Wow, thanks for the quick reply! I'm mostly doing 1 - 5 minute gestures, focusing on capturing the essence of the pose. After that i'm trying to draw the figure in basic geometrical shapes (e.g. cylinders for arms and legs). I'm getting pretty decent with drawing from reference but when it comes to drawing from imagination i'm struggling a lot.
i did a few quick sketches to illustrate the type of silhouette drawings I do. Maybe try to not use too much the cylinders shapes. It’s fun to use but it may stiffen your characters.
僕が基本的使っているシルエットのボディーシェープです。細かい物無し、四角い頭。それでポーズに集中しやすいかなと思います。
Hi Cedric! I would like to ask you a question about figure drawing. Are there any special exercises for animators? Did you learn drawing by copying/studying another artists? Bahi once said that it's important to exercise drawing silhouettes but he didn't say why. I'm just asking because i do the same exercises over and over again and i feel like i'm not improving anymore.
Hello pokipo! Every animators have their own way of drawing/learning characters but I think that the key for drawing effective animated characters is to draw them as simply as you can. Drawing from the silhouette is a good technique, it allows you to see the overall shape and motion without drawing too much details, which is easier to redraw and correct without spending too much time. Also, if you never did it, try to use a box for the head instead of a circle, it’s quite efficient to give the head orientation without the inner line. Try also to draw your character from the body itself and not from the head, the spine is the most important part of a character pose it will give you a good body shape.
You say you do the same exercise over and over, what kind of exercice do you do?
