our idiotic ancestors used to believe stuff that's not true but luckily we've now figured out all the true things to believe in
Our cozy kitchen in the late afternoon
Often i am hit with the fact that this is it. Like i'm driving an hour down the same state highway i've driven my entire life, this is it. I'm in the middle of a beautiful celebration with people i care about, this is it. it's dark and silent and I'm by myself in the kitchen pouring cream into my coffee, this is it
The this is it-ness of it all
Joan Didion writes, in On Keeping a Notebook, that the purpose of keeping a notebook, or a journal for that matter, isn’t because you simply want keep a personal record of things; but because you want to remember the person you were at that specific moment. we write things down on our notebook/journal/diary (whichever one of those you keep) because we want to remember. we want to remember what specific people meant to us on a particular day or hour. or minute. we want to remember our first impression of something (or of doing that something), possibly of someone, too. sometimes we think we’ll “always remember” important events: “I’ll make a mental note of that” etc etc. but in reality everything is fleeting. so Didion says write it down. keep a journal. that way, people, places, and certain events will always be there in case you ever want to come back to them sometime in the future. but also so that they don’t ever haunt you.
[grabs your shirt] listen. listen to me. the practical is holy. the everyday is sacred. the simple act of surviving is divine. do you get it? sanctity begins at home, in the hands that build and the lives we live and the deaths we die and the worms that eat our bodies. if making something by hand is not worthy of veneration then nothing is.
I’m going to the conservatory and the zoo tomorrow; treating myself like a blue-haired senior who needs to be bused from her retirement home to on weekends for cultural enrichment.
I made this post two years ago, and nothing has so meaningfully improved my life as “treat yourself like a senior citizen and schedule some enrichment.” I have an honest-to-god enrichment calendar now. It exists specifically as a place to put all the stuff that I might want to do on a random evening or weekend. And I read local papers a lot more, searching for things to do, smaller events that are more up my alley or offbeat street fests that I wouldn’t know about otherwise. (Side benefit—I know a lot more about local reporting too.) It doesn’t matter that I put plenty of events on the enrichment calendar that—because it’s on a Wednesday, because I’m tired, because the planets are in the wrong position—I don’t go to! The point is not create an unbending obligation that will haunt me to my grave; the point is to pay more attention to the world, and leave my apartment to join it sometimes.
I also encourage further seniormaxxing by looking at the adult education classes in your community. Pick up a new crafting skill, do a little yoga, just get your inner pacing tiger out of its cage!
Things get so crazy and u lose urself for a little bit then u get a night to wind down w a book before bed and u realize the 14 yr old girl who used to spend all her time at her school library tucked in her favorite corner reading her favorite books never left
they dont tell you this but like half of adulthood is just washing the same FUCKING pan
WASHING THE FUCKING PAN AGAIN!!!!!
Your doing so good at increasing your skill stat in pan washing. I'm so proud of you. Best pan washer out there.
