It froze him in place, mainly in curiosity than anything. When the other turned his way he blinked repeatedly. “O-oh,” he stammered out, “It just took me by surprise is all. You can actually speak their language? How did you even learn that?”

Drik grinned broadly, clapping the guy on the back like they were old friends, “No worries buddy, it surprises a lot of people. Languages are my thing, if I’m not chatting with goblins it’s merfolk, giants or centaurs... although that last one’s not so impressive since they speak our language rather than the other way around.” he chuckled, scratching his cheek with a finger. “Plus it’s a fun party trick! And a great way to insult someone without them knowing.” he added with a wink.

Ivy didn’t usually need to come to Gringotts. In fact, she avoided it. Too many memories of home mostly because Ivy had left behind her parents’ riches and despite having access to the money still, she wasn’t someone who needed a lot to feel content. However, she did need some money and well, her father always reminded her that Gringotts was the safest place to keep it so she did.

She had just finished taking what she needed when she overheard some loud and harsh voices going back and forth. Ivy couldn’t help but stare in amazement. “…You can understand their language?” She asked a bit amazed.

Dirk grinned, he was used to people being surprised, it wasn’t often a wizard could talk to the goblins, “Yup! I learned it in school, they’re a pretty fun bunch when you can talk to’em in their own language, plus you get so much gossip,” he chuckled, “You have no idea the love triangles this lot get up to.” He thumbed towards the bank and laughed again, “Better than the BBC soaps- uhr, muggle shows.” he added, since that reference went over a lot of wixen heads.

“Maybe that’s the trick to not fighting my sister over language tutoring every break,” Cora said with a laugh. Lucie had put her foot down on everything from Ancient Runes to Italian– or really, any lessons Cora tried to sign her up for. “I never would have guessed; they’re always so professional when I go in. Must be the work hard, party hard sort.”

“Trust me, I’ve learned things from the Creatures and Beings I speak to that make me see the world in a whoooole new light,” he grinned deviously, “Like you’d be surprised how many drainage systems feed into Merfolk territory... and what they can send back up with they’re feeling particularly mean.” he snorted, “They act like that around us cause it’s what we expect to say; sometimes playing the role makes life easier.”

Rod restrained himself as the man lurched closer to him. He was well aware of Dirk’s talent for languages, especially those of lesser beings. It only made sense, considering he was a lesser being. It was a blatant statement of the times that a muggle such as himself could land a job at the ministry. One that made Rodolphus sick to his stomach. One that he hoped to change here in the near future, seeing as the Dark Lord’s popularity was on the rise.

“I have no intentions of hearing either Latin”, the man knew some, considering many spells had ties to ancient Latin. “Nor Spanish.” He paused, pacing both hands upon the emerald colored orb of his walking stick. How he wanted to reach out and whack him with it. But it wasn’t popper. Perhaps one of these days he could manage to lure the green haired pest down to the cellar in his home. Until then, Rod had to keep his appearances up, for some still considered muggles a pivotal part of society. “And there’s no need for Merfolk, considering I don’t see any present.”

Dirk grinned, oh yea, this guy had a stick up his ass bigger than the cane he walked with; it probably helped him keep his back straight given the weight of all that superiority. Well, Dirk found the best way to deal with folks like that was to kill them... with kindness and a perky attitude, “Really?” he asked, tilting his head, “How about Japanese? Or Giant-Tongue? Now there’s a fun one- Little man.” he grunted and growled out the last two words, it was a common insult for the weaker among the Giant Tribe, “That’s a real fun one, so long as you don’t get squashed when you’re trying to learn; it’s come close a few times!”

“Ahh but you never know,” he sing-songed, gesturing to their feet, “Some sewers go back and forth right into merfolk territory, and the ones in muggle-polluted waters can get reeeeeeeal nasty, best to stay on their good side or they send some grindylows up your pipes to give you a nasty bite in the bath.” According to the mertribe who’s waters eventually led into the Themes, it wasn’t unheard of and the cause of several muggle horror-stories.

a part of her couldn’t believe it, but then she remembered people were generally stupid and apparently cresswell was no different. “flower shop, me?” she scoffed, she couldn’t imagine that kind of life. “i’m a cursebreaker, i work with the goblins as well.” but she didn’t bring them flowers, no, she brought them treasure which they seemed to quite appreciate.

Dirk continued to look at the woman for a moment before he threw his head back and laughed, “Whoops, sorry I must’ve got you confused; y’know it’s funny that I can tell all the goblins, centaurs and merfolk I know apart but always confuse the people.” he sighed, “Oh well- anyway, have you brought something cool with you now?” he asked, eyes gleaming, “And if so want me to go with you when ya hand it over? Goblins are fun but boy will they fleece you if they can.” Though it was much more difficult around someone who spoke the same language.

That was true. Sirius and his friends were well known for that. To this days, it was some of the best days of his life. The days where he felt most free without any responsibility attached or any expectations except get passing grades which didn’t come with much effort. People often underestimated how intelligent Sirius really was. He chuckled, “Did we ever get ya?” He wondered as he glanced at Dirk. He then looked back at the broom. “I was just thinking of buying one for fun.” It was a slight lie but Sirius wasn’t sure if he wanted to bring up his thoughts. “Bo staff?” Sirius asked with a tone of curiosity. “That’s for martial arts, right?”

Dirk grinned, “Luckily no, but a lot of folks thought you did this at first,” he pointed to his bright green hair, “That was some Gryffindor’s in my year messing up; a potion exploded, landed all over my head and boom green hair.” Course it could’ve been dyed back with the right counter-potion, but Dirk decided he’d liked it and kept it ever since.

“Ahh, why not? Were you on the team in school? He’d missed most of the games, having some of his extra language classes held at the same time. “Yup! Aikido in my case, my dad taught it to me,” he lent in close, “Between you me and the shop window it’s a handy skill to have; one time in school a fella tried to hex me but I had’im on the floor with his hands behind his back before he could say ‘bat-boogey’.”

a squint in his eyes as he hears a grown man squeal. what an odd thing to do as a grown man. he holds the pup in his arms to make sure it doesn’t jump out. “mmmm, yeah no, don’t really have the time.” he says, that was a lie. all he was going to do was to put the pup in a box and write free puppy on it and then go back home and stare up at the ceiling of his jail cell like flat which is something he found himself doing more often than not. "besides, it’s not my job to make sure it gets fed. you can have it though.” he says instantly putting the puppy in the others arms. “and take it to the cafe or whatever for the treat. who knows, maybe its owner is there.” he says not really sure if he wants dirk to know what his name is after that squeal from earlier.

Dirk blinked surprised (and a little impressed) by the swift dismissal, “Dude, who hurt you?” he asked with a bemused chuckle, “He’s only a little puppy, how can you not wanna look after that face?” He let out a soft breath of surprise and then had a warm, wiggling bundle in his arms, “Just cause something’s not our job doesn’t mean we can’t do it,” he said, adjusting his arms to hold the puppy carefully.

“C’mon, don’t be like that. You started this by picking him up, might as well see the journey through to the end,” he nodded his head towards the mouth of the ally, “For you know I could be a dog-maiming psychopath, best make sure I’m not running off with Akira for any nefarious purposes.” And yes, he had already named the puppy.

Despite himself, Gus smiled – though, he realized it, and fought it as it was happening, ending up with a half smile, half smirk – not just because he was familiar with that exact look, but because it was more observant that most demonstrated themselves to be. “So you’re good with languages,” he surmised, looking the other man over as he came closer. Damn it, he didn’t want to be sucked into anything today. He had a task to get taken care of, not that it was a very difficult one, but it certainly wasn’t going to be done very quickly if Augustus was going to let himself get diverted by this ….. green (fucking hell was he green top to bottom?) monstrosity.

But he was smiling, this green man, and already he had piqued Augustus’ interest too many times for Gus to have had any hope of getting back to his schedule. His target was gone already, anyways, and to pop back up so quickly could draw the man’s suspicion. He was the one who’d asked a question, after all, he could have just kept walking. “So you’re very good with languages. That’s impressive.” The words were honest, from Gus, who, gifted enough there himself, hadn’t attempted to tackle any of those this man had listed. “Moss-head?” he repeated, disliking it. “I mean, a nickname from a giant, even a part giant .. it’s an honour of a sort. He… tried?” Augustus laughed, though he didn’t want to; it was hard to reconcile a giant’s intelligence with their effort in nicknaming. “Well. By your expression, I’d say you prefer your given name, at least to Moss-head. Which is …?”

Dirk grinned broadly at the other’s expression; working in the ministry (and with goblins) so much meant he saw his fair share of grumpy faces, it was always a little gratifying to pull a grin outta one or two people (even if, like this fella they tried not to show it). “I guess so, I practiced with a lot of them when I was little and wanted to keep it up when I was in Hogwarts, it’s nice being part of conversations, y’know?” He liked being able to dip into and out of chats and he understood people (Beings and Creatures) better by talking to them. Honestly if more wixen made the effort to understand the language and culture of the others they shared the realm with, they might’ve avoided wars like the ongoing one... though he tried not to think about that too much.

He laughed and nudged the man with an elbow, like they were already the best of friends, “You think that’s good you should see me with a bo staff.” As they honed in on Giants, Dirk shrugged, a wry smile on his face (he’d done nothing but grin the entire conversation) “You just say thank you and get used to it, besides like you say it’s meant well. Considering the first time we met he tired to step on me I think we’ve really built a relationship.” He stuck his hand out, “Dirk Cresswell, though I have been known to respond to Moss-Head, Forest-Blessed, The Green Wizard and Land-Walker, depending on who you ask. How bout you? Any cool nicknames or do I not get those until I take you out to dinner?”

❀ ↠ Priscilla sat sipping at her tea, watching the people come in and out. Her eyes wandered towards the window every now and then before ending up down at her cup that was swaddled between her hands. The girl was in her head again thinking of the past, if her mother was right. She was barely skimming by with work. She just about jumped out of her skin when she heard someone snap their fingers. Her head snapped up as she blinked, “what? Sorry, I wasn’t listening.”

Dirk let out a sigh of relief followed by a chuckle, “Well thank goodness, I thought you’d slipped into a stupor there; sorry about that snap but it was either that or a shoulder shake and I don’t like grabbing folks without permission.” he said, “I was wondering if I could sit opposite you? All the other tables are taken and I’ve got an hour to kill before Gringotts needs me.” he paused, grinned and added, “Hey! You’re Priscilla right? It’s me, Dirk, you were a couple of years above me in Hufflepuff, I’m the guy who’s hair got turned green in his second year,” he gestured to his (still very green) hair to make the point.

Cora had just left Gringotts herself, document case in hand as usual. She wasn’t sure if the wizard had meant to speak to her or to someone else, but it seemed more awkward to ignore him than to respond. “That’s just about the one word I do know,” she admitted, repeating ‘goodbye’ in Gobbledegook. “I’m here often enough that I feel like I should know more, but there’s always so much else going on.”

“Oh it’s totally worth learning,” Dirk, stepping closer and chatting like they’d been friends for years, “Lemme tell you the amount of drama that lot get up to is better than the daily soaps on the BBC,” he said, thumbing towards the bank, “Currently there are at least two long triangles, three affairs and a baby on the way with two suspected papas.” he chuckled, “Half the time I’m in there for work I just end up getting the gossip.” And Arlow (his old goblin mentor) loved to give it.

“I didn’t ask,” Augustus pointed out, instantly. He was minding his own business (he wasn’t), he wasn’t giving anyone around the bank his attention, just taking a break. Sure, okay, a human speaking the language of the goblins had gotten his attention, but he hadn’t been the only one. The man he was tailing had looked too. Clearly, it was a natural response. Unlike the other curious people, though (as far as he knew) Gus hadn’t looked because he’d heard Gobbledygook, he’d looked, again, because a human had spoken it.

Of course, his target was gone, now, and instead he seemed to have gained all of Dirk’s attention - not something he’d been prepared for. Despite himself, he was curious, but he didn’t want to be trapped in a moment; Gus had things he needed to be doing, and he hadn’t made time for getting sidetracked in his itinerary. “But I suppose that now I am,” he conceded, a few moments later; too long a pause to hide that he’d hesitated, but not long enough to be entirely rude. “Not many people can speak Gobbledygook, how long did that take you to master?”

“You didn’t have to,” Dirk grinned, “I could tell by your expression, you looked the same way my dad does when I flip languages mid-conversation.” It was almost inevitable given how many he spoke, sometimes he just couldn’t think of the right word in the right language and switched for it then moved back. Which was fine if he went with Japanese but a few times he’d nipped into Spanish or Latin and gotten the same expression this man had been wearing.

His grin only broadened as the handsome stranger gave into curiosity and Dirk stepped closer, leaning against one of the counters after exchanging a brief greeting with a goblin teller. “Hmm, I think about three years; Mermish took me four and I’m three years into Giant Tongue; that one’s much harder to practice since if you annoy a giant or bore them you’re likely to get a club swung at you.” he chuckled, “But I’ve got a buddy with a tribe now! He calls me moss-head,” Not super inventive but he’d take it.

While waiting for his soon to be wife to arrive, Rod stood upon the front steps, flipping through the Daily Prophet. Nothing good was in the new though just the ho-hum woe me of muggle lovers, crying about war. One which was far overdue. Too long had muggles been allowed to walk among them, now, finally, someone was willing to do something about it. That someone being The Dark Lord. Rod had just gotten to a semi interesting section about quidditch when he heard some of the most foul sounding things he’d ever heard. Looking up he spotted two pest who needed to be extinguished, the green haired little muggle speaking to a goblin. “How eloquent”, the man stated, words dripping with venom.

Dirk had been the only Asian boy in an inner-city public school and a muggle-born in the walls of Hogwarts; he’d met more than his fair share of rude people in his time and it would take much more than this man’s charming tone to put him off, instead he grinned broadly and took a jaunty step closer, arms linked loosely behind his back.

“Not really, if you wanna hear eloquent I’d suggest Latin or Spanish, Gobbledegook is said to have links to ancient Welsh cause of all it’s guttural pronunciations and as for Mermish, well-” he chuckled, “That one’ll really make your hack your throat up.” And probably cause this fella (who oozed privilege like an overpowering aftershave) to drop his silver spoon in disgust.

When: Present Day (Game Time) - Morning Where: Diagon Ally (Outside Gringotts) With: Open to all! :D

Dirk had taken it upon himself to head over to Gringotts and help smooth out a dispute over a recently deceased Wizard’s estate. Having developed several friendships with the goblins there he was seen quickly and together they’d gotten to the bottom of the mess. He’d need to present a report to Mr. Mockridge when he saw him next, but via large he was done for the day!

The goblin he’d worked with, named Banrast, escorted him to the front doors of the bank and both exchanged goodbyes in Gobbledegook, the harsh, violent sounding language drawing a few looks. Dirk smiled at one such onlooker and explained, “I know it may sound a little harsh, but we were only saying goodbye.” a light laugh following his words.

hearing the squirm of the puppy down the allley it instantly comes up to him and he sighs hesitant at first, but picked it up anyways, it seems to have just gotten out, it shows no signs of being injured or even has a speck of dirt on it. the puppy does appear to have a home for that it has a collar but no tag. he looks around to see if anyone is nearby cradling it in his arms. “hey!” g says speaking up a bit to the first person that he saw. hopefully its owner is nearby “this little guy yours? found him wandering in the alley.”

“Woooow,” Dirk cooed, “He’s not mine but boy is he adorable!” The young man practically squealed and reached forward gently, running a few fingers over the small head and adorable ears, “Poor little fella, you think someone might’ve left him behind? Damn it’s enough to break your heart.” his lower lip jutted out slightly. Sure he only had a small apartment but maybe if he took the lil’guy onto some jobs with him he could get a nice place and good food. “We should hit up a cafe on the south side, see if we can gethim a little treat, don’t ya think buddy?” he paused and added, “Oh, I’m Dirk by the way. Hi!”

it was an overcast day, the gloomy sort of thunder that just rumbled along that always made hestia feel more comfortable. she wasn’t a sunshine girl, she loved the rain and it threatened to loose itself on the patrons hurrying over the cobblestones. she stopped outside madam malkins, shopping bags in one hand and her wand in the other, ready to unfurl an umbrella; she turned to head to another shop and nearly bumped into another coming the other way. she stopped short, frowned “best not to look at your shoes in this crowd.” she chided, knowing she was as much at fault as they were, but unwilling to admit it.

“I’m my defence, I was looking up, not down,” Dirk chuckled; he’d been looking at the clouds, their dense grey colour appealing. Much as he loved sunny weather (great for a jog outside) he liked rain too since it was refreshing; plus it could feel pretty damn freeing to get caught in the rain. More to the point, the chide didn’t seem to affect him at all, “Hey, you work in the flower place don’t ya? I’ve seen you in the windows a few times on my way to Gringotts; I work with the goblins there. One of’ems pretty fond of purple flowers, I should stop by your place to get some later on.”
