“Japaneses took notice of certain artist. The same artist who drew Riamu with ugly nose and made her say Trap is slur. Gonna translate some

The Japanese discover Tumblr redraws of anime characters -
Spoiler - They hate them and Tumblr.
Don’t blog my trauma xd
(pictured: my redesign in the left, nessa’s original design on the right)
man, i love nessa’s palette, her sandals (you thought crocs were bad???) and her hairstyle,
but im not a fan of her attire. nintendo gives their dark skinned ladies minimal or sexualised clothing, especially in proportion/comparison to their white/pale skinned counterparts (if u gonna argue with me on twintelle bc she is “”covered up”””, just google her and tell me what kind of fanarts come up)
As you can see in my redesign, the fact that she is a water type trainer is no excuse not to give her something that makes more sense. besides, i just feel like her canon outfit does not fit the whole soccer uniform aesthetic the gyms seem to have going on? im okay with the sandals tbh theyre so horribly cheesy they won my heart, but it simply does not feel as thought out as, say, milo’s uniform
with all this in mind, i drew a little redesign taking into consideration how actual womens soccer uniform look like (spoiler alert: just like mens). To convey her water aesthetic, i simply gave her a wetsuit (with those gorgeous turquoise highlights) and she wears it under her clothes, so she always looks ready to go for a swim in galar’s colder waters.
her shirt’s sleeves are rolled up, and the bottom is tied to show a little better her more spunky jock side. as a final touch, i edited her pokeball to be a dive ball, just like her in-game model.
overall im pretty happy with my redesign. what do you guys think about it?
reblogs are appreciated! clowns do not interact with this post or start shitty discourse, brain rot is nasty and i dont want that on my posts
Nessa says “Fuck you!” to OP for thinking a black character wearing a fucking swimsuit is sexual!!!
Nessa says “Fuck you!” for skimming what they wrote, making assumptions, putting words in their mouth and speaking over people of color who think nintendo needs to fucking let their black women characters wear modest clothes for once!
I AM A PERSON OF COLOR DUDE. (I’m black and Native American). Don’t put words in MY mouth.
I’ve read through the thing MULTIPLE TIMES, and I still don’t agree with what they did. It seems that these days ppl on Tumblr think that just because a woman character shows skin (no matter the reason) means that they’re being sexualized.
This edit, in my opinion, is contributing to that problem.
Since I don’t want to repeat what other people have said about this post, I’ll just provide you with a screen shot that says exactly what I’m trying to get across.
Eyy, that’s me. 😋
Imagine the fucking drag that shit would cause in the water.
When an artist makes a dark skinned character in pastel colours, in plain light or something else that makes their skin even a slightly hue lighter than the canon.
They probably think every fanart of a black skinned character must be painted with vantablack skin colour or it's whitewashing
It’s whitewashing if the character’s skin isn’t painted with Black 3.0.
Agent 8′s first Splatfest.
hey OP what the shit?
also I fixed it
I’m not sure where to begin with this as I normally don’t post anything other than my art here, but I have seen enough from your side to prompt me into making this post, so I suppose we should start with the obvious:
1) Swearing, editing my works, and worse of all, throwing heavy accusations around like there’s no consequences and being proud of it. I might not know who you are but I can tell you’re rude and ignorant based on first impression. You have already lost quite a bit of my default respect that I have for anyone before we even begin.
2) I read that you’re a PoC and most likely belong in the group of minorities from where you’re from. Now that’s something you and I have in common, but our biggest difference is, I don’t throw accusations lightly like you did me.
3) Now let’s talk about art. I have seen people trying to explain to you how color, light, tonal values work, but you seem convinced that as long as it’s not a direct eye-dropped tone, it’s considered whitewashing. There’s a difference between giving a dark-skinned character a lighter shade due to lighting/mood and downright turning them white. And just for clarification, I generally favor pastel-like tones with saturated values at times, which usually resulting in a softer and brighter shade in the things I colored.
Let’s have a look at the official art:
We know that the creator is trying to convey an atmosphere. Marina is being colored close to a beige tone here, but we can tell she is still shades darker than Pearl, and naturally so. Everything here is meant to look soft and light to convey a sense of relax.
Here’s another example of light and mood:
Notice the differences in how the creator colored in these two pieces. One is not more ‘right’ than the other. They’re just being depicted in different mood and settings, often times exaggerated to display a more dramatic effect.
4) I’m not sure if you’re still with me, but I shall continue on. Your heart is at the right place and your cause is noble. Racism is a very bad thing and I should know, but I think you’re picking the wrong battle. You’re accusing people of something that isn’t intended, creating more enemies than allies, making the environment hostile for the wrong reasons. Your lack of understanding and proper knowledge in certain field has, frankly, caused more harm than help towards your goal and, indirectly, hurting the art community. I don’t bear any ill will towards you and I’m definitely not expecting an immediate change, but all I ask for is that you take a step back and think things through before you decide to throw down the gauntlet again.
1) I showed the proof right there that you edited the skin color to be lighter I’m accusing you of white whitewashing and I have the fucking evidence RIGHT there its not baseless. I have every fuckin right to edit art if its harmful and contributing to fucked up colorism plus I’m not claiming your art as mine, where am I saying that??
2) Well if you’re a POC I would have expect for you to understand that it’s fucking wrong to brighten a dark skinned girl cause of racism and colorism! like hello? Being a POC doesn’t automatically make you free of whitewashing
3)
all your art with marina the same color so this lighting stuff is kinda thrown out the window. there’s no light source and its just making stuff whiter. also you just. admitting that you like pastel stuff when you could just. desaturate tones and keep the dark skin. plus you using the official splatfest artwork is bad cause its notorious for mostly always brightening Marina’s skin color.
4) Nice job blaming me for, supposedly, “hurting” the art community when all I’ve done is point out and fix you guys’ fuck ups and mistakes. Like. you could have just. said “oh shit sorry, I’ll fix it”, fix your drawings, and that’s it! instead of this long essay describing why you’re in the right.
5) Also, thank you for not taking the time out to tell your followers to not bother me. cause I’ve been called names and shit from people in my inbox because YOU reblogged my stuff and your reach towards thousands of users lead them to treating me like shit. Good responsibility of your power!
Let me explain something:
you honestly do not get how colour theory works.
Some of the art you’ve been claiming as ‘whitewashing’ is a literal shift in lighting. The amount of time and effort it would take to perform an entire change in Marina’s shade would take another piece of art to be made entirely because of all the effects that go on in post processing. Like desaturation, filtering and/or flat shading that uses bases of a background.
These artists don’t have to exclusively use Marina’s 3D model all the time- flat colours on Splatfest art exists for a reason. Art is meant to be what the artist sees, and concieves throughout their perspective.
also strange how you’re pretty much a hypocrite with this here. does this mean we can say ‘pearl is 5 shades too dark’? of course not, because this is subjective.
all of this could have been avoided if you just didn’t make a fuss.
Blackwashing doesn’t fuckin exist you idiot
why don’t simply let people do fanart of whatever they want and just nice and gently tell the artist about a “detail” that the artist just didn’t noticed?
People like you Jay fucking disgust me, let the dude do his art. He can do whatever unless either commission. GTFO of here with your stupid ass.
Blackwashing doesn’t exist.
(Ignoring Deadshot, Domino, the Torch, Annie, etc.)
Again, blackwashing doesn’t exist.

Black washing does not exist and here’s why
You might be asking yourself, why do we have a problem with This:
And not this:
They are the same thing, right?
Wellll…Not at all.
Let me get into detail of why you cannot Blackwash a character
POC DO NOT GET THE SAME MEDIA REPRESENTATION LIKE WHITES DO
It’s no lie that for centuries whiteness has always been promoted both constantly and positively. The first thing you see when you turn on the TV is white. Us minorities don’t get the same representation as white people. We are not constantly shown on TV. Whiteness is promoted on TV, movies, magazines, Billboards, toys, and Etc. Because we are so deprived of any representation when we finally see ourselves being represented in the media we are happy to see ourselves being normalized. To take a character that is a person of color and white wash them is completely selfish when the majority of TV shows already represent white people. The difference between black washing and white washing is that white people only see black washing as a white character turning black while us black people see whitewashing as representation being taken away from us. Throughout history black people have always been either white washed or represented negatively just look at one example, BLACK FACE! During the error were blackface was acceptable we were represented as lazy, arrogant, greedy, disgusting, and ugly. Black face was used to make a joke out of black people. Just look at the difference between the representation of black people back then:
And white people:
See the difference? White people are represented as normal pure and Superior while black people are represented negatively. This is why representation matters so much to us. When we are deprived of good representation in the media for so many years and we finally that a character representing us it’s no surprise that we would get mad when we see a character whitewashed. Black people have been promoted on TV either negatively or either when we are white washed. This is why you cannot blackwash a white character because it’s simply does not take away any white representation. When you look at a white character being turned black it barely has an effect on you guys because 99% of TV shows consists of mostly White characters. White people don’t know the feeling of growing up thinking that your race is ugly because all you see on TV is white. White people don’t grow up hating their natural straight European hair texture. White people don’t grow up wanting to be black to the point of hating their own race. Blackwashing will exist as soon as I see white people dealing with the same self hatred like black people do. Until then, BLACKWASHING DOES NOT EXIST.
hi, op! as a black woman, i have one thing to say to you: blackwashing exists, and here’s why: the concept of blackwashing happens. it is real, point blank straight-out. it’s not the question you should be asking. a more appropriate question would be “is blackwashing inherently ethical”? and to answer that: no, a whole fucking lot of the time it’s not. and here’s why for that:
1. Blackwashing Anna and Elsa is Inherently Bad
the frozen picture you used is, frankly, kind of fucking gross. it’s not progressive in the slightest. the movie frozen is based off hans christian anderson’s novel “the snow queen”, which is in itself an entirely nordic and danish piece of mythos and culture. frozen takes place as a fictional “nordic” kind of country. anna and elsa themselves are not just blank, Caucasian slates, they are a representation of nordic and danish storytelling and culture. norway and danes are predominantly white countries, especially when considering their royal lineage. blackwashing anna and elsa along with the country they live in removes integral parts of their character’s inspirations and histories. it does absolutely nothing when changing the perspective of them. it’s simply changing their skin for the purpose of brownie points.
2. Representation Already Exists, and It’s Not Stagnant
i do agree with you that black culture is under represented in media, but it is not entirely nonexistent. you just aren’t looking. to name just a few:
•susie carmichael
•gerald johanssen
•penny proud
•dijonay jones
•franklin (peanuts)
•keesha franklin
•valerie brown
•cyborg (teen titans)
•michiko malandro
•monique (kim possible)
•princess tiana
•numbah five
•static shock
and that doesn’t even scrape the surface of real life actors, icons, humanitarians, equal rights activists, singers and celebrities.
black people need to band together and create new, original black characters that have their blackness be integral and unchangeable- or at the very least, just be unalterably black. changing the color of another character’s skin is tasteless and unoriginal, and could potentially remove from what actual background the character’s original story might derive from.
3. Blackwashing Takes Away from Other POC
yup! people are blackwashing other poc under the basis that they are not oppressed, or that eastern and southern asians/hispanics/native americans, etc, are inherently “whiter” than black people despite their respective cultures. it’s not just white people. this is a gross issue. this is especially prominent in eastern asian media, one of the most notorious being “my hero academy”, although the is far from the only example. other examples include mob psycho 100 and splatoon 2, to name just a few. look through tumblr long enough and you’ll find so much more.
if the character’s ethnicity influences their beliefs, ideals, or personality, chances are that changing their skin color is a stupid idea that helps absolutely nobody.

READ THIS AGAIN
If you need to steal an existing character and change their race to feel good about yourself there is something fundamentally wrong with you.
If you want something you need to buy/make it - not steal it from another person.
This is what race change of a character in the media is.
This is insulting - and not to the Bastard_Whites™.
If the only way you can get a POC character in the media is by changing an existing popular character then it shows how little you care for actual representation in the media.
It shows that you only care for a “race quota”.
“Yeah we need at least three black people in the movie so lets go the easy route and change two whites into black people.”
Isn’t this infuriating to you? This is the lazy approach. The “I don’t give a shit” approach that lacks any sort of effort and creativity involved.
I’d feel insulted if the only way for my race to make an appearance in the media was by changing an already established character of a different race.
It’s like telling me that my race is worthless and can’t achieve anything of it’s own.
This is why race change of any kind is bad.
The difference between black washing and white washing is that white people only see black washing as a white character turning black while us black people see whitewashing as representation being taken away from us.
Because that’s simply what it is OP, just a race bend and most normal people see it like that. Sure, there are a few idiots out there, who might cry “but my white racial superiority!” when a character gets blackwashed, but most people are chill with it. Or, to be more exact, WERE chill with it until gremlins like you started your holy blackwashing crusade.
Back in the day, in the distant past of 2003, when they’ve announced a live action Dardevil movie I was excited. You know why? Because they decided, that the Kingpin (as you can see a white character):
Would be played by one of my favourite actors at that time, Michael Duncan Clarke:
He fit the role perfectly and his Kingpin was arguably the best thing about that dumpster fire of a movie, because he had charm and charisma, and was simply badass, as opposed to all the other characters.
I was ok with his casting, because for me it was just a role, a different interpretation of a character. Because back in 2003 race was nothing more, than a pigment of the skin, something the media and viewers no longer cared about.
But today? 16 years later and after spending nearly 7 years on this very hellsite, that is Tumblr I see that the colour of ones skin still matters. It matters in the most vile and disgusting way with the main difference, that the worst bigots and racists are no longer white trash, but “woke” black SJWs, who whine about every character, that isn’t as black as coal.
If you think that blackwashing established white characters into unsympathetic assholes makes them “better”, and see them as a worthy representation of yourself:
Then know, that in my eyes, they aren’t any better than the black caricatures from the early 20th century.
@mybackupplans
Because they think he’s white
The truth
Or maybe people didn’t try to make a big deal about it?
Yeah I don’t recall 500 posts about how white people are going to be mad about it or how I’m racist if I didn’t think it was a good idea. It’s almost as if people are manufacturing outrage so they can play the victim.
Aquaman came from a 1960′s American comic book. Jason Momoa is Native American and Native Hawaiian and grew up in fucking Iowa. The Little Mermaid is a Danish fairy tale that was written in 1837 and has fuck all do with America.
Tbh, I never really gave a shit before, but this smug, vindictive hypocrisy is getting on my last nerve.
If you’re going to throw a fit when corporations take things like tribal patterns and sell them on their garments, essentially profiting off of someone else’s culture, then you don’t get to shame anyone of European descent taking issue when the same thing happens to something from their own culture.
Disney set The Little Mermaid in tropical shit. Sebastian was fucking Jamaican. You think a tropical Jamaican crab would be in fucking Norway?
Cartoons and children movies don’t make sense. Cuz they’re for children.
The right is so fucking fast to get offended over idpol now. It’s all we ever fucking talk about.
I see you’re having a little trouble with reading comprehension and…apparently geography too so lemme help you out.
1) Danes aren’t from Norway. They’re from Denmark which is a completely different country.
2) I’m not on the right. If you’re going to make assumptions about me, I’ll make twice as many about you.
3) I know it doesn’t make sense. In fact, I said that exact same thing just the other day.
What. A. Coinkydink.
Anyway,
Just to elaborate a bit here.
3) I don’t like double standards. Many of the people who cause a ruckus over whitewashing and cultural appropriation are the same ones making all the “Lol white people mad” comments now.
See: The complaints about the cast of Aladdin (an originally Chinese tale, mind you) being whitewashed.
I see two people who are white. Two. Out of how many? And one of them isn’t actually shown in the film. He’s voicing one of the non-human characters.
And……..none of them are Chinese.
4) Disney has been butchering other people’s creations for decades without so much as a nod to the original creators, or the cultures they take them from. That’s one reason why I do not like them and haven’t liked them for years. But as far as being offended, Disney has done a lot worse than pander for a quick cash grab so I’d hardly put this at the top of the list.
5) I didn’t fall off the turnip truck yesterday so can we stop pretending this has anything to do with representation?
6) I want to see more Asian, Native American, and disabled female characters. They are all wildly underrepresented (even more so than black characters), but I will not accept this lazy trend of race-bending, gender-bending, and appropriated stories taken from other creators.
7) I’m not interested in “claiming” already-established characters, or “getting back” at other demographics. That’s not what representation is about.
8) Complaining about people who criticize a corporation that only cares about raking in huge profits with the least amount of effort is not a good look. Children deserve better than sloppy seconds (and exploitative slave labor).
9) But hey, maybe that’s just me.
10) If you want to fork over your hard-earned money for less than the bare minimum, that’s your choice. But please stop insulting everyone else’s intelligence by trying to convince us that Disney gives a shit about anything other than their bottom line.
11) I mean, look how well they did with their “first openly gay character”. Nope, no pandering there. They totally didn’t get everyone hyped up for the Big Gay Moment™ that turned out to be: “Hey, we’re two men dancing together….by accident! But we’ll go with it….for a whopping two seconds! Wow, this is so gay!!!”
Adding in my two cents:
#StopTheRedheadCharacterGenocide (it’s always a redhead getting racebent by Hollywood)
Why aren’t Blacks good enough for their own, original characters?
Edit: Fans of Aquaman were pissed Jason Mamoa was cast. His work in Justice League won them over.
skin color ref because some of yall non-black poc and whites keep fucking up as if yall don’t know there’s other shades of brown when u racebend for woke points or something
(non-black artists please reblog)
Please reblog regardless of your race/ethnicity.
heres a chart I made for myself showing diffrent undertones and how that affects the skin if anyone’s intrested
Use this to make a skin palette in your art program!
everyone must use the same pallet

Politically correct edit of Ariel from the Little Mer- wait a minute
Diversified Snow White. Take that, Disney, you racists! Feel free to and replace your ugly, white-washed VHS cover.
Mattel is being absolutely, atrociously lazy with Thomas & Friends! They said we were getting a TOC (train of colour) only for Ashima to be completely white-washed! Here is my politically correct re-colour. Please use this version to show Mattel what diversity amongst fictional grey-faced trains from the 1940′s really looks like!
..AND SHARPEDO FIN FLIPPERS FOR TORPEDO POWER
Now this is a redesign I can support!
sooooo the new pokemon sword/shield designs have been really sexual and white washed so I redesigned them a bit to make them more diverse and removed the male gaze stuff so that people can be more comfortable looking at them feel free to use these redesigns in your fanart sweeties love ya!!!!!!
