rocio Fuentes weighed up the cost of getting some new sofas for her new apartment in Pasadena, Texas, and decided the family budget could just about stretch to it. Just one month after moving in, Hurricane Harvey swept through and the Fuenteses were left not only with the ruined furniture but also an ongoing rental demand for a dwelling they had to flee.
âAt first we didnât think it would be that bad, but then the water came through the wall and up through the carpet,â Fuentes said. âOnce we saw the water wasnât going to stop, we left.â
Fuentes, her husband Jaime and their five children, ages ranging from seven months to 14 years, were plucked from the floodwaters by her mother, who arrived in a truck. They are now crammed into her sisterâs apartment and with no insurance have little idea where they will live next. Jaime is unable to earn money because his construction job has been paused due to the flooding.
But while everything has changed for this family, they are still expected to pay for their abandoned home.
âOur landlords say we have to pay rent and late fees and every day it is going up,â Fuentes said. âWe are paying rent for somewhere we canât live in. They said âyou arenât the only ones in this situationâ, but what are we supposed to do? We donât have any money. We donât have anything.â
Capitalism is evil.
Like some of the other comments in this are saying, legally a lot of landlords canât actually charge rent in a situation like this, so if you find yourself in this situation, you do have legal recourse. Â
In Texas, the tenant law dictates that you have a right to demand that the landlord repair any condition that materially affects your health and safety. Under Texas law, by renting you the property, the landlord guarantees that the unit will be a fit place to live.
So if itâs dangerously flooded and unhygienic THEY have to fix it, not you, and you can break your lease with no penalty or have the landlord court ordered to repair it. Most states have laws like this, so actually the landlords here are risking lawsuits and people legally nailing them to the wall by trying to charge on units that are unfit for habitation.
These landlords are really stupid because apartments that are flooded out and growing black mold are going to be impossible to prove as healthy and safe. Theyâre just trying to take advantage of people not knowing their tenantsâ rights to eke rent out of them for as long as they can before the tenants realize they actually canât do that.
Theyâre probably just counting on the tenants being too poor to afford lawyers.
Even more on the ignorance, tbh. This kind of shit is VERY common amongst predatory landlords, because tbh (while it is always BEST to get legal advice if you can) this is often the kind of thing that doesnât even need council. Itâs really fucking straightforward and simple.Â
What they count on is people not even knowing this: they count on people thinking âwell this isnât right but even if I can fight it itâs going to cost me SO MUCH and I canât afford it and -â and not even trying.Â

When you go to a haunted house, it may seem like youâre being funny by trying to scare the actors or jump out at them when you go through a second time, but guess what? ITS NOT FUNNY.
You pay us to scare you. It is your choice to go, so donât fucking go through if youâre going to ignore the rules and get too close to the actors as a âjokeâ.
These bruises happened because over the course of 4 hours, several people ignored the instructions that CLEARLY stated that they were to wait in the front room until told otherwise. Rather than listen, they ran into the next room and slammed into me- effectively throwing me into the wall. This didnât only happen once. It happened ten times at LEAST.
Then we had this asshole who thought that once I âdiedâ for the haunt, he could pretend to kick me to see if Iâd moved. I, being used to people abusing me- jumped back and slammed my head into the concrete wall.
YOU ARE NOT FUNNY BY BEING RUDE AT A HAUNTED HOUSE. WE ARE PAID ACTORS THAT YOU CHOOSE TO COME AND SEE PERFORM. YOU PAY US TO SCARE THE SHIT OUT OF YOU, SO DONT HIT US WHEN WE DO
I feel that this is relevant considering it is October and more Haunted Houses are opening up. I know it seems funny to scare the âmonstersâ but all you do is hurt real people. So stop.
Itâs not even October but Iâm still spreading this
SIGNAL BOOOOOOOOSSSSSTTTTT!!!!!!! Now
YeahâŚyour director may want to consider reblocking
We donât have a director? Or blocking??? Itâs a haunted house bro, not a play
Reblogging for relevance-
I work at a Haunted House every October, and have been for the past few years. Our house in particular is staffed by Volunteer workers who are either earning credits for Graduation, or people who know the Family that owns the haunted attraction. In our City, weâre one of two Haunted Houses, so while we open in late September, we tend to get incredibly busy during the month of October and often work from 6pm until 2, 3am on weekends.Â
We do not get paid to help out. Due to our location, we get a lot of drunk guys coming through, and a lot of âfunnyâ teenagers. In my several years working there, Iâve seen Actors get grabbed and thrown, stomped on, kicked, bitten, everything. A lot of the Actors at this attraction are young teenagers, Middle and Secondary School students, so this kind of abuse is terrifying and potentially emotionally scarring.
Thereâs a position half-way through the house we call âPsych Wardâ, and itâs essentially a jump scare. The scare is a corner-room, boxed in with walls and broken windows, that the Actor pops out of and shouts and taunts the people going through. October, 2012, a couple were going through the Psych Ward corner and the scare went off as per usual. The girlfriend of this couple got very startled but laughed it off and continued on. The boyfriend, however, back-tracked and went up to the broken window and punched the Actor in the face for scaring his girlfriend. The Actor, who Iâm going to call Tracy, had a black eye for a good two weeks solid and the couple had to be escorted out of the house and were banned from the property. Ever since weâve ruled that Veteran Actors (someone whoâs been there for 3+ years) are the only ones allowed in this particular Scaring Spot.
He paid to get scared and then got violent when we delivered.
There are so many stories I can tell of ignorant customers banging back on scares and injuring the Actors inside, grabbing props from the actors and hurting them with it, destroying props because they thought it would be âfunnyâ.Â
I just want to raise awareness that the ACTORS ARE STILL PEOPLE. Weâre instructed to get the best kind of scare out of you, sometimes with no pay at all (like this particular attraction), so please respect our work.
We wouldnât come to your job, mock you, and push you around trying to be âfunnyâ. Donât come to our job and do that to us!
This is one reason I donât do this anymore.Â
My toe only JUST healed and itâs August. I was tour guiding and I instructed a group to go one way and they thought it would be funny to go the wrong way and I got stampeded and stomped on. My toenail was black and painful for months.
I got punched square in the chest by some lady while working a haunted attraction at an amusement park. It was very clear that she did it on purpose, and then she ran away. Iâm not a big person (5'1" and 105 pounds at the time) so it knocked me over and I ended up with a bruised sternum right before the biggest stage performance of my career (which included two large and p difficult fight scenes) to date. Needless to say, I suffered lmao
Please. Donât be that lady.
For the upcoming season
when i worked at halloween horror nights i got really messed up by guests. welts, bruises, even got my nose busted once, blood and all. a fellow scareactor even got her ankle broken.
donât do that. donât. fucking dont. if you know you get violent when scared, donât go. end of story.Â
If youâre like me and canât get scared without a physical reaction (punching, jumping, running, kicking, etc), might I recommend Hellevator for your scaring needs? Â You wonât hurt anyone and these lovely actors can continue to do their job without being frightened.
Also, if youâre that one friend who tries to get your jumpy/kicky/punchy friend into the house, if you succeed, prepare to be the punching bag.  Offer to be the punching bag. You deserve no less for doing this.
I have a violent reaction to jump scares due to bullying and high level of anxiety by back then. If I do not recognize you right away I MIGHT hit, punch, scream or even cry. I slapped my cousin once when he scared me because of this reflex.Â
Itâs one of the reasons why I dislike horror movies and jump scares and am unable to play horror games (well, aside it being a trigger to anxiety).Â
So I avoid haunted houses by all coasts even if people tease me for chicken out of that. I donât like, I should not do it, I wonât pay to get scared and I wonât injure anyone. Simple as that. it shouldnât be that hard to get it.
