Find Me Where the Wild Things Are // Demetri x Vampire! Reader.
"Her heart was a dark forest, her soul all the wild things which dwelt between the trees."
A/N: this has been sitting in my drafts for so long and finally...it’s free. <3
Pairing: Demetri x Vampire! Reader.
She is the voices of the forest.
The shadows that dance on their own, the wind running through your hair, the footfalls creeping a little too close, the who when you call “who’s there…?”
She is a million legends and myths and ghost stories in one form, hiding in wilderness that have haunted history. She's the ghosts of dead girls and lost children, wolves in the woods, voices that belong to no one, shadows lingering just in the corner of your eye, monstrous beasts in the trees and the rivers, she's been everything except what she really is:
A vampire.
Y/N never loved anything but the forest, safe there with her father and her cottage and her dog, Tully. Other people were strangers, scary and cruel in her innocent eyes...they killed the animals she considered her friends, mistreated her forest with trash and pollution, cut down swaths of beautiful things in the name of progress. Raised by her survivalist, paranoid father deep in the American wild, it was little surprise that Y/N grew up to distrust humanity, hardly considering herself human at all. She, like her father always said, was a wild thing! But, regardless of her distrust, one still needs things to live comfortably, don't they? Medicine, books, food and things...and as her father's health failed, it became Y/N's job to travel the miles and miles out of the forest and into the city.
Two things happened in her last trip into the city.
One was that Y/N was attacked by a near feral nomad but, by some miracle, survived the attack. She remained hidden in an abandoned building while the transformation took hold, only able to crawl out of the darkness three days later. And when she did. Y/N discovered the second and the far worse thing that had happened:
The forest had burned.
Stupid college kids had drunkenly set off fireworks and started a forest fire that burned her home to the ground, destroying everything. Y/N rushed to the burned remains of her childhood home and found within it the charred bones of her beloved father.
And with that, distrust grew to outright hatred.
Y/N discovered an ability to manipulate the minds of others, causing auditory, visual, and tactile hallucinations. She learned to take on a thousand different forms and hunts through the forests, killing only humans she sees as being "jabberwockys" (a term her father used to help her understand the dangers of other people, using her love of Alice in Wonderland), people who kill/abuse nature and animals especially, as well as those she simply sees as cruel. That being said, she can be kind as well, having saved lost children and hikers before, helping anyone she saw as being innocent.
Still, she enjoys it...being a monster.
The voices of the forest, the monster in the woods, the ghost in the trees, seeking vengeance against the cruelty of humanity. A thousand myths and urban legends can be attributed to her, though the connections were never made, until, by pure coincidence, she stumbled upon Demetri Volturi.
She avoided vampires as rule.
Scared them out of her lands and far, far away from her but...he was interesting. He was so pretty. And Y/N followed him for miles in different forms, trying every trick of her trade to scare him. It never worked. This vampire just seemed amused by the strangeness happening to him and finally, with little else, she had to approach him.
She had to know who this strange creature was.
And, for some reason, he was just as mesmerized by this beautiful, wild thing with flowers in her hair, a lacy and torn nightgown dragging in the tangled grass. He lingered longer then he should have with her in the forest, falling more and more in love with each passing moment. He tries to convince her to come with him to Volterra, but her fear of anything outside of the forest is still too strong, refusing to come but promising to see him again.
“Where will I find you?”
“Find me wherever the wild things are.”
For the first time in all of her days, Y/N leaves her familiar forest for the wilds of worlds beyond. Slowly, she makes her way through the world, Demetri finding her time and time again. Aro, interested in this living legend and powerfully gifted vampire, has given him permission to wander off with her from time to time. By the time she makes it to Italy, three things are clear:
Y/N is no longer afraid of the world.
Demetri is no longer afraid of love.
And they are mates.
The final time they meet, in the forests of Italy, she finally goes home with him. And from there, a dark and beautiful happily ever after begins.
Little Things:
Y/N becomes a spy for the Volturi. Her powers allow her to observe things without ever being noticed at all and that is very, very useful to Aro. So she still wanders quite a bit and Demetri goes with her, tracking down those Aro wishes to observe for her. They like to make little honeymoons out of these trips. She also continues her hauntings and pranks and such, it’s a hobby.
She is still considered strange among vampires...but Felix likes her, as does Afton and Santiago.
Y/N once got in a fist fight with Emmett Cullen, due to his habit of killing bears. And, knowing better than to get involved, Demetri and Jasper just sat on the sidelines and made small talk. The fight ended when Y/N ripped Emmett’s head off (which won’t kill him, of course, but still hurts. A lot).
Animals like her. She uses her abilities to calm them in some way and, eventually, they get quite used to her. Her favorites have names and she makes up little stories about them (Demetri is the only one who knows about that).
Y/N likes Lucy Maud Montgomery novels, ghost stories, and can play the guitar.
