I’m not saying it wouldn’t make a great full-length feature film.
But, like, I’m willing to accept any form.
A 20-minute short art film.
A self-referencial five-minute College Humor gag on YouTube.
A goddamn 30-second ad for waffles that shows them as a married couple.
Idk if any of you have seen the movie Every Day, but I was really let down by it and let me explain why
In the movie it is clearly stated that A (aka the person who wakes up in other people’s body everyday) is « a girl 50% of the time » and yet, because our main character and love interest was a girl, A woke up in a male’s body about 6 times (and in a girl’s body about 3-4 times tops) and everytime they were in a boy’s body, there were a lot of kissing scenes and all that, but everytime they were in a girl’s body, they never did anything, except one (1) kiss.
So anyway the movie was great (I haven’t read the book so idk if it’s different from the movie about the genders and all that) but as a bisexual woman I definitely felt let down and i felt like the gender thing was forcibly focused on heteronormativity to please the general public.
I noticed that, too. The trailer tricks you into thinking Rhiannon’s is going to be (or at least discover that she is) bi, but upon rewatching the trailer after seeing the film, you realize there’s only the one girl during the montage of kisses. The film even specifically sets up that almost all the romance occurs when A is male, the silent implication being that Rhiannon’s straight, so she can only interact physically with A when they’re in a male body.
A, set up as Rhiannon’s soul mate in a particularly on-the-nose way, even decides that a great match for her just happens to be the generic tall, white boy who is suitably the 16-year-old version of deep for having inspiration quotes on his wall.
They barely delved into Rhiannon’s inevitable reputation as a slut for being seen with a handful of different guys in the days after she broke up with Justin. She ought to have been making eyes at girls half the time, a missed opportunity to address the myth of bisexual promiscuity.
In fact, so much time is devoted to A and Rhiannon’s romance that literally every other relationship of Rhiannon’s that the film makes you believe is going to be repaired with A’s help are left unresolved or resolved with little attention:
Her older sister’s reckless behavior
Her father’s untreated bipolar disorder
Her mother’s infidelity and martyr complex
The neglected friendship with her best friend
Does Rhiannon skip school a half a dozen times during her relationship with A? It seems like it.
In fact, you can tell they strained to tell the story properly by making it a teen romance when making Rhiannon and A college students or young adults would fix a lot of plot holes, including how Rhiannon has so much free time, so much independence from her family, and the social maturity to address the implications of their relationship. Not to mention filmmakers are slightly more comfortable exploring a character’s evolving sexual orientation when they’re 18-25 rather than 16.
That whole sequence of their hypothetical future seemed like an even more interesting and heartbreaking movie. Like, why make 17 Again when you could make The Time Traveler’s Wife?

Objectively speaking, why does this surprise anyone?
It’s like a game show where the goal is to unlock a door.
Women get to use their hands.
Men have to use a key attached to a pool noodle.
And they have a three-minute time limit.
And they win a prize after a prize no matter what.
And the show will more often than not tell them they succeeded regardless.
And they get to go home and brag about how they were given a larger noodle than most contestants.
Meanwhile, Team Lez has figured out there’s a prize behind the door too, have already won three times since you can play as many times as you want, and you get to be the host next.
And while there’s no rule against the guys using their hands to claim unlimited door prizes, the Rulebook says unless he uses the pool noodle, he can’t be declared the winner.

I’m not going to lie, one of the major draws of the film was that it had a mute protagonist who used sign language.
But the movie went into excruciating detail to not only confirm, but explain the mechanics of, the protagonist having intercourse with a mutant fish-human hybrid.
There have been hundreds of closeted gay men in film, and thousands of black female secondary protagonists, and del Toro alone has directed 21 movies. I would not be surprised if any of these things coincided with a Best Picture win.

Aziz Ansari is a real life person, and one who’s next big project after Parks & Rec was creating his own show where a theme addressed multiple times was the differences between the experiences of men and women in America, and men’s general ignorance of the latter.
Assuming what was alleged against him is true, and it quite possibly could be, Ansari seems to be not a predator, but an idiot who failed to pay attention to nonverbal cues, and as a result hurt a woman. He has shown that he wants to be the kind of person who is trying to unteach problematic stereotypes so this kind of thing happens far less.
Don’t turn what could be a positive social movement into a vengeful witch hunt.

It’s actually quite easy to divorce gender and sexual orientations.
Instead of using terminology like “homo-” and “heterosexuality”, we can instead use “gyne-” and “androphilia” etc., which define orientation by solely the target gender instead of in comparison to source gender.

No, that doesn’t make Diana Israeli. “Israeli” is a nationality. Depending on the backstory, all the Amazons—except Diana—are the reincarnated souls of abused women from across the globe, who of course, maintain the visage of their previous life.
Diana, on the other hand, is the child of her mother, who in the DCEU is presumably Danish or otherwise European, and Zeus, a Greek God, so you would expect her to be white.
Also, Gal Gadot is white. She’s white Israeli. Her grandparents were European Jews who immigrated to Israel. European immigrants to the United States don’t become Native American after two generations, and neither does Gal magically become Middle Eastern and in need of having her skin artificially darkened in fanart.
When drawing Gal Gadot!Wonder Woman, make her skin color match her actual skin color.

What was the whitewashing in Prometheus? I don’t have any interest in seeing the movie but I also know very little about the movie so was it writing thing or a casting thing?
First of all sorry for the delay I’ve been busy. The whitewashing in Prometheus consisted of a white looking alien being the supposed origins of humans on Earth. When in reality we know that humans are descended from black Africans. So it was both a writing and a casting thing.

No hate to Jade but shouldn’t Jasmine be played by someone with darker skin and not someone’s who lighter??? Like yeah Jade is middle eastern and black and she looks like Jasmine somewhat, but colorism and whitewashing is a huge issue when it comes to live action movies. If Aladdin was to have a movie with this kind of mindset I can already see everyone being light skinned and Jafar being the only dark skinned one because he’s the villian… I think it would be great to see Jade act I just don’t think she is fit for this role. (I mean let’s not forget how they were thinking of getting a white actor for Mulan.)

Quietly Queer Female Characters in Advertising
Ms. Brown the M&M: An attractive blonde woman is setting Brown up with an unseen woman named “Susie” who is “dying to meet [her]”. Though ambiguous about romantic vs. platonic, later context of avoiding the redheaded “Kristen”, who will “devour” her, implies the former. While also a food joke, Brown sets up Red with Kristen, who clearly sees it as a sexual introduction.
Two of the girls from the Nissan “Black Sheep” ad: A black-clad brunette girl on a painted-black tricycle, while riding past, gestures towards a small group of similarly-aged girls on more femininely-color tricycles. There is a close-up on one of the girls, a blonde, who stares back agape, in awe and not distaste. When she passes a preteen boy, no interaction is shown. While the ages of the characters (around 6-7 years) make the conclusion hardly definitive and the interaction innocent, it can easily be portrayed as puppy love. Not to mention the rejection of certain aspects of femininity can make for a GLG metaphor.
Metaphors for racism like Harry potter’s muggle-prejudice honestly pisses me off because Harry Potter is such a blindingly white universe and, if Rowling was rly going for a racism-metaphor, she could have at least /attempted to include more diversity in her books Like I can probably name more dragon-species featured in Harry Potter than explicitly written people of color It’s just so half baked like u /say that u r communicating tolerance and inclusivity but u can’t be bothered to include us in ur stories lmao

It’d be hard to name 10 species of dragons, but your point is still valid. Rowling made it a point to include characters of color, but it was still pretty clear that unless otherwise indicated, she envisioned a character as white, and the casting of the films did likewise.
