Hi! I just wondering, do u have any tips to not getting sleepy in the middle of lecture? I’ve tried everything—stop eating too much food, getting enough sleep... But I still, and AAALWAYS feel so sleepy in the class and I dont think that I had this kind of habit in first semester, to the point I started to think that I have a really serious problem and have to check my health :( what do you think? Thank you so much! ❤️
obviously, I can’t give you medical advice and if you feel like you’re always tired despite a regular good sleeping schedule and something has changed, definitely go see your family doctor (or a doctor, I don’t know what you have access to). Check it out, and even if it’s nothing, at least you’ll know for sure and won’t be wondering and so worried. Always take care of your health.
with that being said, here are my personal ways of being energized in class:
regular sleeping schedule - i know you said it already but I want to emphasize it. For me, it’s not good enough to sleep 8 hours one day and then the next morning I feel super good. It takes a few days of regularly sleeping 8 hours. So make sure you have a schedule where you fall asleep and wake up at the same hours. You’ll be astonished how your body starts adapting.
good quality sleep - make sure you take 60 minutes before falling asleep to do something relaxing, not electronic related. I know, I know it’s hard because I love tv shows and checking social media before bedtime too. I’m adapting a night routine and something is better than nothing! we can improve and make progress.
so nothing that involves bright lights.
when it starts getting dark start using your screens safely aka turning on the night light mode.
reduce your screen’s brightness as far as possible
most laptops have a night mode, that reduces blue light and contrast, and makes the screen redder
if your laptop doesn’t have it you can use f.lux. Actually, I recommend f.lux for everyone
dimming the lights around your house. I put a warmer light in my kitchen and now I can’t stand the brighter light I used to use. It really makes a difference!
make your bedroom extra dark and quiet!
regular exercise - especially in the morning, and of any kind. 20 mins of cardio or yoga, followed by a quick shower before class, is enough for me to feel 10x more energized. it’s hard because if you have class really early you need to think about your sleep as well, so never sacrifice sleep if you don’t have any other option but to exercise after class. It’s fine!
for me waking up an hour earlier and giving myself the option of a morning routine that includes meditation and exercise increased my focus and retention levels at lectures.
other exercise ideas before class: walk to your school, take the long way to your building. taking the stairs instead of the elevator, either going up or down.
coffee/caffeinated drink/ matcha/ natural orange/lemon juice - I know this is a controversial one so I added caffeine-free options if you simply don’t want to drink coffee, that’s absolutely fine, that are a lot of tea options or natural fruit options to explore and are super delicious! these drinks, paired with a healthy breakfast (my favourite ever is microwave oatmeal, it’s super healthy and quick to do in the morning) and healthy snacks along the morning like fruit or crackers, give you energy throughout the morning!
I love coffee in the days I’m feeling more tired, and a simple expresso lasts me the whole day because I don’t go out of my way to drink coffee in the days I’m not tired. Restraint and moderation is everything!
I’ve never tried matcha but I’ve heard it’s a great coffee replacement.
natural orange juice is one of my favourite drinks, I have it every morning and it definitely wakes me up. I should have lemon juice once in a while though have to be braver!
prepare the class beforehand - I find that it’s easier to be focused in a class if I have an idea of what the lecture is about and what the lecturer has to say. It’s easier to follow the train of thought and understand, and therefore makes me more interested.
active learning during lecture - I know this sucks if you’re really sleepy but it’s better than falling asleep. take notes, find the information in your textbook, write questions and things you don’t understand or to look afterwards. try to get as much involved as you can in the process of understanding. it’s easier if you find it interesting though.
drink in your lecture - because you’re not in high school anymore, nobody really cares if you’re eating or drinking in lecture (as long as you’re not loud or disrespectful obviously). Always bring water and drink whenever you start feeling sleepy. I find that the freshness wakes me up! If you’re one of those people who don’t like water, prepare natural juices or teas, they work just as well, if not better!
i hope these tips helped and you figure this out!♡
take it day by day, slow improvement. you got this! ♡
