Keith and Lance are literally the outsiders of their group
Pidge highlights this when she calls Lance the goofball and Keith the loner after saying pretty nice things about everyone else’s roles on the team
And it’s pretty clear that these comments shaped their mindset about who they are. Keith became doubtful of leading because he believed he wasn’t capable enough because he’s a loner
And Lance thought he wasn’t a valuable part of the team after Blue rejected him because he thinks he’s only a goofball
Let me also also add on that the episode that this all takes place in is called “Red Paladin”, and that’s literally in reference to both Lance and Keith as a whole…Interesting
But other than that you have this “loner” and “goofball” who feel they aren’t capable of being valid or even have potential because they lack confidence in who they are. Keith and Lance are immediately singled out in this way, and I feel like that is important
That’s why when they don’t have their main support group around (Hunk and Pidge for Lance, Shiro for Keith) who are they drawn to for help and support? Each other
Lance could have easily confided in Pidge and Hunk about his insecurities on the team, but he showed his vulnerability to Keith instead
(I really don’t find it a coincidence that he felt more comfortable going to Keith over Shiro as a leader. He most likely felt that Keith could relate with him more. They both have similar emotions, even though they think they’re opposite)
When Keith is regretful about his decisions, who does he go to first out of everyone on the team to confide to
And in general when Shiro was gone, who was Keith’s main support system? Lance, because he can get through easily to him for the same reason, because they have a relatable connection
Hunk and Pidge are both brains combined, and we’ve seen so many times how even though they’re good friends, it’s evident that Lance because he’s more goofy and not as skilled in that area, doesn’t feel as if he fits in with them too much
So even though he wouldn’t admit, it I wouldn’t be surprised if he was really that hurt to see Keith go. As a matter of fact it’s painfully obvious, you can see it all over his face
He tries to cover it up by saying “Who am I going to make fun of?” Since that’s typical Lance, the one who’s supposed to hate Keith. But he generally looks worried, because apart from Hunk and Pidge, Keith is honestly really the only one who could truly understand Lance the most in this sense
And you can imagine how he feels when Matt comes along, someone who’s so similar to him and is just as smart as Hunk and Pidge
He literally holes himself up in his room by himself being antisocial, which is so unlike Lance, while they hang out
I saw a similar post to this and I honestly think it’s true. We know Lance is not one to show his emotions or vulnerability too much, but I do believe that when Keith was gone he was feeling alone. He may have had his friends yeah, but they’re not outsiders like both him and Keith felt they are, they can’t relate to how he feels. And he doesn’t seem to have any intentions of showing his weakness to them either. I just feel like this fact might become really important in the future
