some things to note:

this is causing normies to rope xenogenders and neopronouns into it, and claiming they are radq identities. the tale old as time, people try to exclude people from their own communities and only get lumped into the things their excluding by outsiders.

this is gonna cause a spike in fakerads who are pretending as a "joke", the community may become hostile or unsafe to be in. (even more than we seen with jessicur, it is getting HUGE on tiktok)

I was listening to an essay yesterday, it was about the drop in literacy and how modern schooling has changed how people learn to read in general and how it shapes online discourse and bleeds into comprehension and it was a very fascinating, very informative essay that somewhat changed how I think about profic/anti discourse. The essayist points out that there was a shift in western reading education from phonics (literally reading words in pieces and learning what each meant, then learning how individual meanings work together in sentences, like building blocks) to an analytical, social feelings-based reading that has a “correct moral answer” (ie seeing the word “problematic” always means “this is bad” and should elicit an appropriate reaction to that social meaning, rather than the literal definition of “there’s a problem”).

It made me realize that maybe a lot of the discourse around morals in fiction really does partly come down to the “have the Correct Social Take, certain words trigger a specific social response regardless of context” type of literacy, because according to that essay’s sources, that’s the type of literacy over half of US Americans have been taught. To that type of teaching, it doesn’t matter if the text is fictional, the contents of the text is problematic and problematic = bad for society so the text Must Also Be Bad For Society, because the problematic trigger words were used.

Obviously antis have been around far longer than that particular type of reading education, but they did seem more rare back in the day, and seemed like more of a conscious effort to tell about what they didn’t like rather than an eradication effort, and they trend young now, so I wonder if there is a correlation between that particular style of reading education and the rise of puritanical pressure on fandom (and media in general). There’s a lack of encouraging curiosity in modern education, so it’s getting harder and harder to teach people proper analytical and context-based reading (by design, these are things taken out of education by the government on purpose, it’s been going on for decades). And of course this isn’t a failing on behalf of those who were taught this way to read, they’re victims of the system that is literally designed to take away analytical independence, nuance and curiosity.

Anyway that’s it, I’ve been wanting to yap about this to Someone but didn’t want to dump it on my non-fic friends and thought maybe you’d find it interesting! Keep up the good fight against censorship!
