he hates that he made you and his daughter upset
Being a pro hero, a dad, and husband at the same time proved more difficult than Katsuki had ever expected.
He was a great father, incredible even, and a loving husband despite his flaws. His temper had lessened over the years too thanks to his heart problems and improved levels of patience.
Of course, there were moments when Katsuki did fuck up.
Particularly when he came home one evening after work and found that you and Chiharu were angry at him, and he had no idea why.
He came home later than usual, having been overrun with paperwork at the agency after a busier day with villains.
The door creaked open as he unlocked it, clicking his heavy gauntlets off by the warm entryway as the scent of spicy ramen crowded his senses. Katsuki yawned, stretching his tensed shoulders as he moved through the house.
“I’m home.” He called out, the silence slightly disconcerting but not ringing any alarm bells. Feet padded down the hall as he made his way past Chiharu’s bedroom.
The door was already open, and his eyes softened seeing his six year old daughter sitting on the carpeted floor playing with her toys.
At first he didn’t notice her sour mood, just leaning in the doorway with a soft smile.
“Hey kiddo.” Katsuki muttered into the quiet, expecting Chiharu to run into his arms as she always did despite getting older now.
However, his face fell when not even a ghost of a smile formed on her face upon turning around.
In fact, he was frankly alarmed when the girl got up from her spot on the floor, storming over to the door, and promptly slamming it shut in his face.
He stood there for a moment, extremely puzzled and a little ticked off. Chiharu never acted up like this. Sure, she’d inherited a little bit of the man’s fierceness but she rarely ever showed this much aggression, let alone towards him.
He didn’t move for a few moments, face contorting. He debated going inside to talk to her, but figured it would be better to find out from you what was wrong with her.
Had she had a rough day at school? Maybe it was because he was late home?
Heading into the kitchen, he found you stood there by the counter putting leftover ramen into a dish supposedly for him. You must not have heard him come home.
You didn’t notice his presence until he leaned beside you, hip digging into the counter edge as he frowned a little. You didn’t even glance up at him, expression blank and perhaps…sad?
“Hey baby.” The man muttered gently, rolling his sleeves up and yawning with exhaustion. “What’s up with Chichi? She okay?”
His eyebrows furrowed, narrowing his eyes down at you as you ignored his presence. Now he was just getting frustrated.
“The hell’s wrong with everyone today?” He scoffed, tone teasing but laced with some genuine concern. “What’s goin’ on?”
You remained silent for a moment, disappointed thrumming through your veins like a live wire. Katsuki stayed leaning over you, expression riddled with worry.
“Are you serious right now, Katsuki?”
Okay, he definitely must have fucked up. You used his full first name. Not ‘Kats’ or ‘Suki’. You were angry.
“Okay, I’m gettin’ ticked off now.” He grumbled, stiffening as he rubbed the crease between his eyebrows. “The fuck’s goin’ on? You mad at me for somethin’?”
He stared at you, wracking his brain for any reasons that you and Chiharu would be pissed at him. He just couldn’t seem to find any and that only frustrated him further.
You let out a sigh, finishing dishing up the last of the ramen and slamming the empty pot into the sink.
Then, you turned to face him. Eyes swimming with upset and disappointment.
A humourless little chuckle of disbelief escaped from your throat. “That kid looked for you in that audience tonight, praying she’d see you cheering her on.” You mumbled, quiet but still radiating with discomfort. “And you weren’t there.”
Katsuki looked baffled for a moment. His eyes widened, taken aback. Had he missed something?
He was about to retort, something about not understanding and being extremely confused, before it hit him.
Chiharu’s school award ceremony had been tonight.
He’d been so swamped with paperwork he’d completely forgot. This wasn’t even the first time it had happened either. A couple of months ago he’d missed her talent show.
He was absolutely crushed.
You stared up at him, watching him go through the different stages of realisation. His expression shifted, a devastated sigh escaping his chest as he pinched the bridge of his nose.
“Shit- baby I’m sorry.” He breathed out, guilt and shame washing over him like a horrible tidal wave. “I- god, I lost track of time. Paperwork was kicking my ass-”
“-Yeah.” You cut him off, nodding as anger rolled off of you in waves. “Yeah, I figured. It’s always that, isn’t it? You’ve got responsibilities, bigger ones than showing up for your daughter.”
Katsuki hadn’t felt so shitty in a long time. His heart twisted painfully between his ribs, strings tugging with guilt.
You carried on, angered by his silence. “That girl is your biggest fan, Katsuki. She wanted to see how proud of her you are. She was crushed when she realised her dad wasn’t there to see her win.”
“It’s not me you should be apologising to. I don’t even think an apology will fix this right now.” You hissed out, moving away from the kitchen to head to bed. “Make it up to her. I don’t care how you do it.”
And then you disappeared down the hall, leaving Katsuki to stand there and stew in his own regret and shame.
You words pierced a whole in his heart, his daughter’s door being slammed in his face feeling pretty deserved in that moment.
How was he going to fix this?
The next day, he had a plan.
Katsuki had gone to bed a lot later than he’d originally planned, thinking long and hard about how to show his daughter that he truly was proud of her.
Eventually, he figured it out.
One long phone call later, he managed to go to bed and knew that the next morning, he’d be ready to fix things. With Chiharu, and with you.
It was around 10 o’clock in the morning when you got up and started breakfast. Katsuki was nowhere to be seen which only angered you further. He’d left a mark on you, and your daughter, so of course his lack of presence only pissed you off more.
Chiharu got up a little later, sadly padding into the kitchen in her pyjamas as you sorted out her breakfast.
She didn’t even ask where her dad was which broke your heart a little. She was clearly still upset and you didn’t blame her.
Soon enough though, the front door opened and Katsuki came in. His face was a little flushed, having been rushing around for the last hour or so, and he came into the kitchen with a soft little smile on his face.
“Hey sweetheart.” He breathed out, a metal briefcase in his hand that he placed on the kitchen table near Chiharu.
The girl glared at him, still bitter about his absence at her event the previous evening. That smile on his face didn’t help either.
He crouched beside her and you watched curiously from behind the kitchen island, pottering about as you wondered what he was doing and where he’d been all morning.
“I’m sorry I missed your award last night.” He sighed, placing a gentle hand on her knee. She didn’t shove him off which was always a good sign. “You wanna know why I missed it?”
Chiharu huffed, crossing her arms. “I don’t care.” She muttered, looking away from him sourly.
You had to refrain a snort from in the kitchen, amused by your daughter’s sass.
Katsuki didn’t look dejected though. He understood her frustration. “You won that award for a reason. Soon enough you’re gonna give me a run for my money as a hero.” He breathed. “So, I got somethin’ for you.”
At that, his daughter visibly perked up a little. She remained stoic, not wanting to give up her disappointment just yet but clearly giving away her curiosity.
She didn’t speak, so Katsuki fidgeted with the metal briefcase on the table as he rambled on. “You’re doing so well, kid. Beatin’ all the other little brats at school, just like I knew you would.”
“Figured since you’re already this far, might as well make it official.”
You were just as confused as Chiharu as Katsuki opened the case, spinning it around to face her.
The girl’s eyes glistened and widened, sitting up straight as her gaze landed on the contents of the case.
You moved around the kitchen island to take a peek, and what you saw made you melt a little inside.
Sitting folded in the case, was a child-size hero costume.
Over the last few years, Chiharu had done some half-assed doodles of what her future hero costume would look like. Reminiscent of her dad, she wanted bright red colours and gauntlets. She’d already began to present little signs of her quirk, tiny crackles of familiar explosions erupting in her palms whenever she got excited.
Katsuki couldn’t stop the grin on his face as Chiharu lit up, gasping and hands lighting up with enthusiastic crackles.
“You’re a hero now, kid.”
Chiharu squealed, taking the costume from his hands and examining it like it was the coolest thing she’d ever seen. Perhaps it was.
Your cheeks turned pink from smiling, watching the scene play out at the dining table. Your daughter fawned over the costume as Katsuki explained the little features of it, showing her how to put it on.
“Well, get suited up. Gotta show us what the future number one hero looks like.” Your husband gestured for her to try it on and the girl immediately scampered away to her bedroom, costume in hand.
Katsuki stood up, now turning his attention to you as Chiharu got changed in her room.
You chewed at your bottom lip, heart melting like butter in your chest. “How did you do this, Kats?” You asked softly in the quiet of the kitchen, watching him move over to you.
His arm hooked around your shoulders, bringing you closer to him. His breath fanned over your face, pleased now that he was back in the good books.
“Made some calls last night.” He replied warmly, stroking the back of your hair with affection. “Thank fuck for my designer. She saved my ass.”
You chuckled, reaching up to give him a little kiss on the lips. He happily reciprocated, just glad he’d made good with the both of you.
“I’m not just buyin’ my way out of this either.” He added, reassuring you and himself. “Gonna put the kid first now, always. Should have in the first place.”
You nodded, content with his answer. “I’ll believe it when I see it.” You whispered and pecked his cheek, caressing his jawline with your fingers.
Chiharu came scrambling back in shortly after, now fully decked out in her little hero uniform.
She pulled a bunch of heroic poses, flexing her non existent little biceps and pretending to shoot the fake gauntlets on her arms.
“You look amazing, sweetie.” You grinned, giggling at her posing as Katsuki watched.
“I’m gonna be the number one hero! Watch me!” She cried out with a beaming grin, ecstatic now that she felt like she’d truly won this. She knew that Katsuki was proud of her now.
He reached out his fist, giving her a cute little fist bump as his cheeks began to ache from smiling.
“Hell yeah you are, kid.”
